Message from Mr. Souza
Dear MHS Families,
We have a few important reminders for you this week:
Today is the last day to register for the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). The test will be given on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 at Mundelein High School. This exam is optional, open to Grade 11 students only, and is being offered free of charge. This exam is the qualifying exam for the National Merit Scholarship. This is a great opportunity for you to possibly obtain National Merit recognition and scholarship money. Next week I will have the honor of announcing the 2025 semifinalist from MHS. Next year, it could be you! Click here to register using your MHS email.
On Monday, students will be surveyed regarding the supports they know are available to them at school, their need for mental health supports, and social emotional interventions students may want to participate in, as well as their “sense of belonging” at school. The survey is attached here for your convenience. The survey is optional. If you prefer your student not participate, please tell them they may opt out.
September 11th is school picture day! Students will have an opportunity to have their picture taken during all gym and band periods. If you do not have a gym or band class, Mrs. Lendino will send a pass for you.
Seniors, after you have your picture taken, please head over to the Herff Jones table to get measured for your cap and gown and pick up information about how to place your order.
Thursday evening, September 12th, we are excited to host our 1st Universidad de Padres meeting of the year. For more information, please reach out to Fred Kliora at 847-949-2200 Ext. 1410 or Joanna Rodriguez at 847-949-2200 Ext. 1260.

Shout Outs!
Students Learn Business and Soft Skills
Students in FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) are learning the ropes of how to manage and run a real retail business and they don’t have to go far. The Mustang Nation Spirit Store is a Student-Led and School-Based Enterprise located at MHS that started back in 2003, and it follows a current work-based learning model in the Career and Technical Education field.
Students learn a variety of skills related to running a business, such as pricing, revenue, product design, marketing, and scheduling. Students learn a point of sale system that most businesses use. They also learn soft skills such as organizational, technical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Store manager Alan Fisher and apprentices Owen Beake and Kaiden Boongaling count down the drawer every day to make sure funds and transactions were handled correctly and then deposit the funds. Making sure the store is open in the morning, lunches, and after school is also a responsibility of the students.
Upon its inception, the store was created to allow for about 5 hours of time a day for students, staff, and community members to access spirit wear. In 2010, an online store was created that allows for customization of spirit wear, 24/7 access, and greater variety of clothing styles. In 2017, student Colin Geary re-designed the store to upgrade its appearance.
“The store is as real as it gets,” said FBLA Adviser Chris Hoster. “It is fun to see students staff the store and make decisions. Some students consider it their first job and an introductory experience in the world of work.”
Students interested in joining the spirit store team can email fbla@d120.org

September 6th - PSAT/NMSQT Registration Due
MHS is offering the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 at Mundelein High School. This exam is optional, open to Grade 11 students only, and is being offered free of charge. This exam is the qualifying exam for the National Merit Scholarship.
The PSAT/NMSQT will be approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes long. Students will be excused from class for the periods they are testing but will be responsible for making up the classwork they missed.
The PSAT/NMSQT is a multiple-choice assessment of verbal, mathematics and writing skills. There are several benefits to taking this exam. First, top performing grade 11 students may be eligible for money through National Merit, National Achievement, or National Hispanic Scholarship funds. September 15 - October 15 - Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated each year from September 15 to October 15. It began as a week-long celebration in 1968 under President Johnson and was expanded to a month by President Reagan 20 years later in 1988. The month-long celebration provides more time to properly recognize the significant contributions Hispanic/Latino Americans have made in the United States.
Latinas and Latinos have always held significant roles throughout our country’s history, dating all the way back to the American Revolution. Hispanic Heritage Month is important because it provides an opportunity to celebrate the integral part the Hispanic/Latino community has had in growing and strengthening our democracy.
The Hispanic Reading Room at the Library of Congress welcomes you to Interconnecting Worlds: Weaving Community Narratives, Andean Histories & the Library's Collections. In this guide, with resources in English, Spanish and Quechua, we seek to facilitate research about Andean peoples, cultures, and knowledges through the themes of language, storytelling and literature, visual arts, and music. Experiential Education
Experiential Education describes all opportunities offered to students to give them a chance to explore the world of careers and professions. These include classes like Dual Credit Student Internship, Business INCubator, and Geometry in Construction as well as career treks and featured guest speakers.
Internship Student Profile: Mira Myrie, future graphic artist
When I met internship student Mira Myrie at the start of the school year, I knew right away that graphic design was her jam. She was decked out with friendship bracelets and all sorts of jewelry, and, when I asked her if she had any samples of her work, she opened up her phone to show me images of t-shirt designs and logos she’d created. She was beaming while describing them to me.
I placed Mira at two sites. Her first placement would be with Jess Stoffel, owner and designer at Mundelein-based Epic Media Inc., where she specializes in social media, website design, brand management, and content marketing. I knew Jess from her coaching sessions with our Honors Business INCubator class, and she agreed to serving as on of Mira’s mentors right away.
Her second placement was at Signs Now, also a Mundelein business, where her mentors are Randy Rice, Greg Kelsey, and Anthony Pickett. Mira’s placements give her a chance to see both the creative and productions sides of graphic design.
As you can see from the photos below, the experience is one that everyone is enjoying. “I like the freedom this experience is giving me,” stated Mira about her time working with her mentors. “I get to talk through my ideas and get guidance on my creative process,” she added.”
Every Tuesday, Jess meets with Mira up in our school’s Media Center where they collaborate on projects. “I like teaching, and I like to learn,” Stoffel commented. “Working with someone who is new to the field gives me a chance approach my work from a new, fresh perspective”.
On Wednesdays and Thursdays, Mira learns from the graphic design pros at Signs Now. “I’m surprised at just how much this place produces work for the school,” Mira commented. “The make signs for athletics, student groups, and so much more--I’m really impressed,” she added.
One of Mira’s mentors, Anthony, also commented on the refreshing perspective a graphic design novice brings to the workspace. “It’s fun to see how they view our projects,” he shared.
Take a look at the photos below for a glimpse into Mira’s internship experience!
