Notre Dame Catholic Primary School
Foundations for Life Long Learning 25 JULY
Dear Parents and Staff
I’m not certain of the validity of the comments, above, attributed to Michelangelo and, rather than let the facts get in the way of a good story, I’m happy to accept their intent whatever the level of truth. The sentiments expressed in the reflection are very relevant to our vocation of teaching. A true teacher is constantly looking to find that “Angel” inside each and every child…..and so often we are surprised with what we see once we scratch the surface. Children are amazing with such a diversity of talents, whether they are in the purely academic domain, the arts, physical skills or emotional intelligence. It is one of the great joys of teaching to witness the moment when “the penny drops” for a child and share their excitement as they connect the pieces of the puzzle to gain understanding. Thank you, parents, for allowing us to be participants on this wonderful journey with your children.
As we enter the second semester of the year I look forward to sharing many of these exciting moments when I visit classes or when children come to my office to share their great achievements.
GRANDPARENTS’ DAY
In this busy world that we live in I’m sure many parents wonder how they could manage without the help of their parents. We see so many grandparents at school each day dropping off and collecting children, helping out in the canteen and looking after the school banking. Next Wednesday it is our turn to acknowledge the great part that grandparents play in the children’s lives by celebrating Mass in their honour, having them visit classrooms and then join us for morning tea. I look forward to meeting with many of the grandparents and thanking them for all that they do.
PERFORMING ARTS FESTIVAL
This morning Bro. Stephen and I, along with three of our Student Leaders, attended the Opening Mass for the Performing Arts Festival at St Mary’s Cathedral. This is the 30th anniversary of the Festival and the beautiful Mass was a fitting way to celebrate the beginning of another great month and a half of performances showcasing the many talents of the students within our Catholic Schools in Western Australia. I was very fortunate to have been a member of the organizing committee when the festival commenced all of those years ago and am amazed that it has grown to the point where there will be 25,800 students involved over the next six weeks. Our school has strong representation from our Junior and Senior Dance Groups, our Year Three and School Choirs and a number of individual performers and I hope to be able to attend many of these performances.
DISCO
Our wonderful P&F has organized our school Disco for this Friday evening as a great welcome back to school. Please see their flyer further along in the Newsletter for all of the details.
BOOKWEEK
Our Bookweek dress up day and parade will be on Wednesday 14 August so it’s time to start thinking about your costume. This year’s theme is Reading is my Secret Power which provides plenty of scope for creative ideas. Mrs Sarmardin has more details in her article in today’s newsletter.

THE BISHOPS' RELIGIOUS LITERACY ASSESSMENT 2019
At the request of the Western Australian Bishops, Year 3, Year 5 and Year 9 students in Catholic schools across Western Australia will take part in The Bishops’ Religious Literacy Assessment (BRLA) from the week commencing Monday 5 August in Term 3. The assessment will be accessible to students online.
The Bishops’ Religious Literacy Assessment is a large-scale, standardised assessment that consists of a series of Religious Education (RE) tests developed and marked by Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA). The purpose of the BRLA is to measure student learning of the content in the RE curriculum. Formal school and student reports are produced by CEWA and will become available to schools in Term 4.
The BRLA provides a ‘point in time’ snapshot of students performance in RE. Students’ knowledge and understanding of the content of the RE curriculum is assessed using a combination of multiple choice, short and extended response items. Students’ faith is not assessed. The use of the BRLA complements the school-based assessment programs in RE.
Please contact your child’s teacher or myself if you have any enquires regarding the administration of The Bishops’ Religious Literacy Assessment.
