FAC Weekly Update
March 2, 2024
Good Afternoon, FAC Family
We hope that you and yours had a terrific week! Once again, the partnership with the Peace Center has generated an incredible learning experience for our students. The Jeff Hamilton Trio was in residence this week, working with our AM and PM Jazz Studies students and performing a concert Thursday night in the Recital Hall.
I hope that our students realize how fortunate they are to have a full week with the some of the finest teaching artists in the world. Many thanks to our friends at the Peace Center for investing in the education of our students!
I also encourage students from ALL arts areas to attend our FAC events. The best way for an artist to grow is to see...ART! An artist's perspective deepens from exposure to other art forms, so students should be prioritizing attending our art and architecture shows, dance and theatre performances, and concerts. Most of the events are free, and those that are not are an investment into the artist's journey. Growth comes from exposure.
If you feel compelled to help continue these types of artist residence experiences for our current and future FAC artists, please consider buying a ticket to the Elevate Showcase or making a donation to the FAC Partners. The future is bright at the FAC...let's ensure that our students get all that they deserve!

This Week's Student Leadership Lesson
From "Hidden Potential" - by Adam Grant
Adam Grant on Learning Styles
“The way you like to learn is what makes you comfortable, but it isn’t necessarily how you learn best. Sometimes you even learn better in the mode that makes you the most uncomfortable, because you have to work harder at it.”
“This is the first form of courage: being brave enough to embrace discomfort and throw your learning style out the window.”
“You might still have a preferred style of acquiring new knowledge and skills. What we now know is that your preference isn’t fixed, and playing only to your strengths deprives you of the opportunity to improve on your weaknesses.”
Congratulations to Anna Cassell!
Congratulations to Anna Cassell (Grade 11, Visual Arts) on earning the Gallery Internship at the Greenville Center for Creative Arts! Anna will work with GCCA's Gallery Director in all aspects related to art exhibition preparation, design, and writing over the next 10 months.
About Anna, from the GCCA Website:
Anna is an emerging artist who is currently exploring mediums of fiber, photography, ceramics, and painting. Through themes of visceral adolescence, she plays with how color and interaction create playful tension. Anna is a current member of the National Art Honor Society, as well as National Honor Society. Anna’s work has been featured in the 2021 and 2023 Student Juried Shows at the Fine Arts Center, Greenville Journal Young at Art Magazine, the 2022 and 2023 Artisphere, among others.

From the FAC Parent Guild
Volunteers Needed for March Events, Anti-Prom
Parents have lots of opportunities to get involved at the Fine Arts Center during March! Volunteers can choose between weeknight, weekend, and school day shifts. All shifts are open to parents from any art discipline!
The Parent Guild is seeking volunteers to sell tickets and merch for three evening performances. (Please note that these shifts overlap with the start of the show, so they're best for parents who do not have a student performing that night.) We also need several parents to serve food and clean up after Anti-Prom, so our students can enjoy the big event on Saturday, March 9th! For parents who have some flexibility in their daytime schedule, we've set aside a day before Spring Break to sell merch to students as they arrive for morning and afternoon classes.
Look over the shifts below and sign up for one (or more!) if you're able to help out. Thank you for supporting the amazing students and faculty at the Fine Arts Center!

Upcoming Artists-in-Residence
The Jasper String Quartet - March 4-8
The Jasper String Quartet will be in residence during the week of March 4, courtesy of our Artist-in-Residence program with the Peace Center and Fine Arts Center Partners.
Celebrating its eighteenth season in 2024, the Jasper String Quartet is hailed as “flawless in ensemble and intonation, expressively assured and beautifully balanced” (Gramophone). The Quartet’s “programming savvy” (clevelandclassical.com) evocatively connects the music of underrepresented and living composers to the canonical repertoire in thought-provoking programs. A recipient of Chamber Music America’s prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award, the Quartet’s playing is “sonically delightful and expressively compelling” (The Strad). The ensemble has released eight albums, including Unbound, named by the New York Times as one of the year’s 25 Best Classical Recordings.
The Jasper String Quartet is the Founder and Artistic Director of Jasper Chamber Concerts, the Director of the Saint Paul Chamber Music Institute, and the Professional Quartet-in-Residence at Temple University's Center for Gifted Young Musicians.

Interested students will need to provide proof of acceptance into the program/camp (email or hard copy) along with the submission of this form. https://forms.gle/Mefnc3QDhz8M3TjF8 The form is due Thursday, March 14, 2024.
