A Note from Dr. Martin
Dear LISD Families,
Lately, my heart is extra full of community spirit. The most recent wave of this started on Friday, November 22, when the whole school gathered around screens to watch our boys soccer team in the state play-offs. The very next day, some folks planned a watch party at the Islander to cheer on the lobos from afar for their final game. That weekend, I got to be part of the inaugural show for the Lopez Original Theater, performing to three wonderful local audiences. The following weekend brought the community Thanksgiving potluck at the Lopez Grange, the village lighting ceremony and MPPACT performance, the pre-school bazaar, AND the grand opening of the new skatepark in the village. At each one of these events, I felt the folks present really leaning into that spirit of community, the joy of being together, and a shared focus or purpose.
When I moved to Lopez Island nearly five years ago, I was hoping for this, so I'm always on the lookout for evidence to support my claim that the Lopez Island community rocks. The school is such an important part of this community. We provide reasons for people to come together to support kids, and our students become the beneficiaries of all that collective love. Next week, you'll have an opportunity to experience this through Winter Arts Night on Wednesday, December 11, varsity basketball home games on Thursday, December 12, an MPPACT performance at the Little Winter Market on Saturday morning December 14, and a fun Soup & Board Games night the evening of the 14th. Come on out to support our students and fill your own cup with the joy and magic of community.
All my best,
Martha

Lopez Students in National Newspaper
After the presidential election, Richard Carter challenged his 10th grade English class to write short opinion letters on the outcome. He queried the letters editor from the Washington Post to see if they would be interested in submissions from Lopez students. After getting a resounding YES from the editor, Mr. Carter encouraged his students to submit their writing. Four Lopez student responses were included in the article that the WA Post ran on November 21. The article is behind a paywall on the Washington Post website but a PDF of the article is linked here.
Well done students!

Flashlight Reading Party!
First & Second Grade had a flashlight reading party-- in a fort! So fun!!
Calendula Salve!
Fifth grade made Calendula Salve this week. We had harvested calendula flowers in early October, which we dried and then created a calendula oil with the dried flowers. After a month of sitting in the dark, the oil was ready to process into salve. These young herbalists are now well versed in the uses of calendula and now know how to make their own salves!
Sports Physicals Spots Open in Jan & Feb
The Lopez Clinic has upcoming sports physical and well child appointments available in January and February. If your student plays a spring sport (Track or Golf) this is a great time to get those physicals done.

What clubs/athletics/extracurriculars have you been involved in?
I’ve done yearbook for two years, basketball for seven years, and golf for three years (counting this year).
What is one positive memory from your time here that you’ll carry with you forever?
I really enjoyed Mr. Carter’s drama class in middle school. I felt very welcomed and I could work out a lot of emotions through acting.
What is the best piece of advice you have received from a teacher?
Mr. Carter always says, “just keep breathing.” I was good at monologues but terrible at public speaking or giving reports, and he would say, “just keep breathing.”
Finish this sentence: “I cannot live without…….”
Laughter.
What is one piece of advice you have for incoming high school students?
Don’t procrastinate. It feels like the best decision at the time, but it’s not going to help your future.
What is the most meaningful assignment ever given to you by a teacher?
We did a portrait of an elder in 9th grade English with Mr. Tetu. I interviewed my grandpa and I learned so much more about him than I knew before. He was a hunter in Alaska and I learned a lot of details about that.
What’s the most important quality in a friendship? Why?
Trust and love, because you can use trust to lean on and you know that you won’t be judged.
In 10 years, I will be…
I hope to have my life somewhat together….to have a job, a place to live, and a sense of comfort. I want to be in a stable place with income that I’m not living paycheck to paycheck.
What are your plans after high school?
I want to get a degree in early childhood education. I love working with the younger kids so I want to be a preschool teacher. I’m really lucky because I got to work at the preschool here on Lopez for a summer, and that’s when I knew. I’m actually writing about that experience in my college applications. I’m hoping to go to Western because I’d like to stay close to home.
