From Our Principal
Richmond “Speak Up!” Anti-Bullying Campaign
I am so thankful to our PTA & Oya No Kai leaders who have been working with me to support our anti-bullying campaign efforts. To create a more welcoming and inclusive school culture, our students will continue to receive lessons in school on anti-bullying and inclusion topics, and our 4th/5th grade Student Leadership Team will be hosting Kindness Challenges later this month. These efforts will also continue in the Fall of the 2024-25 school year.
Student Leadership members have identified the cafeteria, recess, and hallways as the most common places to experience unkind behaviors from peers or witness inappropriate behaviors. These are the areas we need more trusted adults (parent volunteers) in. Just having friendly adults in these spaces to greet and interact positively with students can significantly reduce the likelihood of negative behaviors taking place.
Parents interested in becoming a volunteer can click HERE to review and sign Richmond’s Parent Volunteer Agreements. Then early next week our PTA/ONK leaders will be posting the volunteer sign-up sheet on Konstella. Prior to signing up in Konstella, all volunteers will need to review and sign the agreements.
Richmond Foundations Spring 2024
Run4Richmond was organized by some of our amazing parent volunteers and the funds raised can be used towards additional staff for the 2024-2025 school year. However, we currently do not have a parent leader assigned to Foundations who can assist me with any fundraising efforts our community may want to participate in this spring.
PPS Foundations is the only fundraising opportunity that allows schools to utilize the funds raised towards additional staff in our school building. The staff must be funded each year to renew their status as an active employee in our school, which means the positions funded for this year will not continue without continued funds from Foundations.
Office Staff: 0.5 position must be funded at about $33,806 for the 2024-25 school year
Without these funds we will only have 1.5 office staff next year instead of 2.
Educational Assistant: 1.0 position must be funded at about $60,450 for 2024-25.
Without these funds we will not have an EA next year. PPS cut this position.
I will be sending a follow up message to the community that will include an opportunity for families to share their thoughts on Foundations and staffing. A variety of positions can be funded through Foundations, but these types of decisions will need to be made in collaboration between our staff and families.
If you are interested in learning more about becoming our parent leader for Foundations, please reach out to me at setotharp@pps.net. Your commitment in this role would only need to be for this spring, but may continue into next year if you wish to.
Foundations parent leader(s) will not be required to respond to community questions, concerns or complaints regarding Foundations or staffing. That is the responsibility of the principal.
Foundations parent leader(s) would only need to support the principal by:
handing out fliers to community members on how to make donations,
volunteering at the Spring Festival to run a Foundations table to pass out fliers,
finding a fun way to notify the community of how much we have raised so far (like the thermometer we used for Run4Richmond).
Coffee With The Principal
I will be at the PTA’s Rich Coffee in the cafeteria on April 18th and would be happy to address any questions or concerns you may have about Richmond. See you there!
Meet Our New Library Media Specialist!
Hello Richmond community! I am your new Teacher Librarian, Karinsa Kelly. I will be here to finish out the school year. I know your students have had a tumultuous year, so we will be spending the next few months just encouraging a love of reading and of the library and making the library a safe, fun space for them (while sneaking some literacy and library skills in too.) We’ve had a really successful first week and the students have been VERY excited to hear they have a real librarian again, which is very sweet. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions about how the library will go for the rest of the year.
From The Richmond BSU
Our first Richmond BSU family event in March was terrific! Thanks to each person who participated and made the event possible, especially the families. Food was oishii! Plenty of good vibes and community.
setotharp@pps.net。

April 26th, Friday, will be Japanese hot lunch day to taste Japanese Curry Rice!
[What is a Japanese hot lunch?]
Richmond students can experience tasting Japanese food for their lunch, this time Japanese Curry Rice.
