The RIDE accountability report cards are now public for the 2022-2023 school year and good news.... We are back to a four star school for the first time since 2019!

Out of the five "buckets" we earned five stars in four categories and a four star rating for achievement and growth on state testing. We have one of the highest graduation rates in the state and we reduced our chronic absenteeism down from 18% to 11%! The system is built so that schools are only as good as their lowest star. (Four due to testing).

A New CTE Academy Focused on Childhood Education Has Launched

at Scituate High School

SCITUATE, R.I., December 11, 2024 – Students across Rhode Island interested in a career in

early education can now apply to enroll in a new Career and Technical Education (CTE)

Academy for Childhood Education at Scituate High School. The Academy, which was approved

by the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) on Friday, December 6, will begin

accepting applications for out-of-district students in the spring.

“We are thrilled to offer this exciting new CTE Academy not only to our students at Scituate

High School but also to those from surrounding districts who are passionate about pursuing a

career in education,” said Superintendent Laurie Andries. “We decided to seek approval for this

program because we saw a clear interest and enthusiasm from our students in exploring this

field. As a district, we are committed to providing career and technical education that aligns

with the future needs of our workforce, and this Academy is a perfect example of that

commitment.”

This approval and program would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of Mrs. Jill Morton! She works tirelessly each day to support our students and is the driving force of this new opportunity!

This Childhood Education Academy is designed to provide students with the skills, knowledge,

and experience needed to pursue careers in childhood education—a field that plays a critical

role in shaping the development of young learners. The program will offer hands-on experience

in child development, classroom management, educational strategies, and more, with

opportunities for internships and collaboration with the district’s three elementary schools.

“The Childhood Education Academy is a great addition to our current CTE offerings at Scituate,”

said SHS Principal Michael Hassell. “Students enrolled in the program will have the opportunity

to create lesson plans and execute those plans in real-life settings as they work with elementary

students within the district.”

Earlier this year, Rhode Island State Representative William W. O’Brien expressed concern over

the teacher shortage in a press release published in March. “Our state is facing a significant

shortage of qualified teachers, and this troubling fact poses a real threat to the quality of

education received by some of our state’s students,” O’Brien said. “Part of the teacher shortage

problem in our state is that we cannot get enough new, qualified teachers to enter the

profession.”

By offering this new CTE Academy, Scituate High School aims to encourage students to explore

a rewarding career in a field that is facing a critical need for workers in the state of Rhode

Island. Students enrolled at SHS, as well as those from neighboring districts who express an

interest in a career in education, are invited to apply.

News from National Honor Society

In early February, eligible juniors and seniors will be invited to complete candidate forms to apply for membership in the National Honor Society. Any interested student or parent should read the bylaws here (also posted on the district website) for information about requirements for membership, including community service hour minimums. Anyone with questions should contact advisor Mrs. Stormont at maggie.stormont@scituateschoolsri.net.

Students, did you know that you can get extra help in reading, writing or math after school if you need it?

Ms. Antonelli (ELA) is available for Reading and Writing support after school on Wednesday from 2:20-3:20. Also, if you have a quiz or test you need to make up, you can drop in to Ms. Antonelli’s class after school to get your work done. Room 210

Mr. Soucar (Math) is after school on Thursdays from 2:20-3:20 for Math Academic Support. Room 109

Ms. Manchester (Special Ed) is also available for academic support to assist students with Math, ELA, Science, or Social Studies on Thursday from 2:20-3:20. Room 208

FAFSA is OPEN!

The U.S. Department of Education has released the 2025-26 FAFSA form – 10 days in advance of the agency’s stated goal of December 1. The online FAFSA form is available to all students and families at FAFSA.gov, and the Department is processing submissions and sending them to schools. You can find their announcement here. Students who are planning for life after high school during the 2025-2026 school year are highly encouraged to fill out the form. It is critical to ensure that all students are completing their FAFSA to have a chance at financial support for their postsecondary education plans. Completing the FAFSA is a gateway for not only federal financial aid, but also grants, scholarships, and work-study.

Students and contributors (parents and guardians) will need to create an FSA ID/StudentAid ID prior to filling out the application. The FSA ID is a username and password combination used to log in to the U.S. Department of Education online systems and is used every year when filling out the FAFSA.

To help communicate the importance of FAFSA, RIDE has created monthly messages for you to share with students and families (including necessary links and directions).

CSS Profile is open!

Students should login to collegeboard to complete the CSS Profile for any schools they are applying to that require it. The CSS Profile allows students to be considered for institutional grants not available through the FAFSA. Many, but NOT all schools require students to complete the CSS Profile.

Deadlines are creeping up on college bound seniors!

Students with January 1 deadlines should be communicating with their counselors before break, if they need assistance with those applications! Any college bound students who have not started their common application or submitted a brag sheet should do so before Friday!

Monday December 2nd 2024: HS wrestling after School in the back gym, Girls basketball 4:00pm –

6pm in main gym, Boys basketball 6pm to 8pm in main gym. Boys and Girls Indoor track will start after

school at 2:30 in room 216.

As soon as the first practice takes place all correspondence to athletes and parents will be from

coaches.

The Scituate Athletic Booster Club is thrilled to congratulate the Scituate Wrestling team on an outstanding performance at the 2025 Chad Antoch Memorial Tournament! The team secured an impressive second-place finish with a total of 188.5 points, showcasing their incredible talent and hard work.

We are especially proud to recognize the five individual champions and two third-place finishers who contributed to this remarkable achievement. Their dedication, determination, and sportsmanship exemplify the spirit of Scituate athletics and make us all proud to be part of this community.

Despite a 3-0 loss to Ponaganset at Levy Ice Rink in Burriville on Saturday (12/21/24), the Cranston West co-op team, featuring standout Spartan juniors Grant Bailey #3, Brady Scanlon #11, and Tommy Slater #14, put up a valiant effort. Bailey anchored the defense with disciplined positioning and crucial clears generating multiple scoring chances under pressure, while Scanlon battled along the boards, created space for passes and drove hard to the net from the right wing all game. At center, Slater checked Pono’s defense and challenged their goalie repeatedly. Although frustration set in as Ponaganset’s goalie turned away their best efforts, the Spartans never stopped pushing to get on the scoreboard. Come cheer on our Spartan hockey players, next on January 3rd v. Cumberland! Go Spartans!
