NMSHS PANTHER POST
October 4, 2024
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE - Mr. Goodrich
Nederland Middle-Senior HS Community,
Having watched the devastation from the hurricane in Asheville, NC the past week, it reminded me how vulnerable mountain communities are. It also reminded me that I should let everyone know that BVSD and local emergency services and responders have been working on plans for areas impacted by forest fires and flooding up here in the mountain communities, specifically the areas where schools are involved. In The Spot, a BVSD newsletter, the school district has provided more information for families about the work they have done to be more prepared for local emergencies.
Just so you know, last spring Nederland hosted a meeting of forest service personnel, fire fighters from our area and local law enforcement folks. Collaboratively the school district brought the interested parties together and Boulder Emergency Management facilitated a meeting to address the planning for a mountain fire disaster. The summary of ideas and plans are in the article. If you are interested I would encourage you to go below and find the link to the article.
Upcoming PSAT, October 23
In a few weeks Nederland will be administering the PSAT to all of our 10th and 11th grade students. This assessment is the National Merit Scholarship Program Qualifying Exam. The testing will take place here at school on Wednesday, 10/23 @ 9:30am. The National Merit Scholarship Program is recognized worldwide as a prestigious award. For all 10th and 11th graders, top scores allow examinees to qualify for several corporate scholarship awards. All students can also opt in to the College Board Student Search Service to connect with colleges through the Big Future app. See more information in the PSAT National Merit Student Guide here.
The exam is $18. Parents pay on Revtrak, on the Testing Tile. Deadline for payment is October 23. The PSAT is a great practice opportunity for our students and supports their ability to meet graduation requirements and to be prepared for the important spring administration of the PSAT 10 and SAT assessments. If you have any questions, please contact Jill Pries
Enjoy the beauty of the mountains this weekend,
Gavan

AP EXAMS. Exam registration payments due by October 31.
Register for your high school exams now, using the exam sign up sheet 2024/25 AP Exam Payment form OR pay online: https://bvsd.revtrak.net/high-schools/neh/ select the “testing” app tile. Why take an AP Exam? Entering college with credit you’ve already earned through AP can save you time and money—for example, you might be able to skip introductory courses or even graduate early. Check the AP Exam Credit Search.
College Board reports that no matter their score, students who complete an AP® course and exam benefit from their AP experience. In fact, even students who score a 1 or 2 on an AP Exam are more likely to attend college and graduate on time (than academically similar students who don’t take AP). In a recent survey of nearly 2,000 first-year college students, over 90% of respondents who earned an AP Exam score of 2 said they’re doing well (or very well) in college courses that cover similar content.

Book Fair Coming to NMSHS!
Dear Parents,
I hope this letter finds you well! I am excited to share that Nederland Middle/High school will be hosting its first EVER Book Fair from October 15th through October 18th! The Book Fair will be open throughout the week, and especially during Parent-Teacher Conferences, making it a perfect time for you to visit and support our school!
As many of you know, our library is in need of some serious attention. Without a librarian and with very few resources, it is essential that we work together to bring more books and opportunities to our students. The Book Fair is a fantastic chance to help us fill those empty shelves, all while encouraging a love of reading among our kids.
In addition to the Book Fair, we are holding a Penny War throughout the week! This is a friendly competition for the Middle level grades, (but 9th-12th can help sway the results!) Each class, 6th-8th, will be competing to raise money to help fund the library, and we need your help to win. Here’s how it works: students are encouraged to bring in their pennies to help their class earn points. But there’s a twist – silver coins (nickels, dimes, quarters) will count against other classes, so be sure to save those too! The winning class gets an ice cream party!
Every penny and every purchase will go a long way toward helping us build a library that our students deserve.
If you are able to donate any of your time, we could use the help! Please go to Help at schools and sign up.
We look forward to seeing you at the Book Fair, and thank you for your ongoing support!
Sincerely,
Kameron Troy
PTA Treasurer

Lifetouch School Picture Retake Day - October 7
Emergency Preparedness at NMSHS and BVSD
Last spring, ahead of the summer/fall wildfire season, BVSD Safety, Security and Emergency Management and the Boulder Office of Disaster Management (ODM) co-hosted a half-day tabletop exercise at Nederland Middle/Senior High School. The discussion-based exercise simulated a wildfire emergency in the Boulder County foothills, impacting BVSD schools. Participants included representatives from the mountain schools and fire protection districts, Boulder County Sheriff, and 911 Communications Center, as well as district staff from Transportation, Facilities and others who are responsible for supporting schools during a crisis.
This tabletop exercise provided a platform for BVSD and our partners to come together, test our response protocols and preparedness capabilities, evaluate our safety procedures, share expertise, clarify roles and responsibilities, refine effective communication channels and identify areas for improvement.
Volunteer Background Checks
We would love to have a robust list of volunteers already pre approved through the background check process. You might work in the library, in classrooms, or on field trips. There are 2 different levels of volunteer background checks. We encourage you to go through the fingerprint process. It's a little more expensive, but lasts for 5 years instead of 1 year. Either method is acceptable though.
Raptor Check good for 1 year: Volunteers and field trip chaperones should be under line-of-sight supervision by BVSD staff at all times. Line-of-sight can be through a transparent wall or door. Individuals interested in volunteering and interacting with students under line of sight supervision of BVSD staff:
Online Raptor Application - $32 background check, renew every year
Volunteer Agreement - School to keep on file, renew every year.
Fingerprint check good for 5 years: For volunteers, partners, or field trip chaperones who will not be under line-of-sight supervision of BVSD staff at all times:
Instructions. Allow 2 weeks for the approval process.
Please fill out this form to get started.
A CBI fingerprint check is required through a third party vendor (these background checks are now valid for 5 years), paid by the volunteer or partner AND
volunteer must sign a BVSD volunteer agreement (Spanish) each year and email the volunteer agreement to berenice.ramirez@bvsd.org
Please see the Volunteers/Visitors Flowchart and the Volunteer/Visitor FAQ for additional details.
