Principal's Corner
Dear Woodlawn Academy Community,
In the wake of recent events, our collective spirit has been tested, yet through adversity, the strength and unity of our community have shone. Last week, we faced a heart-wrenching incident that left one of our students critically injured. Today, it brings me satisfaction and relief to share that our student is on the path to a full recovery, embodying the resilience and spirit that define us at Woodlawn.
We have witnessed the best possible outcome in the wake of a terrible event, a testament to the resilience of our children. Every student rallied to send their well wishes to their peer in an incredible display of humanity in response to reckless hate. Such moments of empathy and unity are profound, underlining why I am proud to be an IB educator. This experience reaffirms the core of our teaching philosophy: fostering internationally minded individuals who contribute to building a more peaceful world through recognizing their shared humanity and responsibilities. Witnessing our students embody these values in real time is inspiring and a powerful reminder of the impact of our educational approach.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) philosophy, a guiding light in our journey, aims to develop internationally minded people who recognize their common humanity to create a better and more peaceful world. These moments provide us with a unique opportunity to reflect on the core values that guide us, not just as educators and students, but as custodians of a future we aspire to shape into a place of peace and mutual understanding.
To our students, you have shown remarkable strength and compassion. Your actions are a living testament to the world we strive to create. To our families and staff, your support and understanding during these times have been invaluable. Together, we are not just a school; we are a community united in our search for a better tomorrow.
Thank you for your continued trust and support. Let us continue to nurture our students' humanity, guiding them toward a future where the dream of a more peaceful world is not just an aspiration but a reality.
With optimism,
Luis De La Garza,
Head of School
Woodlawn Academy

8th Grade Community Project- Journey
This past week students continued their "Planning" phase, thinking through the logistics needed to make their action plan a success! They also spent time considering who they might want to be paired up for a supervisor. These requests were taken into consideration and students were matched. They will continue their projects these next 3 weeks by taking action on their plans. Keep an eye out for a lot of exciting drives, events, and opportunities created by our 8th graders!

Puppy Love: Destressing with a Therapy Dog Visit
Our students enjoyed a bit of destressing by loving on two sweet therapy dogs. Mrs. Femath, IB Coordinator, worked with PAWS for Service to bring in therapy dogs to help ease tensions for students and teachers in some STAAR grade levels.
These therapy dogs spread much joy wherever they go, and we are lucky to have them continue to visit Woodlawn on a volunteer basis. We welcomed back Onyx (3rd Grade) and Buddy (5th Grade), and we couldn't get enough!

SA Treble Choir UIL Competition
Woodlawn Eagles shared a historical, special moment together while witnessing the Solar Eclipse of 2024. Students enjoyed moon & sun activities leading up to the big moment! They were able to enjoy the spectacular view (with safety solar glasses) as the moon enclosed on the sun.
Alas, the total eclipse presented itself! The moments of darkness are captured below. What a special treat for our eagle students to experience together!
Fun Fact: The next Total Solar Eclipse to cross North America will be in 2044. That means our kinder students will be 25/26 years old.
