Happy New Year! We hope your holiday season was filled with joy and quality time with loved ones. As we start the new year, we have had a great two weeks back to school and are excited to continue working together to support your child’s success.

Please note, there will be no school on Monday, January 20th, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Quarter Ending Soon A quick reminder that the current quarter will end next Friday, January 24th. This is an important time for students to complete any outstanding assignments and focus on finishing the quarter strong. Please encourage your child to check in with their teachers, check PowerSchool, and check Schoology if they have any questions or need additional support. Report cards will be viewable in PowerSchool on Wednesday 2/5.

The Importance of Attendance Consistent attendance plays a critical role in academic success. Each day of school offers valuable learning opportunities that contribute to your child’s growth and development. Please ensure your child attends school every day, arrives on time, and stays engaged. If your child is unable to attend due to illness or other reasons, kindly notify the school as soon as possible. Please see below for more details and important reminders from our attendance office.

On a personal note, I wanted to share some exciting news with everyone that I am expecting our second child, a baby boy, due at the end of May. I will be working to ensure that this school year finishes strong and that the new school year is off to a great start. I do not plan to be gone long and look forward to being back on campus with our Mustangs. Once I am out on leave, there will be an interim Principal to help ensure our school continues to thrive and our students flourish until I return.

En una nota personal, quería compartir con todos una noticia emocionante: estoy esperando nuestro segundo hijo, un varón, que nacerá a fines de mayo. Trabajaré para asegurarme de que este año escolar termine bien y que el nuevo año escolar comience de la mejor manera. No planeo estar ausente por mucho tiempo y espero volver al campus con nuestros Mustangs. Una vez que me vaya de licencia, habrá un director interino para ayudar a garantizar que nuestra escuela continúe prosperando y que nuestros estudiantes prosperen hasta que regrese.

Growth Mindset and Lifelong Learning

Students in ELD class strengthened their analytical skills by practicing CER (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning). Through structured writing exercises, they learned to construct clear arguments, support their ideas with evidence, and explain their reasoning effectively.

Communication and Collaboration

English classes emphasized teamwork as students collaborated in groups to discuss texts and complete projects. This approach encouraged critical thinking, active listening, and the sharing of diverse perspectives.

Healthy Habits and Life Skills

Our PBIS Cart continues to be a popular reward for students who demonstrate responsibility, respect, and thoughtfulness as scholars. Students earn Mustang Moments for their positive behavior and can redeem them for various prizes. This system not only celebrates good choices but also promotes healthy decision-making and the development of essential life skills.

Any students who would still like to donate the requested $50 can bring cash or a check to the main office. All donations will go towards end of the year activities such as the picnic and dance.

Last call for 8th grade shirts! Please double check sizes; these are custom shirts and cannot be returned. Students are encouraged to have an 8th grade t-shirt to wear for the panoramic picture, picnic, and more events that will take place over the next few months.

All absences must be verified by a student's parent/legal guardian within 24 hours by email, phone call or our online absence notification. Any absences not verified will be marked as "Truant".

What qualifies as an EXCUSED absence?

• Personal illness

• Health quarantine

• Medical and dental appointments (Please try to make these outside of school hours)

• Appearance in court

• Funeral

• Religious holidays, ceremony & instruction

• Naturalization ceremony to become a U.S. citizen

• Spending time with an immediate family member who is an active duty member of the uniformed services and has been called to duty for deployment to a combat zone or a combat support position or is on leave from or has immediately returned from deployment

* If your child arrives late to school, they are to check in at the Attendance Office to obtain a tardy pass. All tardies are considered unexcused unless they were at a medical appointment in which we would require a doctor's note or appointment slip. Student's arriving more than 30 minutes pass the start of the school day will be considered "Truant"

* If you need to pick up your student early from school, we ask that you call or email our attendance office to make the arrangements. The latest time to request an off-campus pass is 2:45 p.m. If a parent comes to the campus without advance notice, it will delay getting your student to the front office as the process will take longer

* Students: If you are not feeling well, please DO NOT text or call your parents asking them to come pick you up. We ask that you please get a pass from your teacher to come to the health office. Our Health Services Assistant will call your parent/legal guardian and arrange for an Off Campus Pass.

Medication on Campus:

* The Torrance Unified School District has strict rules on medications allowed on campus. Over-the-counter drugs (example: aspirin, ibuprofen, allergy tablets) and prescribed medications are treated the same. Parents must submit a physician signed Medication Authorization Form for all medications, including over-the-counter, that are brought to school. Medications will be kept in the Heath Office and administered to students under the Health Clerk's supervision.

INHALERS: Inhalers may be carried by the student if authorized by the doctor and a backup may be kept in the health office. The student must fill out a "contract to carry" form. This form is a contract between the student, the doctor and the school which states that they use the medication properly, do not share, etc.

Medicamentos en el campus:

* El Distrito Escolar Unificado de Torrance tiene reglas estrictas sobre los medicamentos permitidos en el campus. Los medicamentos de venta libre (por ejemplo: aspirina, ibuprofeno, pastillas para la alergia) y los medicamentos recetados se tratan de la misma manera. Los padres deben presentar un formulario de autorización de medicación firmado por un médico para todos los medicamentos, incluidos los de venta libre, que se traigan a la escuela. Los medicamentos se guardarán en la Oficina de Salud y se administrarán a los estudiantes bajo la supervisión del Auxiliar de Salud.
