March 2025 News From The Elementary Office
A MESSAGE FROM THE ELEMENTARY OFFICE
Dear Families,
As we welcome the arrival of spring, I want to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude for your continued support. Your generosity and involvement in our recent fundraiser have made a meaningful impact on our school community, and we couldn’t have done it without you!
With just a few weeks left before spring break, we encourage you to help your child stay focused on their learning. Consistent routines, reading together, and supporting homework can make a big difference in maintaining momentum as we move through this important stretch of the school year.
We also want to wish you and your family a restful and enjoyable spring break. Whether you’re traveling or spending time at home, we hope it brings relaxation and time to recharge. We look forward to welcoming everyone back, ready for a strong finish to the school year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. McCullough
Elementary Principal

IREAD Grade 2 and 3 Testing Information
What are the next steps for a grade two student who does not pass IREAD?
Grade two students in public, charter, and state-accredited, non-public schools who do not pass during the spring or summer IREAD administrations must receive appropriate support and remediation prior to
retesting in the spring of grade three. Beginning in summer 2025, summer school must be offered for students in grade two who score “At Risk.” Any student in grade two who did not pass IREAD may also participate in the IREAD Summer Retest.
What are the next steps for a grade three student who does not pass IREAD?
Grade three students in public, charter, and state-accredited, non-public schools who do not pass during the spring or summer IREAD administrations must receive appropriate support and remediation prior to retesting as a retained third-grade student.
Beginning in summer 2025, summer school must be offered for students in grade three who score “Did Not Pass.” More information canbe found here.
A student who is not subject to the retention requirement based on their eligibility for the new Good Cause Exemption (GCE) must be provided additional reading instruction aligned with science of reading practices ntil they achieve a passing score on the IREAD assessment. Refer to this guidance for more information.
Do students who receive GCEs still participate in the IREAD Summer Retest?
Yes, students will participate in IREAD spring and summer administrations until they pass or are promoted to grade seven. This requirement begins with students who receive GCEs after the 2025 IREAD Summer Retest.
What happens if a grade three student does not attend summer school offerings or participate in the IREAD Summer Retest?
Schools should document communication attempts with families outlining IREAD testing requirements, supports, and timelines. Students who do not pass IREAD and are not eligible for a new GCE must be retained in grade three under Indiana law.

SCIENCE OF READING and VOCABULARY
Vocabulary plays a key role in the reading process and is critical to reading comprehension. Children learn the meanings of most words indirectly, through everyday experiences with oral and written language. Other words are learned through carefully designed instruction.
Vocabulary refers to the words we must understand to communicate effectively. We can identify four types of vocabulary:
- Listening vocabulary: the words we need to know to understand what we hear.
- Speaking vocabulary: the words we use when we speak.
- Reading vocabulary: the words we need to know to understand what we read.
- Writing vocabulary: the words we use in writing.
Beginning readers must use the words they hear orally to make sense of the words they see in print. Kids who hear more words spoken at home learn more words and enter school with better vocabularies. This larger vocabulary pays off exponentially as a child progresses through school.
Consider, for example, what happens when a beginning reader comes to the word dig in a book. As she begins to figure out the sounds represented by the letters d, i, g, the reader recognizes that the sounds make up a very familiar word that she has heard and said many times. It is harder for a beginning reader to figure out words that are not already part of their speaking (oral) vocabulary.
As children learn to read more advanced texts, they must learn the meaning of new words that are not part of their oral vocabulary.
While most vocabulary is learned indirectly, some vocabulary must be taught directly by: (1) providing kids with instruction in specific words that are important to understanding a particular text; and (2) teaching kids more general word-learning strategies that they can apply to a variety of words, such as analyzing parts of words (e.g., root words).
