Summer Vacation?
Over the past few weeks, I have heard many comments from students that sound something like “I’m so over this semester and I can’t wait for the summer break.” We can all agree that there is A LOT going on in the month of May. When you have more than one child in your care, it can feel impossible to get through everything.
What about this mirage-like pinnacle of joy called summer vacation? Children often view this time with unbridled excitement. They imagine how much time they can spend sleeping, hanging out with friends, playing video games, and essentially feeling completely unburdened by responsibilities.
But what about you? For most parents, summer vacation brings up a whole different level of child care needs and other challenges. Are you going to try and take the family somewhere fun? Should the kids stay home all day sleeping until noon (or after?). What about summer programs and camps? You, the parent, are now facing these difficult questions and you are probably not feeling the same level of excitement as your kids.
You are in survival mode right now and that means that you will benefit from taking each day as it comes. Use a family calendar to plan your obligations so that everyone knows what is happening. Depending on your situation, you may need to divide and conquer when it comes to attending school events. Use a fair lottery-style system to decide who goes to which event and enlist extended family members to help with this.
You are one person and you cannot be everywhere! Ask family members to write down their expectations about the summer months so that you can gather to discuss realistic options. Let the kids do some research about different options to that they are participating in evaluating the cost and time involved in these activities. Being a good parent means that sometimes your kids are not happy with your decisions – and that’s okay!
