Hillsdale Elementary School, May 2025, v2
May 16, 2025
It has been a wonderful year full of so much learning and growth! We have a lot of Thank You-s in this newsletter! We are so excited to celebrate our students in a variety of ways over the next few weeks.
Please be reminded that there is NO SCHOOL on TUESDAY 5/20!
Thank you to all the parents and PTO that sent in nice thoughts and gifts for teacher appreciation week. The teachers loved the show of support with the gift raffle and Coffee and Snack Bar on Tuesday. The best thing you can do to support your teacher is to let them know the positive impact they have had on your child this year!
Concert Season
Special thanks to Mrs. Van Lenten, Mr. Pursell, and Mr. Giovan for all their hard work with our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders preparing for our Spring Concerts. They all sounded wonderful! I am always so impressed with how much our students learn in a year!
4th and 5th Track Meet
Thank you to all the volunteers! This event is an enormous undertaking! It is a wonderful culminating PE event for our 4th and 5th graders. They had a great day showing all they have learned about Track and Field.
Hauling for Hillsdale
Be sure to check out the fun TONIGHT! There is a 5K run, ice cream, music and a dunk tank!
Library Update
The last day students may check books out of the library this school year is Friday, May 23rd, so that we can do inventory. Volunteers are welcome to help with inventory! It is very easy! Interested volunteers may sign up using the link below. Thank you!
Lost and Found
All items left in the Lost and Found will be donated Friday May 23rd. Please remind your child to look for their lost things!
Remember, there is NO SCHOOL Tuesday May 20th and Monday, May 26th
Please see flyers below.
Nurse Notes
Now that we are into the spring season, it is allergy season, but there are many other illnesses circulating. Please keep you child(ren) home and treat their symptoms.
Students should remain home until symptoms have significantly improved (especially a cough) and after they have been fever free for 24 hours without the benefit of fever reducing medication. Please update pick up patrol when your child(ren) is absent. Send a note in to Mrs. Fithian for any days they are absent.
PA State Mandated Medical and Dental information for 25-26 school year:

Absences related to not meeting state mandated health requirements are considered unlawful.
If you have questions about these requirements, please contact Mrs. Champi at echampi@wcasd.net
This information is important, especially for kindergarten and all newly registered students. Please send all required information to Mrs. Champi.
Reading Olympics is Coming to Hillsdale!
We’re excited to announce that Hillsdale will be participating in Reading Olympics for the first time next school year—just for 4th and 5th graders! This fun and engaging program, run by Ms. Szczesny, our school librarian, encourages teamwork and a love of reading as students work together to read from a list of selected books. At the end of the year, teams will compete by answering questions about the books in a friendly competition against students from elementary schools all across Chester County!
If your child is interested in participating, please fill out this short interest survey:
Reading Olympics Interest Survey
More details, including book lists and team information, will be shared in the fall!
Library Inventory Volunteers Needed
Help us wrap up the school year by assisting with our library inventory! Volunteers will help scan books, organize shelves, and make sure everything is accounted for. Thank you for supporting our library!

Important Construction Updates
You may have seen the dumpsters and materials being delivered to our parking lot as well as the installation of a new fence around the area where the addition will be constructed over the next year. We are expecting construction of the new stairwell outside rooms 109 and 309 to begin soon.
Additionally, you may notice movement in the fields behind the building as we prepare for the upcoming addition. Trucks, trailers, and equipment will be part of our routine moving forward.
This summer, we are completely renovating the Upper and Lower Pods to include 18 large classrooms, a new Reading suite, and other spaces for support teachers. Our office will be relocated to Glen Acres Elementary School from June 16th until August 16th.
Planning a Vacation?
Please note that each child is permitted 5 Family Vacation Days each school year.
