Leaving Maplewood
Not returning to Maplewood next year? Let us know HERE. (This does not include our promoted 5th graders.)
Grade Level Changes
Grade Level Changes:
Next year, we will have a couple grade level changes for our teachers. Mrs. Wagner will be moving to first grade and Teacher Chou will be moving to third grade. All other teachers will remain in their current grade level placement.
Room Changes
Third grade will now join K-2 in the building. One of the third grade classrooms will become the counseling classroom and the other classroom is TBD.
Goodbyes
Goodbyes are always hard and this year is no exception.
Shannon Riley (school secretary) will not be with us next year. However, she will be in the subbing pool, so hopefully we will get to see her often.
This year we were so lucky to hire Kate Knochel to be our .5 school counselor. Kate taught counseling lessons to 4th and 5th graders, ran our student leadership group, started an attendance club, and so much more. Kate was hired under a social worker/counselor category which now only exists for Title 1 schools in PPS. Losing a .5 counselor will have large widespread effects on our counseling system. Losing Kate, specifically, makes this loss even greater because of how amazing she is. We will miss you in so many ways, Kate.
Tricia is our .5 ESL teacher who joined us this year. She has transformed the ESL department this year because of her excellent community building skills. Students felt more a part of Maplewood than ever before and their English skills skyrocketed. We will miss Tricia as she moves to another school in PPS next year due to internal seniority bumps.
Alex, a paraeducator, is moving on to pursue work more in line with his end career goals. Alex used to be our Playworks coach last year and we were lucky enough to snatch him up as a paraeducator when we learned he was interested. We will miss Alex and his positive spirit.
Ethan, a paraeducator, has been a phenomenal asset to our Maplewood team. He is calm, positive and supportive in the most challenging moments. He has been with us for two years and we will feel a large hole next year without him.
Student Class Placement:
We take class placement very seriously at Maplewood. Ensuring that we place a student with the proper teacher in a balanced community is our goal and we will be using a very systematic process to do so.
Your child’s teacher knows your child very well; they know their strengths, how they learn, and what they need to meet their potential. With all this knowledge, teachers will work diligently in their Professional Learning Community (PLC) meeting, along with Jenni Heaton and myself, to place students in a class for next year. Teachers will not place students based on a specific teacher, rather they will place them on the characteristics of the next year’s teachers and match them with the needs of each individual student (ex: great classroom management, loves to do art projects, etc…)
These initial class lists will then be reviewed by each specialist teacher, our special education teacher, our school psychologist, our counselors and myself. Using this process, we are able to tap into all the knowledge of the staff who know your child, in addition to their teacher. Once balanced class communities are created, I will assign a teacher to the class lists.
Please know, this means that we do not accept teacher requests for placing your child in a class for next year. If, for some reason, you feel there is pertinent information that we do not already know which will affect how your child should be placed, please let us know by filling out THIS form.
Step-Up Day
On June 12, students in grade k-4 will have the opportunity to visit the next grade level and their teachers. This is called Step-Up Day and is a great way to reduce anxiety for some students and build excitement about moving onto the next grade level.

Successful School Survey
Each year, we gather student, staff, and family feedback through the Successful Schools Survey. The results help our school understand the needs of your students, staff, and families, as well as support the development of your school continuous improvement plans (SCIP). We want to hear from you! Your voice matters! On May 6th, the survey window opens. Be on the lookout for emails and texts with the link to the survey. Thanks!
