SCAMPER PROJECTS DEBUT IN NOMEMBER
At this point students are well into working on their projects. We have discussed the projects in great detail and have a plan in place that breaks up the assignment into smaller parts. Students have completed a portion of the "thinking / planning" stage of the work in class. They have brainstormed ideas, drawn pictures, listed materials, and thought through the parts of SCAMPER they will use.
I requested students keep their SCAMPER assignment in the TAKE HOME folder so if they find free time, they can use those moments to work on their SCAMPER paper work. This is helpful because it reinforces independence and using time wisely.
There are so many items we have at home that simply get recycled or thrown away. The SCAMPER Project allows students to find resources they have at home. Some students may opt to purchase additional materials for their projects. Our goal is to keep the budget to $5.00 or less. I have had several students report back their total cost for the project. It's great to hear, "I only spent $2.00 on my entire project!" This assignment is not meant to "break the bank." :)
Students are wild about the projects and the excitement is growing!!! I'm beyond excited!
1st grade Creature Feature
Due Tuesday, November 3
Design and create a new animal by combining two animals. Use the SCAMPER method and problem solving skills to create your new creature. Think of a creative name for the new creature. Build your animal out of supplies you have at home. A quality product will have some WOW factor. It should be obvious you spent time on your finished product. Complete the SCAMPER sheet and turn in with your project. Be prepared to tell the class about your new creature.
2nd Grade Zippy Clippy
Due Thursday, November 5 for both A and B groups
Design a new creation for a paper clip. Think of a creative name for your project. Use the SCAMPER method and problem solving skills to design the new creation. You can use as many paper clips (any size/ color) as you want. The paper clip can be adapted in many ways. Your new creation must have some use other than clipping papers together. A quality product will have some WOW factor and will show evidence you spent time on the project. Complete the SCAMPER sheet and turn in with your project. Be prepared to tell the class about your Zippy Clippy.
3rd Grade Wacky Walnut
Due Wednesday, November 4
Invent a contraption to pick up "walnuts." You may use nuts of ANY kind- acorns, walnut, almonds, pecans. I ask that you DO NOT use PEANUTS due to allergies. Your contraption should work as you are standing. You may not bend over when using your contraption. Use the SCAMPER method and problem solving skills to create the contraption. A quality product will have some WOW factor so that other students would want to own it. There should be evidence you spent time on the project. Complete the SCAMPER sheet and turn in with your project. Be prepared to tell the class about your Wacky Walnut.
4th Grade Indybanapolis
Due Tuesday November 3
Design a contraption to carry a plastic banana as far as possible. Use the SCAMPER method and problem solving skills to come up with ideas. The banana mobile will move forward and be powered only by 2 rubber bands (any size/kind). The banana must have a theme- add decals, stickers, paint, etc to illustrate your theme. Your project should NOT be a bare banana or a banana with tape stuck to it. A quality product will have some WOW factor so that other students would be impressed. There should be evidence you spent time on the project. Complete the SCAMPER sheet and turn in with your project. Be prepared to tell the class about your Indybanapolis.
5th Grade Mission Possible
Due Wednesday, November 4
Your mission is to create a device to transport a delicate and rare egg. Use the SCAMPER method and problem solving skills to create a container to carry your exotic egg. Be prepared to have your transport device dropped on carpet. When the transport device lands, the egg must remain intact. Place a raw egg in a Ziploc bag inside your device. Test your invention several times prior to deadline to make sure the egg stays intact. The day the project is due, I will provide an egg and Ziploc bag. A quality product will have some WOW factor so that other students would be impressed. There should be evidence you spent time on the project. Complete the SCAMPER sheet and turn in with your project. Be prepared to tell the class about your Mission Possible.
