Chromebook Management Tips

We have Chromebooks! Now what?
Having chromebooks in your classroom really changes the environment. Or does it... ? Teachers often ask me for tips on how to manage chromebooks in the classroom. The best suggestion that I can give them is to MANAGE STUDENTS, NOT DEVICES. Your role as the teacher is to create relationships with students so you can support them through the healthy challenges you design for them on a daily basis. Having technology in the classroom doesn't change this. Just because there is technology in the classroom doesn't mean that students will be more off task than they used to be. They may be off task in new ways that are more visible, but I guarantee that without the technology they would still be finding other ways to be off task. A pencil and paper can be used for off task behavior just as well as any computer. Remember when you were in 6th grade? I guarantee that you didn't need any technology to get distracted.
Having ubiquitous tech in your class makes distraction look a lot different. Yet the ways in which teachers manage tech enhanced classrooms might seem very familiar to you. Here is a list of suggestions from teachers with 1:1 chromebooks for how to manage your Chromebook (or even iPad) classroom.
- Set high expectations for technology use.
- Be consistent in your follow through for these expectations when they are broken.
- Be specific about what students are supposed to be doing with the technology and what to do when they are done with it.
- Establish control phrases for lids up, lids down, half-mast, hands off keyboards etc. to make transitions quick and easy. Take time to teach and practice these commands.
- Use non-verbal methods to indicate expectations for technology use (red, yellow, green color system, or display pictures to indicate what students are supposed to do with tech. upon entering your classroom.
- Get mobile and move around the room. Proximity enhances accountability and screen visibility.
- Station yourself behind students or adjust seating arrangement to make screens more visible. The from of the room is not a good vantage point to keep an eye on student screen use.

*Last year, LO sent 2 teachers from each school but with funding changes this year teachers are encouraged to use their own PD funds to attend. Talk with your administrators if you are interested. In my opinion this is still one of the best values for PD funds in the PDX area.
