High School Weekly Update
9/27/24
Counselor's Corner
Greetings Gray Stone Families!
I hope that everyone is safe and mostly unaffected by the storm. My thoughts today have been with all of you.
We are only a couple of weeks away from the end of the 1st quarter of the school year and that means report cards will soon be posted to Infinite Campus. For this week’s Counselor’s Corner, I would like to share thoughts about grades, especially if they are not what you would like them to be.
1. All parents/guardians are encouraged to be parent observers of their student(s) on Canvas. If you are not already connected, you can find instructions to do so at this link. Parent Observers can see such things as up-to-date grades, upcoming assignments, missing assignments, teacher comments, and more. This is essential for monitoring student progress.
2. Communicate with teachers. If your student is struggling or even failing a course, teachers will alert you through email. Please make a point to reply to these messages if you receive them. Open communication is important for struggling students and ensures everyone is on the same page.
3. When you check grades, look for trends. At this point in the school year, you should be able to see if your student is doing what is necessary for success. Assignments should be consistently turned in on time and completed. When a student is struggling, these are the first things I look for and the first steps that should be corrected.
4. Make use of Knight Time to meet with teachers for one-on-one assistance. You may not know this but parents and teachers can require struggling students to attend this time if they are not passing a course. While this is an option, we prefer that students take the initiative themselves to work for success.
Student success at Gray Stone is a combination of 3 sources - the student, the parent(s), and the teacher(s). Of these 3, the most significant of these is the student. A student who is determined to succeed cannot be stopped.
Conversely, a student who is determined to fail also cannot be stopped. We should all do our part to help them succeed. If you need assistance with any of these tips, please contact me. I am here to help your student(s) be the best they can be.
Until next time…
You Matter!

Two Gray Stone Students Recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program
Gray Stone Day School seniors Maxwell Foote and Hudson Sharp have been named Commended Students in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2025 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2025 competition by taking the 2023 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
“Hudson and Max truly embody the high academic standards we hold at Gray Stone and have
demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success. We know they both have incredibly
bright futures ahead and we proudly celebrate this achievement with them,” said Principal Jeff
Walter.
