Message from Administration
Battle of the Books!
Battle of the Books is a yearly reading opportunity for 5th graders. They read 10 predetermined chapter books that were selected by the Howard County Library System. They get into teams and work with their coach to prepare for Battle of the Books. The competition took place Friday night at Merriweather Post Pavilion. It was a long night but filled with fun and excitement.
Thank you to the students who were not competing but came to cheer on their friends. That was so thoughtful.
Thank you to our parents who, not only supported their children, but helped with costumes, snacks, other supplies and cheering so loud! We appreciate your support and allowing your child to participate in this program.
A shout out to our amazing coaches this year. Thank you for giving your time throughout the year to make sure your teams were reading their books and help prepare them. Thank you for giving your Friday night (until almost 11 pm) to cheer on your team and support them throughout the competition. This demonstrates great dedication to our students. We can't do this without you. We really appreciate you and your efforts.
Congratulations to the following 5th grade students for a FANTASTIC showing at this year’s Battle of the Books competition!

We have a few adult volunteer positions we need to fill for our Wizards Fundraiser. Volunteers only do not need a ticket.
**** Driver - We need a driver to pick up 1 or 2 players from The Marriott near BWI at 8:15 a.m. and bring them to Glenwood Middle School for the Assembly and return them. Last year's parent and student LOVED riding and talking with Wizards player. You are permitted to stay and watch the assemblies at Glenwood, you just need to sign in at the office. Please contact Cathydatz@yahoo.com with any questions.
Souvenir sales - The Wizards will provide an iPad and you will be working with Glenwood Jr. Scholars volunteers at the souvenir table. You will be able to watch the game with your family however we will need coverage at halftime too. Please arrive at 4:30 p.m. for set up and training from the Wizards.
Security - These positions are to make sure no one but players enter the locker rooms before, during (standing by the door in the gym) and after the game. If we have multiple people sign up you will be able to spend time with your family.
Door - These are before game positions and will hand out wristbands, lanyards, or hand stamp pre-purchased ticket holders or ticket sales.
Water & Snacks - We need water bottles, Gatorade, and snacks (granola bars, power bars, snack size treats) for the Wizards as well as our Lisbon and Glenwood staff for before, during, and after the game. PLEASE drop off to either school by Wednesday, May 1st.
Set-up and Clean-up - We need help setting up the gym and tables as well as cleaning up after the game.
Truck - We are in need of a truck to transport 6 tables and the American and Maryland Flags from Lisbon ES to Glenelg HS. You can pick up anytime on Friday, May 3rd, but we ask they are delivered to Glenelg by 4:00 p.m. We will need the items brought back to Lisbon ES after the game at 9:00ish.
Message from the Office of Safety and Security
We appreciate everyone's help in making sure that our school is as safe as possible. All exterior doors are locked at all times. To maintain safety and security it is important that we all do our part:
- Do not let anyone in through exterior doors around the school.
- All visitors or anyone arriving late needs to check-in at the front lobby using the buzzer. We know it is in our nature to be nice and hold the door, but please do not let in people you do not know. The front office staff will be focusing on groups coming to the buzzer and ensuring that all parties check-in properly.
- Doors should not be propped open.
- If you see something suspicious, report it to a teacher, administrator, or other staff member.
Thanks for doing your part to help keep our school safe.

Helpful Hints for School Year 2024-2025
Dear Parents/Guardians:
As we get close to the end of this school year, we are in the process of planning for the 2024-2025 school year. One important piece of that planning process is input from you about your child.
No one knows a child better than his/her parent(s). With that in mind, I encourage you to complete the Lisbon Elementary Helpful Hints form below. The purpose of this form is for you to share specific information or helpful hints with the staff that will give next year’s teachers some information from you about your child.
When placing students, the staff, and administration utilize a wide range of criteria that are supportive of the Howard County philosophy of heterogeneous grouping. Some of these criteria include, but are not limited to:
- the personality of the child
- the gender balance in each classroom
- math strengths and needs
- written output
- test results
- reading strengths and needs
- special education requirements; IEP goals
- structured versus non-structured needs
- information from previous teachers and school counselor.
Administrators, your child’s current teachers, and your child’s 2024-2025 teachers will read the form you fill out. With that in mind, PLEASE DO NOT use this form for any of the following:
Specific teacher requests
Comments (positive or negative) about staff members
Grouping with friends
Isolating students from other students
Your input on this form will be used in our planning for your child rather than a letter requesting a specific teacher. Your response is OPTIONAL but is a very valuable source of information to the school staff and to the next teacher.
Please fill out and return the below form by May 3rd via email to christine_johnson@hcpss.org.
Thank you for your input and continued support,
Mrs. Anoff, Principal
Golden Lion Week
From May 6th - 10th, the Lisbon Community will be celebrating Golden Lion Week!
Each day, students who choose to display the days’ desired behaviors, will have the opportunity to earn golden coupons. Each earned golden coupon will be placed in a grade level bucket. At the end of the day, 5 students, from each grade level, will be awarded a Golden Lion Award, get their picture taken, and be displayed on one of the hallway bulletin boards. Students will also receive a Golden Lion swag necklace to keep! Families are encouraged to remind their students of each days’ desired behaviors.
We look forward to congratulating all of our Golden Lions!

2024-2025 Bus Service Registration
Parents/guardians whose children are eligible for bus transportation are asked to register to receive bus service each year to help the school system plan for student transportation needs. The transportation registration process will open at 9 a.m. Monday, April 8 through May 31, and will be completed online via HCPSS Connect Synergy. Registration must be done for each eligible child.
To be eligible for bus service, your child’s home address must be outside of a school’s walk zones. You can verify address eligibility in the HCPSS School Attendance Area Locator. After inputting your address, a window will appear that will indicate either bus or walk for each school level. Please note, the attendance area locator also includes a link for the bus stop locator, which is set for the current school year. Bus stop information for the 2024-2025 school year will be available in August.
You do not need to take any action if:
- Your child is not eligible for bus transportation
- Your child receives transportation as part of their Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan, or
- Your child is a graduating senior
Details on bus transportation registration, including a guide to register and scenarios families may see when registering, can be found online.
