Goffs Academy Newsletter
October 2017 - Designed by Digital Leaders
A message from the Associate Principal
Mr Ben Pearce, Associate Principal
Welcome to our first half term newsletter. As you will see from the articles below, it has been a very busy start to the academic year, with lots of fantastic achievements and events already. Our 240 new Year 7s have settled in very well, and now just about know their way around the building! Our Year 11, 12 and 13s have also started off on the 'right foot', with many already staying late to revision sessions or just revising independently in our restaurant area after school.
I would like to take this opportunity to say 'farewell' and 'thank you' to Aziz Rahman, who has worked at Goffs for a number of years as a much respected and appreciated youth worker - he is moving on to a similar position much closer to home. In addition, I have been made aware of a fantastic student achievement a couple of weeks ago: Daniella Arcadipane, Year 12, completed a 45 mile 'Palace2Palace' bike ride to raise money for the Prince's Trust. This charity supports vulnerable young people in various ways and so is a really worthy cause. I understand that Daniella managed to raise £155, which is a really phenomenal achievement!
I am pleased to inform you that we have invested £15,000 in new furnishings and shelving for our LRC (library) area which will be installed over the half term break, meaning that it will be a really great area for students to study and research independently. Finally, if you have been past the front of the school recently, you will see that the external works are coming on really well and should be completed over the half term holiday, which will finally bring an end to the New Build works and mean that the school is fully finished - further details are below.
I hope that you all have an excellent half-term break.
New Build
Mr Ian Denchfield, Vice Principal
Much to the relief of staff, we have this week finally taken occupation of the new staff car park at the front of the school. This will enable the contractors to complete the remaining ground works to restore the field to its original condition (removing the contractors’ road and the temporary car park etc.). The remaining ground works are due to be completed over the half term break at which point the contractors will finally depart, leaving us with a fantastic outside space. To enable newly seeded areas of grass and landscaping to bed down some areas of the field will be cordoned off for some time to come, but this will not affect the functioning of the school.
As a reminder, access to school in the mornings and after school will return to the pre-construction position. The forecourt will be closed from 7:50 – 8:30am and again from 2:50 – 3:20pm. During the school day, visitors to the school will be able to use the parking on the forecourt. The new car park is for staff use only and will have controlled barrier access.
If you have any queries regarding the new build or vehicular access arrangements please do not hesitate to contact the school office.
The Great Geography Bake Off
On Tuesday 17th October, the Geography Department held ‘The Great Geography Bake Off’ house competition open to students in all year groups. This is the second year that the Department have run the competition and there were an amazing total of 18 entries from Years 7-10 who thought of a ‘geographical’ cake idea to bake. This year there were several categories open: taste, originality, uniqueness, physical and human geography features and professionalism. The standard of the cakes made was incredible. Well done to all of the students who took part in ‘The Great Geography Bake Off’.
Please see below for a table of all winners in each category. All first, second and third places for each category were awarded a certificate, 1000 house points and a chocolate prize. Thank you also to all of the parents who supported the students during this competition. We look forward to running the ‘The Great Geography Bake Off’ again next year.

Learn 2 Live
Learn 2 Live is an auditorium-based, hard-hitting 90 minute talk that takes students through the consequences of their actions out and about on the road as both a driver and a passenger. A series of speakers talk about their experiences on the roads of Hertfordshire. The speakers include someone from each of the emergency services, a representative from Trading Standards and a victim and/or a family member of someone involved in a road traffic collision, which has been life-changing.
On 27th September students from Year 12 travelled to Hertford Theatre to learn about the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Students were shown fragments of a scenario throughout the event, showing the lead up to a car accident.
One man told the story of a family losing their daughter due to a car mounting the pavement and sadly killing her. The man shared details from the paramedics and the police officers attending the scene that night. At the end, the man revealed that he was the father of this young girl.
"The trip was intense but necessary, it helped me to realise just how serious the consequences of dangerous driving can be"
"While it was a lot to take in, the trip itself was extremely thought-provoking and fully displayed the necessity of road safety"
The trip was a very emotional event for everyone and it showed the possible consequences of dangerous driving. If any students would like to talk through the subject matter further, please see Ms Wilson or Ms Hardwick.
For further advice or information please see the Hertfordshire County Council website here.

Football Success for Goffs
Mr Richard Ashdown, Head of P.E
The Yr 9 football team played their first competitive National Cup football game of the year away in Regents Park against Maria Fidelis School. It was a long journey but the boys were enthusiastic and ready to embark on their opening seasons game. After a rousing team talk from Mr Ashdown it was Maria Fidelis who kicked off, passing the ball back to their centre back, who played it square to his defensive partner and forward to start their first attack on the Goffs defence. However, this pass was intercepted and laid through to Henry Creer who duly dispatched to put Goffs 1-0 up within 10 seconds, it was going to be a long game for Maria Fidelis!!! The scoring continued and a confident Goffs played some excellent football leading at half time 5-0. Despite plenty of substitutions to ensure all boys played a fair amount of time due to the long journey, the scoring didn't let up and a final score of 13-0 was in no way flattering or deceiving, Goffs beat them 'fair and square', playing some very good football but remaining professional throughout. Goals came from Freddie Hill, Jaheim Kehinde, Henri Jackson, Stef Georgiou, Henry Paris Higgins (X3), Fabio Verciglio (X2), Henry Creer (X2), Stathi Theocharous and an own goal. The Yr 9's travel to Stratford to play Chobham Academy on Wednesday 11th October for the next round.
