The Royals SH Boys Volleyball Team headed south to Black Diamond last Wednesday, to compete in this year's 2A ASAA Provincial Championships. The tournament consisted of the 12 top 2A teams from across Alberta, and this year’s group went into the competition with the goal of getting into the final 4, for a chance to play for a championship. Thursday, started with a nail biter against the South Central Zone Champions and host, Oilfield’s Drillers. In a hostile and loud environment the boys pulled out the win in the 3rd set 18-16, to get that important first win! The boys then went undefeated the rest of the Round Robin with the results as follows;
vs Lacrete Lancers (25-19, 25-13)
vs Lethbridge Immanuel Christian Eagles (25-15, 25-18)
vs Bonnyville Ecole Notre Dame Wildcats (25-14, 25-15)
vs Calgary Rundle College Cobras (25-20, 25-27, 15-11)
Finishing first in their round robin pool advanced the team to the semi-final where they faced last year’s 2A ASAA Provincial silver medalists Edmonton Christian Eagles. The boys were focused and very determined not to lose out on the opportunity to play for a gold medal, and won the match in 2 straight sets 25-18, 25-14 to set up a final match with the top team from the Gold Pool, Kate Andrews Pride.
The final promised to be an exciting one, and it did not disappoint! It was a back and forth battle with the first set going to Kate Andrews 25-23. The Royals stormed back in set two to win 25-15, and a determined group of boys that raised to the challenges of the moment, went on to win OLMP School’s first ever 2A Boys ASAA Provincial Volleyball Championship!! Congrats again to the student athletes, coaches and very supportive parent group!
