A Message From the Principal
Start Strong! Finish Stronger!
Greetings GEC Families,
We have had a great start to the school year! The energy from our scholars and staff has been refreshing as all are excited and ready for the year ahead. Classroom teachers spent the first few days establishing routines and expectations while also prioritizing community-building activities. We look forward to the exciting work of educating and progressing scholars academically.
PowerSchool Access
PowerSchool access allows you to examine your scholars’ grades and attendance. We ask that parents ensure their email addresses, home addresses, and phone numbers are up to date. Please make sure your emergency contact information is up to date as well. Please sign up for the parent portal to see all of your scholars’ grades. If you need assistance call the school and speak with Ms. Smith or email her at ellen.smith@detroitk12.org.
Volunteer. We Need Your Support!
All applicants must complete volunteer applications every year on the Galaxy website at http://dpscd.galaxydigital.com/. Applicants can obtain this link from the DPSCD website.
Board adopted Policy 3120.09 – Volunteers defines volunteers in two levels:
Level I: A volunteer who has contact with students, within the presence of a District employee or is assigned duties such as an office assistant that may not directly involve student engagement. Level I require an Internet Criminal History Access Tool (ICHAT) and the Michigan State Police Sex Offender Registry check.
Level II: A volunteer who has direct contact with students outside of the presence of a District employee except as noted above, or who is assigned duties to include, but not limited to, tutoring, overnight duties (e.g., chaperoning an overnight field trip), coaching responsibilities, or a long-term mentoring assignment.
REPEAT ITEMS
Attendance Matters
Learning starts with good attendance. Help your child succeed in school by building good attendance habits at the start of the school year.
Attendance is a vital factor in scholar achievement, and any absences from school represents a potential educational loss to the scholar.
Did You Know?
Starting in preschool and kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
Missing 10%, or about 2 days each month over the course of a school year, can make it harder to learn to read.
Scholars can still fall behind if they miss just 1 or 2 days every few weeks.
Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
Absences and tardiness can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.
Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit early so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Eventually good attendance will be a skill that will help them succeed in high school, college and career.
Breakfast and lunch is FREE for all scholars daily. Breakfast is served daily between 7:30a.m. and 7:45 a.m. Breakfast will not be served after the instructional day begins.
Regular attendance is key to your scholar’s success! To support their learning journey, please note that scholars who miss more than 45 days of school will be automatically retained for the next school year. Let’s work together to ensure every student has the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential!
Class communication
Our school uses ClassDojo to communicate with parents where teachers can instantly share messages, updates and photos from class. The Principal will share a weekly newsletter each Monday with updates and school information. Be sure to sign up to class Dojo with your scholar's teacher!
