Student - Led Conferences
STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES
We are looking forward to having our teachers meet with you and your child during Salk's Student - Led Conferences. During this time, students will showcase their goals and academic progress. It is important to include your child in these conferences so that they can take ownership of their academic plan for the year.
Conference dates and times are as follows:
Wednesday, October 25th from 4:30 to 7:30 PM
Thursday, October 26th from 1:00-3:30 PM & 4:30-7:30 PM
Classroom teachers sent out conference invitations by Thursday, October 12th. If you did not receive your notice for any reason, please click HERE to find the link to your child's teacher's Sign-Up Genius.
We look forward to seeing everyone at conferences. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely,
Anthony Birkmeier
Minutes Matter
The bell to start the school day rings at 8:30 a.m. We have had a problem with many students arriving late to school. This not only affects the student who is tardy, but also has an impact on the rest of the classroom. Many important events take place at the beginning of the school day. When a student arrives late, they are missing out on important classroom assignments as well as important announcements. They also interrupt the learning environment for the rest of the students. Please make every effort to assure your student starts the day off in positive way by getting them to school on time.
We have also have an increasing number of students leaving early daily. We dismiss at 3:30 PM unless otherwise noted. Students withdrawn early also miss on daily instruction and interventions. They also disrupt the learning environment. Please make every effort to schedule appointments outside the school day. We want to make sure all of our students are learning. Once we reach 3:15 we may not be able to dismiss your student early. With the many moving parts at the end of the school day, it is not always possible to redirect a student to the office at that time.
HALLOWEEN!
- Parade: A short "Halloween Parade" will take place beginning at 10:00AM on Tuesday, October 31st. Weather permitting, we will parade out the main doors (Door 1) across the crosswalk to St. Ronald's over to Clinton Villa (the residents love seeing our students dressed up) and loop back to the building. Our 6th grade students will lead the parade. All are welcome to come and watch our costume parade outdoors! (Please note- In the event of inclement weather, we will move our parade indoors and families will not be permitted to attend.)
- Classroom Activities: Classrooms/grade levels will be planning for Halloween activities and celebrations individually, either before or after the parade. If teachers request parent volunteers to help facilitate the classroom activities, all volunteers will have to submit a Background Check.
- Costumes: Students may come to school in costume on Tuesday, October 31st. They can stay in costume for the duration of the day. Costumes need to be school appropriate and cannot depict violence or excess blood/gore. No fake weapons are allowed in school (i.e. toy guns, swords, blades, etc). Costume masks can be worn for the parade, but not throughout the day. For costumes that have short skirts/shorts, leggings or pants need to be worn underneath.

Charlie the Therapy Dog
Charlie has made several visits to Salk with great success. Students are happy to see him and he really brightens the mood. Charlie will be coming back in 2 weeks. The date will be announced in next week's Scoop. Now that students and Charlie have become acquainted with one another, Charlie has started making visits in classrooms and saying hello to students.
Charlie's purpose is to ease student's anxieties and increase positive emotions. We do not want his presence to cause fear or anxiety. As a reminder, parents have the ability to opt out of having their student interact with Charlie. If you DO NOT want your student to be around Charlie, then please fill out the opt out form linked here.
For the safety of students with allergies and Charlie, he will not be in the lunch room. Charlie will also remain out of classrooms in which parents have a student who opt out. Charlie will be under my supervision and kept on a leash at all times.
Rules for Interacting with Charlie:
Use calm bodies and inside voices when around Charlie.
Always ask before petting Charlie.
Don't take food around Charlie/feed Charlie
