West Point El. Parent Update
Week of August 11, 2024
Dear West Point Families,
Happy first week of school! We are excited to meet all of our families at Back-to-School Night this Tuesday. Here are four important things to know as we get ready for the new school year.
- Back to School Night is Tuesday, August 13 from 5:30-7:00. It will be Open House style.
*Watch for an email on Monday evening from your student's teacher. It will include important information about classroom policies and routines and how to help your child be successful this year.
* Please stop by the PTA table and get a free popsicle for you and your family. If you can help with the PTA table, please sign up for a time slot with the following link: https://m.signupgenius.com/#!/showSignUp/4090F4AA9AF2FABFC1-50641635-ptabooth - School begins this Thursday, August 15. It will be an EARLY OUT Day.
- We are now accepting applications for our 2024-2026 Community Council. Applications can be found below and are due by Friday, August 23. If needed, voting will take place the following Monday - Wednesday. Please see below for additional information.
- Be sure to sign all electronic documents on your myDSD account.
Every day is a great day to be a Wildcat!

Experience the Magic
This year our theme is Experience the Magic. Magic stands for Manners, Attentiveness, Gratitude, Inclusiveness, and Confidence. Each month we will be focusing on one of the attributes. Students will have the opportunity to "letter" each month by completing a task to earn that month's letter for their brag tag ring. We will also be earning bonus letters: W P E. Students will have an opportunity to complete an Excellent Project which we will display during the month of May. Watch for more information once school begins!
Brag Tags
We are asking families to help us with two focus areas this year: attendance and home reading. Both of these areas make a huge impact on student success at school. This year students will have an opportunity to earn an attendance and a reading brag tag each month, starting in September, as well as each month's MAGIC brag tag (above).
Attendance: Students can earn an attendance brag tag if they have 1 or less absences that month.
Reading: Students can earn a reading brag tag if they read at home a minimum of 18 days during the month for at least 20 minutes each day (15 minutes for kindergarten).
M - Manners: Students will complete activities during the month that teach good manners at school.
Teachers will send home a reading calendar for students to fill out each month. We are asking parents to sign the calendar at the end of the month before students return it to school. Thank you for your support!

Community Council
The Community Council is made up of teachers, parents, and administration who meet five times during the year. Serving on the council is a great way to partner with the school as we consider how to best meet the needs of our students. The Community Council also oversees the expenditure of our Trustland funds.
Applications are currently being accepted through August 23 at 4 p.m. The application is attached below, and copies are available in the office. Applications can be submitted via email to mconrad@dsdmail.net or turned in at the main office. With your application, please include a short paragraph introducing yourself and why you would be an asset to the West Point Elementary Community Council. This information will be shared along with the ballot.
Elections will be held Monday, August 26 through Wednesday, August 28 at 4:00 pm via myDSD. The results will be announced in the Weekly Newsletter on September 1. Our first meeting will be Wednesday, September 18 at 5:30 p.m. in our Conference Room.
You can also access the documents below on our Community Council webpage.

Back to School Night
We will be providing every student in the school a free school t-shirt again this year! Teachers will have a sign up sheet in their classrooms at Back to School Night. When you come, be sure to write your child's name and t-shirt size. Our PTA has designed the shirts and will order them for us as soon as we have all the sizes. We want all our students to be able to participate in school spirit day every Friday!
Bell Schedule
The first bell rings at 8:50 a.m., school begins at 8:55 a.m., and school ends at 3:30 p.m. Early out days end at 1:30 p.m.
Outside supervision begins at 8:35 a.m., which is 15 minutes before the first bell. Students should not arrive at school before this time unless they are eating breakfast at school. Breakfast begins at 8:20 a.m. Students who are eating breakfast at school should enter the lunchroom door on the south side of the building.
