Message from Administration
Here are a few important points to keep in mind as we enter the new marking period:
Academic Progress: Please be aware that the start of a new marking period offers a fresh opportunity for your child to excel academically. If there have been any concerns or challenges in the previous marking period, now is the time to work on improving them. We encourage you to have open communication with your child about their academic goals and progress. Please sign up for a Parent Focus Account.
Communication: Our lines of communication are always open, and we are here to assist you. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's performance, don't hesitate to reach out to their teachers, counselors, or Ms. Ramos and Mr. Day. We are committed to helping your child succeed.
Homework and Study Habits: It's essential to establish a routine that includes regular homework (reading and math review) and study time. Encourage your child to maintain good study habits and stay organized. Consistent effort in these areas can lead to significant improvements in their academic performance.
Goal Setting: Set clear and achievable goals for the marking period with your child. These goals should be specific and measurable, such as improving grades in specific subjects, completing assignments on time, or participating more actively in class.
Attendance: Regular attendance is crucial for your child's success. Please ensure that your child attends school regularly and arrives on time. If there are any concerns regarding attendance, please let us know so that we can provide appropriate support.
We are excited to work with your child during this new marking period and are confident that with your support, they can achieve their academic goals. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, concerns, or need assistance.Thank you for entrusting us with your child's education, and let's work together to ensure a successful and productive marking period.
Ms. Ramos and Mr. Day
Weather Related Information
Hello Winand Families,
BCPS has already used two out of its three traditional inclement weather days for the 2024-2025 school year. After day three, BCPS will transition to virtual learning for any additional inclement weather days, operating on a 2-hour delay schedule.
If BCPS uses all three traditional inclement weather days and needs to move into virtual learning, classroom teachers at Winand will post virtual learning information on their Schoology pages including daily schedules and Google Meet join codes. This information will also be made available on the Winand website.
During virtual learning, students must log in and participate in instruction to be marked present. Schools will operate on a 2-hour delay schedule (11:10 AM start time) in the event of virtual learning, and all grades will have lunch from 12:45 PM to 1:15 PM.
Students are responsible for the safe handling and use of their devices. Broken and lost devices will incur a replacement fee. Technology support is available to students and families by submitting a support request at https://bcps.cherwellondemand.com/CherwellPortal/BCPSServe?_=290fd8ae#0 or by calling the Help Desk at 443-809-4672.
Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have questions, or feel free to contact Ms. Ramos mramos3@bcps.org or Mr. Day gday3@bcps.org.
Attendance
Regular attendance is closely linked to academic success. Students who attend school regularly are more likely to keep up with their assignments, understand the material, and perform well on assessments. Missing school can lead to gaps in learning and make it challenging for students to grasp essential concepts. A student who missed 10% or more of school is considered chronically absent; this is 2 days a month! Help us to ensure your child attends school each day, we want every child to succeed!
If your child is absent, please send a note to their teacher upon their return to school.
At Winand Elementary, the goal is 95% attendance; please help us achieve this goal and provide students the foundation they deserve.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found is located in the cafeteria; please encourage your child to look in the bin if they lost something. Remaining items will be donated at the end of the week.
BCPS Climate Survey
The annual BCPS Climate Survey will be available from Monday, January 27, through Friday, February 28 2025.
The survey is for all stakeholders: students in Grades 3–12, parents/caregivers, community members, and all staff and focuses on school climate and engagement.
It takes three minutes or less to complete. Please use the link below or complete the paper copy that was sent home and send it back with your student. They will earn a Tower point!

News from the Reading Specialist
During the months of January and February all students K-5 were screened in reading. Students in Kindergarten were screened with DIBELS 8th Edition, grade 1 Amira Benchmark Assessment and grades 2-5 Amira and MAP. Please look for the parent report that will share your child’s scores in the area of reading. Attached to the parent report will be an explanation of DIBELS or AMIRA screeners. If you have further questions, please email me.
So, all this might get you thinking about how I can help my child at home with reading. Possibly you heard the new buzz about the “science of reading” or maybe not. Either way we want you to SAVE the DATE of March 18th for Reading Night. At Reading Night you will play fun reading games, hear about the science of reading, take home prizes, and get this dinner is included. Wait there is more. During the evening will also have the Scholastic Bookfair open and available for purchase as well as many other exciting venders and activities. Nurse's Corner
Greetings From Nurse P.!
Dear Parents and Guardians:
Smile! February is National Children's Dental Health Month (NCDHM) - a great time to promote the benefits of good oral hygiene. Developing good dental health habits (including regular dental visits) helps children get a jump start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.
Visit the American Dental Association's 2025 NCDHM Campaign website to download posters and activity sheets for kids (like a coloring sheet and a maze), many of which are available in Spanish.
The National Institutes of Health provides free publications including material on baby teeth, tooth decay, and finding low-cost dental care. National Children’s Dental Health Month Activities:
Spread the word
The ADA and Crest + Oral B provide a comprehensive list of ways to publicize National Children's Dental Health Month.
Work on arts and crafts projects with the kids
The ADA website (ada.org) has lots of fun things to do regarding National Children's Dental Health Month. You can even download puzzles and coloring pages for the kids directly from the site.
Brush and floss together
Make brushing and flossing a regular part of daily activities with your children. After all, kids learn best when they have an adult to show them the right way.
