Program Description:
Long a nation of emigrants, Spain has become a migrant-receiving country in the twenty-first century. Between 1998 and 2022, its population increased from 40 million to 47.5 million due, in great part, to international migration. The majority of migrants hail from Latin America. Who are the Latin Americans who migrate to Spain and why do they do so? How are they received by their host country? What, if anything, do they have in common with Latin American migrants and their Latinx progeny in the United States? This course addresses these questions by examining Spain’s legacy as an imperial power in the Americas and how Latin Americans are transforming Spanish society and culture. Discover more here.

Other Events and Opportunities
Co-sponsored by LALS and Led by LALS-Affiliated Faculty
Join us for a discussion of Mike Wilson’s book What Side Are You On? with Professor Felicity Amaya Schaeffer on Wednesday, December 4th, from 4:00-6:00pm at Merrill Provost’s House, Public Living Room. Light refreshments will be provided.
Mike Wilson is a dedicated humanitarian and co-author of What Side Are You On? with Dr. Jose Antonio Lucero. His work addresses the intersections of poverty, racism, and colonialism, with a focus on migrant rights and humanitarian aid along the border. Known for establishing water stations for migrants on tribal lands, Mike’s advocacy often places him at odds with both the U.S. government and his own Indigenous community. His recent book offers a profound examination of these critical issues.
Felicity Amaya Schaeffer is Professor of the Feminist Studies Department and the Critical Race and Ethnic Studies Department, as well as an Affiliate Faculty in Latin American and Latinx Studies at UC Santa Cruz.
Dec 4th at 5:30pm - Digital Arts Research Center
UCSC Special Collections has invited Los Angeles-based, queer-identified Chicanx artist Israel Campos, to speak about his work at the DARC auditorium, Wednesday Dec. 4th at 5:30.
Everyone is welcome to attend this free event.
After receiving his BA at UCSC, Campos received his MFA from U of W, Madison in printmaking. He makes artist books as well as installations and paintings. A few years ago he worked directly with UCSC Special Collections' facsimiles to develop book projects modeled on Aztec codices. Among other topics, we will discuss the process of repurposing historical design elements in his contemporary works, which touch on queer Chicanx representation, U.S./Mexico colonial histories, as well as contemporary climate change.
Paid position working with economic justice nonprofit! Due December 4th
Here's the link to apply.
You'll need a résumé and a 500-word personal statement. Consider using Career Success resources, including drop-in peer coaching, if you need help getting this done!

Self Care and Campus Support
Do you know about SHOP wellness coaching? They can help with all kinds of issues, including: time management, roommate/housing issues, partying safer, and many other topics (see flyer for more ideas). Getting help with external stress can make a difference in your ability to focus on academics!
Tutoring is Available for 120+ Classes this Fall quarter!
Interested in tutoring but the class is not supported?
We have other programs to support students - read more about them below:
Serves students with math questions in the following subjects, algebra, trigonometry, calculus, and vector calculus. (The tutors are math majors and may have the capacity to tutor higher levels of math)
Students are encouraged to work with other students who may be in the same class or can work individually. The tutor roams the room checking in on students individually and providing support.
Serves students with any writing work (assignment or personal) they encounter.
Students will have access to 30-minute meetings with a writing tutor who is trained to help students become better writers, not edit.
45-minute workshops that teach students the tools to be successful at UCSC. The topics in the workshop are science-backed best practices for effective, durable learning!
Topics include Study Skills, Goal Setting, Productive Struggle, Note-Taking, Understanding your Syllabus
The coaching program connects interested students with peer coaches. In those private, one-on-one meetings, students can reflect on their experience at UCSC, learn new study strategies, and get connected to resources and opportunities.
