Walk, Don't Run - Is that the message?
When adopting and adapting educational technology one approach is to 'walk' steadily and not to 'run' headlong. I guess the implication is you are more likely to have issues if care is not taken or development time is limited. Some of us are not good at walking as such....and therefore get used to the wheels falling off requiring some help and support to fix.
What is my message here? Threefold:
1. Work out what your support systems are, or who your support team is:
- TechDems / EdTech in Learning and Teaching Futures is always here to support BUT in the current budget-less climate we cannot do everything
- You are encouraged to find buddies and work on tech integration together
- These can be firmly embedded into your PPR ready for review and promotion objectives
3. Share, share....and share:
- Share at school sessions, share at conferences
- Come to TechDem events, meetings and gatherings and share
- As educators you all know the best way to understand something is to have to teach it!
This May newsletter shares some older news as reminders and a few updates.
Enjoy!

Engageli Learning Environment - Important announcement and clarification
Engageli is business as usual at UniSQ. It is NOT a pilot anymore. We have committed to rolling this out over the next three years.
Did you know that?
This is being emphasised here as it seems some colleagues do not know this and therefore are not using Engageli because they think it might disappear.
We are here to help with your transformation to Engageli - technological and pedagogical.
- Start HERE to learn more
- Attend our regular 'Engageli Explorer' sessions
- Access the Engageli asynchronous onboarding modules
- How to access the modules
- Playback room where modules are kept
Create@UniSQ Student Portfolios - Do your students a favour!
The WordPress platform, hosted by CampusPress, is the ongoing, business as usual preferred method for student online/digital portfolios. Many disciplines are embedding portfolios from Year 1 through to the capstone course with great success.
NOTE: Students receive ONE portfolio only - not one per course. The goal is for this online publishing medium to be with them throughout their university degree and beyond!
If you are new to this practice and want to know more:
- Start here - Student portfolios using WordPress
- Browse the Create@UniSQ website
- Read the For Staff page to learn more about WHY and HOW
Program coordinators and AHLTSS - isn't it time your degrees/programs integrated authentic learning that occurs with individualised portfolios?
Get in touch and we can support.
AI Pedagogy Project
The AI Pedagogy Project (AIPP) initiated by Learning and Teaching Futures, is all-encompassing and aims to augment learning, teaching and research using Artificial Intelligence. The five essential areas of focus include exploration and development of AI tools, research into the impact of AI, academic development, learning design and assessment, and the AI for L&T Collective.
- READ MORE about the AI Pedagogy Project on our website
- The AILT Padlet - this is YOUR Padlet - please use, search AND contribute resources.
Activities include:
- AILTC Symposiums – All-inclusive events showcasing UniSQ and external speakers.
- AIPP monthly meetings (once again open to all) to share, discuss, learn, and explore synergies.
Shared understandings of AI and the impact on education
Discussed and shared goals for AI knowledge and upskilling during breakouts
Responded to polls with key areas of interest (possible future SIGs): Assessment 30%, Research 30%, Learning design 20%
Special Interest Groups (SIGs) based on key interested such as AI and Assessment, AI and GenAI...what do you need? Create a SIG!
Communication is through the AI Pedagogy Project Team - come and join in!
The AI Pedagogy Project gathers its momentum through monthly gatherings using this Engageli room.
Next meetings – come along, find your AI tribe and make a difference!

Reimagine Learning in an AI Empowered World
There have been two opportunities recently where Julie and Lisa have shared ideas and actions around AIEd in learning and teaching.
The first is our Balancing the Shift podcast, Episode 15. This episode is the first of our AI Pedagogy Project series where we Reimagine Learning in an AI Empowered World. Lisa shares recent explorations using Generative AI and prompt engineering and we discuss how to start considering what is available and when to use it.
The second is the keynote we delivered to the 4th AUN-TEPL Symposium, with theme AI for Personalised Learning, through our partner university, Mahidol, in Thailand.

- Recording of our keynote - this is a 7hour YouTube streamed recording of the day. To find us, start at 1:23 hours.
Horizon Report 2024
Look! The Horizon Report (Teaching and Learning HEd) 2024
Released on May 13, 2024
- Get the full report HERE
This report profiles the trends and key technologies and practices shaping the future of teaching and learning, and envisions a number of scenarios for that future. It is based on the perspectives and expertise of a global panel of leaders from across the higher education landscape.
Quotes from p. 24:
- “All higher education stakeholders will benefit from learning how to use AI responsibly…..With the appropriate knowledge and skills, faculty can use AI tools to support and improve teaching and learning, and students can focus on engaging in meaningful learning experiences.”
- "Supporting AI fluency is essential for institutions to mitigate AI-related risks….. Developments in AI technology are so rapid that institutions might find their training programs quickly outdated.”
Highlights from the Technologies trend are revealed in the video below.
Four Types of Video - New Educational Media Training Resources
This was shared with us recently from Lachlan Mears in LTF DLAV.
I am happy to share with you the Four Types of Video series. This series was co-created alongside Dr Daniel Maddock and myself which defines the four types of educational video and provides insightful examples of how to embedded them within learning.
I would also like to shout out to Amy Knie for the amazing animations that beautifully represent the implementation and use of media.
Four Types of Video Overview
- Four Types of Video: Interviews
- Four Types of Video: Presentations
- Four Types of Video: Demonstrations
- Four Types of Video: Dramatisations
Please share these resources with your colleagues. The full collection of media training resources can be found on the DLAV Resource Library.
For more detailed information on the four types of videos see here.
