Hello Mt. Vernon Families,

As we close out the school year, we continue to focus on two important attributes—being Risk-Takers and Reflective. We encourage our students to try new things, speak up with courage, and think about how they’ve grown and what they’ve learned.

I also want to take a moment to thank you for the privilege of serving as your Interim Principal these past months. It has been an honor to be part of such a warm, resilient, and hardworking school community.

We are excited to welcome Veronica Soltero Godínez as the new Principal of Mt. Vernon Elementary! She brings great experience and a passion for dual language education.

Hola familias de Mt. Vernon,

Mientras cerramos el año escolar, continuamos enfocándonos en dos atributos importantes: ser audaces y reflexivos. Invitamos a nuestros alumnos a atreverse a intentar cosas nuevas, expresarse con valentía y reflexionar sobre su crecimiento y lo que han aprendido.

También quiero tomar un momento para agradecerles por darme el privilegio de servir como su directora interina durante estos últimos meses. Ha sido un honor formar parte de una comunidad escolar tan cálida, resiliente y dedicada.

Estamos muy emocionados de darle la bienvenida a Verónica Soltero Godínez como la nueva directora de Mt. Vernon. Ella aporta una gran experiencia y una verdadera pasión por la educación en dos idiomas.

In May, we celebrate being Risk Takers—students who are courageous, resilient, and willing to step outside their comfort zone. Risk takers try new things, face challenges with determination, and learn from both success and failure.

As we close the school year in June, we focus on being Reflective. Reflective students think about their learning and experiences, consider how they’ve grown, and set goals for the future. They take time to understand their strengths and areas for improvement, always striving to be their best selves.

Together, these attributes encourage students to take initiative, learn from life, and finish the school year with confidence and thoughtfulness.

En mayo, celebramos a los Audaces—alumnos valientes, perseverantes y dispuestos a salir de su zona de confort. Los audaces se atreven a probar cosas nuevas, enfrentan desafíos con determinación y aprenden tanto del éxito como de los errores.

Al cerrar el ciclo escolar en junio, nos enfocamos en ser Reflexivos. Los alumnos reflexivos piensan sobre su aprendizaje y experiencias, consideran cómo han crecido y establecen metas para el futuro. Se toman el tiempo para reconocer sus fortalezas y áreas de mejora, siempre esforzándose por ser su mejor versión.

Juntos, estos atributos inspiran a nuestros alumnos a tomar la iniciativa, aprender de la vida y cerrar el año escolar con confianza y reflexión.

How Can Parents Help Their Children Become Risk-Takers and Reflective Learners?

Risk-takers are willing to try new things, take on challenges, and stand up for what they believe in—even when it's not easy. Reflective learners take time to think about their actions, their learning, and how they can grow.

Here’s how you can support both traits at home:

• Encourage your child to try new activities—even if they feel unsure or nervous.

• Celebrate effort, bravery, and learning from mistakes.

• After a challenge or experience, ask your child to reflect on what went well and what could be improved.

• Model reflection by thinking aloud about your own day or choices.

• Support journaling, drawing, or quiet time as a way to process thoughts and feelings.

Try asking:

• “What’s something new you were brave enough to try today?”

• “What did you learn about yourself?”

• “If you could do that again, what might you do differently?”

• “How did that experience help you grow?”

¿Cómo pueden los padres ayudar a sus hijos a ser audaces y reflexivos?

Los alumnos audaces se atreven a intentar cosas nuevas, enfrentan desafíos y defienden lo que creen correcto, incluso cuando es difícil. Los alumnos reflexivos se toman el tiempo para pensar sobre sus acciones, su aprendizaje y cómo pueden mejorar.

Aquí tienes algunas formas de apoyar ambos atributos en casa:

• Anima a tu hijo(a) a participar en nuevas actividades, aunque sienta dudas o nervios.

• Celebra el esfuerzo, la valentía y el aprendizaje a partir de los errores.

• Después de un reto o experiencia, pregúntale qué salió bien y qué se podría mejorar.

• Da el ejemplo reflexionando en voz alta sobre tu propio día o tus decisiones.

• Fomenta el uso de un diario, dibujos o tiempo tranquilo para procesar pensamientos y emociones.

Prueba haciendo preguntas como:

• “¿Qué intentaste hoy que requirió valentía?”

• “¿Qué aprendiste sobre ti mismo(a)?”

• “Si pudieras hacerlo de nuevo, ¿qué harías diferente?”

• “¿Cómo te ayudó esa experiencia a crecer?”