The Yr 10 football team have had two games in the National Cup so far, both being home fixtures and both ending in victory for Goffs despite two very different types of games. Our first encounter was against Queens School, a school well known for its footballing exploits. Goffs started the game well with some intricate passing from the central midfield of Vinnie Gidden and Sonny Chalkley and the dynamic Jack Standing. However, it was Queens who struck first with a well taken finish and they looked in the ascendancy. Goffs rallied back and forced a corner which caused havoc in the Queens box allowing Sonny to sweep home. Into the second half and Queens kept pushing with their tricky number 10 and was brought down in the box by the impressive James Green who made a valiant attempt to nullify the danger. Up stepped their number 10, looking calm and collected, to try and dispatch the penalty. Kai Edwards, who had started the second half in goal from Aston Bush, then started the mind games. taking off his gloves to stretch, do his shoe laces, read a book and anything else he could to make their number 10 that little bit more nervous. It worked a treat as the penalty was hit straight down the middle and cleared. It was then all Goffs who managed to go 2-1 with another for Chalkley and the game was put to bed by Jack Standing with a rasping half volley. James Green won man of the match for a disciplined and rugged display.
Their next round tie was against St Bonaventures and this game would require a much more disciplined display from the whole team. Their quick and strong approach was vastly different from the short, quick passes that Goffs use. In a game of few chances, it was St Bonaventures who went ahead when their rapid number 10 managed to round Kai Edwards to square a goal. Goffs seemed to grow in stature and were now winning challenges with their man like counter-parts rather than being concerned a challenge might ruin their boyish good looks. It was this bullish attitude that allowed Vinnie Gidden to win the ball back and play in sub Morgan Williams to equalise for Goffs, sending the crowd into bedlam. A disallowed goal for St Bonaventures was the only real notable incident for the rest of the game and so the tie went into extra time and then the dreaded penalties. Aston Bush had played well in goal but it was Kai Edwards who went in for the penalty shoot out after his excellent last penalty save. The five Goffs students who would take a penalty were ready. All three of Zain Moutawafiq, Harrison Featley and Freddie Brown converted there's well and Kai again showed his excellent form by saving two, leaving Morgan Williams to bury his high into the net to win it for Goffs. Harvey Marks showed what true sportsmanship is as rather than running off to celebrate with his peers, he went over and in a Freddie Flintoff/Brett Lee moment consoled the opposition players. We await the draw for the next round on Monday 16th October.
National Poetry Day
Miss Sophie Everist
Whole-School Literacy Coordinator
On the 28th September across the English department, we took part in National Poetry Day to celebrate the art and beauty of poetry. Across the day, students listened to and read a range of poetry and had a go at writing some inspirational poems of their own! Here are 8E Rowling showing off what they achieved in their poetry lesson.
EUROPEAN WEEK OF LANGUAGES (25th- 29th September)
Ms Natasha Andreou, Head of Modern Foreign Languages
European week of languages is a world-wide event which is observed every year to celebrate the diversity of languages and cultures that exist. This year, students took part in activities to celebrate the multicultural and diverse community that we have at Goffs:
- Every day, assemblies were presented to whole year groups by three of our most able Year 9 language students, Kara Harvey Hill, Edward Page and Anastasia Holland, on the awareness of diverse language and culture
- Students also took part in their very own Goffs Olympics in which the different houses represented different countries from around the world. On a daily basis they took part in sporting events such as running, basketball and football: “I particularly enjoyed the sports”, “I made lots of new friends”.
- A special menu was put in place in the canteen consisting of a variety of European foods: “it was really nice to eat delicious foods”.
- There were a number of competitions which consisted of:
-Design a flag for the school which represents the multicultural community. There were two joint winners of the flag competition as the standard was so high. They were: Anastasia Efthimiou, 8T and Clyde Del Rosario, 8E. They are pictured below with their designs
Well done to all students for their participation and engagement in celebrating our diverse multicultural community. One student said, “I hope we do the same again next year”.
Curriculum Enrichment Day/Equality and Diversity
On Wednesday 11th October 2017 the school were involved in another brilliant Curriculum Enrichment Day. Year 12 brushed up on their team building skills with the help of WiseUp Team Building, overcoming physical challenges and puzzles that required everyone to get stuck in and involved. Challenges involved moving an ‘explosive device’, using only ropes, to a safe place, and an especially competitive task where teams had to pass a baton over a wide gap; creativity and flexibility was the key to winning!
Lower school were paid a visit by Prison Me No Way, British Transport Police, The Red Cross and National Rail to help develop their citizenship skills and to help students think in a creative and critical way to support them in making the right choices in their future. Students attended a number of workshops such from first aid through to hearing the story of an ex-gangster who served twenty years in prison for his crimes. Students were also able to take part in an interactive session called Street Wise, where they were able to observe how alcohol can turn an innocent evening out into one that could lead to crimes with a life sentence in prison attached.
In addition, we had a number of events linked to promoting equality and diversity within the student body. As part of this students worked on a badge design and pledge. The best examples will be made into badges to be worn by students or printed and displayed in form rooms. Some designs the students came up with are shown below.
Overall, students fed back that they had a fantastic enrichment day, and have come away thinking more carefully about the choices they will make in the future.
The House System
Miss Laura Huseyin, House Lead
What a start to the year for the House team! Already, your House leaders have raised over £1,100 for charity by holding a non-uniform day for the Teenage Cancer Trust in September, collected in over 600 donations for Broxbourne Food Bank, hosted the Year 7 Halloween disco and haunted walk (which was a spooktacular affair!), ran a Halloween pop-up shop and hosted our second annual Spelling Bee, with students across all year groups taking part.
Once everyone has had the chance to recharge their batteries and revise for their mocks over the half term break, the House team are back to business – hosting a plethora of events for the whole school cohort to enjoy. There will be games, competitions and pop-up shops for all to enjoy, as well as Christmas quizzes, non-uniform days and the announcement of our chosen school charities for this year.
