Beckham Blast
Update on all things Beckham from Mrs. Dassing August 2024
Principal Musings
Dear Bengal Families,
Welcome to the first edition of the Beckham Blast for the 2024-2025 school year. This is generally a monthly update that will supplement the emails that we need to send out more frequently. Everything is also cataloged on our website in hopes of being sure information is easy to locate and communication flows.
We are excited to welcome everyone back on Tuesday August 13. This school year will mark the 5th year. We are excited for the Class of 2025 and welcoming the Class of 2028!
High school is one of the most memorable times of life and we want to make it special for everyone. In addition to the fun traditions and experiences, we also hold a very high standard for student achievement and behavior. What I am describing is encompassed in our mission that we call the "I's of the Tiger". We challenge all Bengals, students and adults, to exhibit Intelligence, Integrity, and Involvement. We will explore each of these with students and work to help them embrace and understand the importance of each one.
In this blast you will find a myriad of information to help start the school year smoothly. You can also find a wealth of information on our website. We will highlight pieces here that we think are most important at this time. Please reach out to us with any questions and let us know how we can help in any way!
Your very proud principal,
Mrs. Dassing

Important Information
Daily Schedules
Daily Schedules for the first 10 days are a bit different. Each day students will report to CREW for the first 10 days. Students may arrive on campus no earlier than 7:30 am and should report to the student center (gym lobby, cafe, courtyard).
Starting Monday August 27, we will run a regular schedule.
Teachers will go over this with all students so don't worry!
Late Ins and Early Outs
Late ins and Early outs must have an approved form completed and have a pass card that will be worn with the ID before they will be honored. For required student counts all students must report to CREW on the first 10 days of school at 8:30 am. We will try to get all forms processed as quickly as possible for late ins and early outs. Please be patient.
For students with a first block CAS class, you should report to the CAS and they will have a LBHS CREW session for you there.

Electronics Policy Update
As we continue to strive for excellence in education at Lucy Beckham High School, we want to ensure that our students are provided with the best possible learning environment. To this end, we are reinforcing and strengthening our school cell phone policy. Currently, all cell phone use is up to the discretion of the teacher. This is still the case but we are implementing school wide expectations and procedures to minimize disruption to the learning environment.
Pending South Carolina Legislation:
As you are aware, there is pending legislation in South Carolina regarding cell phone use in instructional settings. The proposed law aims to standardize cell phone policies across all schools in the state, reinforcing the importance of minimizing distractions during instructional time. This legislation supports our school’s initiative and underscores the growing recognition of the need to create focused and productive learning environments.
Research Supporting the Policy:
Numerous studies have shown that cell phones can be a significant distraction in the classroom. According to research students who do not use their phones during class tend to have higher academic achievement compared to those who do. The study highlights that the presence of cell phones can reduce students' attention and retention of information, ultimately impacting their learning outcomes.
In addition, cell phones can interfere with deep learning and critical thinking. When students are frequently checking their phones, they miss out on important opportunities to engage deeply with the material and participate in meaningful classroom discussions. By minimizing these distractions, students can develop better concentration and critical thinking skills, which are essential for academic success.
Impacts of Social Media and the Need for Engagement:
Social media can be particularly distracting for students, as it often leads to constant notifications and a desire to check updates frequently. This not only interrupts the learning process but also affects mental well-being. Research has shown that excessive use of social media can lead to anxiety, depression, and a sense of social isolation.
Moreover, face-to-face interaction is crucial for the development of social skills and emotional intelligence. Encouraging students to engage with their peers and teachers during class fosters a supportive and collaborative learning environment. By limiting cell phone use, we aim to promote more meaningful interactions and help students develop strong interpersonal skills.
Policy Details:
To create an optimal learning environment, we are implementing the following guidelines:
Cell Phone Storage: Students are required to keep their cell phones turned off or on silent mode and stored in the designated cell phone holder in each classroom.
Teacher Review: Teachers will review the cell phone storage procedures with students and reinforce the need to not be distracted as well as consequences for lack of cooperation.
Use During the Day: Students may use their cell phones before and after school, during transition, ILT and lunch provided they do not disrupt others.
Emergencies: In case of emergencies, parents can contact the school office, and we will ensure that messages are promptly delivered to the students. Also, in the event of an emergency at school, students will have access to their cell phones.
Medical Exemptions: Students that must have their cell phones for documented medical purposes will have an exemption and this will be coordinated through our health clinic and communicated to teachers.
LBHS Cell Phone Policies and Procedures: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qnqAMNnWSUlG5L1BlEkGM8mDm9QnCcpql29SPb0tpLc/edit?usp=sharing
We understand that cell phones are an important tool for communication and safety. However, it is crucial that they do not interfere with the educational process. By limiting cell phone use during instructional time, we aim to enhance students’ focus, participation, and academic performance.
Your Support:
We kindly request your support in reinforcing this policy at home. Please discuss the importance of minimizing distractions and encourage your child to adhere to the school’s guidelines. Your cooperation is essential in helping us create a productive learning environment for all students.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding this policy, please feel free to contact the administrative team or call the front office at 843-953-2900. We appreciate your understanding and support as we work together to ensure the best educational experience for our students.
