Important for Grades 9-11! PSAT Day is October 23rd! 📝
CECHS students and families,
The PSAT is the beginning of a student's college journey. It is a vital exercise for gaining exposure to the test environment and getting feedback on what improvements to make. It is scored similarly to the SAT, with a potential total score range of 320 to 1520. (SAT scores range from 400 to 1600.) The average score is about 920, and a score between 1210 and 1520 would put that student in the top 10% of test-takers. All Early College students should aim for a score between 1200-1520!
Students, putting your all into the PSAT can help us identify areas of needed improvement and it will help you get a sense of what kind of score to expect on the SAT. You've got this!! 💙💙
With care,
Mrs. Starr
*The letter below was sent last week to all 9th-11th grade students and families via Jupiter.
CECHS EARNS FIVE STARS!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Congratulations to the staff, students and families of Cleveland Early College High School on earning the Ohio Department of Education's 5-star rating for the 2023-2024 school year!!
Schools are measured on performance based on the five key components below:
- Achievement: How students perform against state grade-level academic standards
- Progress: Whether a district exceeded student growth expectations
- Gap closing: A component of the overall rating
- Early literacy: A component of the overall rating
- Graduation: The percentage of students who graduate within a set timeframe
The overall rating is based on the performance in these five components, with each component receiving a score from 1 to 5 stars. The components are weighted based on their contribution to the overall rating. The rating scale is:
- 5 stars: Significantly exceeds state standards
- 4 stars: Exceeds state standards
- 3 stars: Meets state standards
- 2 stars: Needs support to meet standards
- 1 star: Needs significant support to meet standards
Unity Day October 16: Wear & Share Orange
It's that time of year: The Unity Day Orange Out: Wednesday, October 16th
Unity Day, started by the National Bullying Prevention Center as the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month, continues to grow every year as a tangible representation of the universal message that our society wants to promote kindness, acceptance and inclusion to prevent bullying.
On the third Wednesday of October, plan to support the event by participating in the simple call to action—wear and share the color orange! This year the date is Wednesday, October 16th. Sponsored by NOW/WAVE, the top 3 students dressed in the best/most orange will get a prize- get creative!
Why unity? For years, bullying was justified with expressions such as, “Bullying is a natural part of childhood,” “Bullying makes kids tougher,” or “Bullying is a rite of passage.” The goal of Unity Day is to bring together youth, parents, educators, businesses, and community members across the nation to emphasize the message that bullying is not acceptable, and that all students deserve to be safe in school, online, and in the community
Why the color orange? Unity Day is celebrated in October, and orange is a color commonly identified with the month and the autumn season. It is also a color that is associated with safety and visibility. It is a color described as warm and inviting, and its vibrancy makes an impactful statement.
*Students not participating in the Orange Out must be in CECHS dress code.
We can't wait to see your orange outfits to support Unity!
Best Regards,
CECHS NOW/WAVE

Girls Who Code
Case Western Reserve University's Girls Who Code focuses on bridging the gender gap in technology. They hold weekly sessions in which they teach fundamental computer science concepts to high school students in the Cleveland area who identify as female or non-binary. Sunday Arduino sessions run all semester and are a great way for students to learn about circuits, coding, and overall engineering practice. It's an amazing way for girls to be supported in learning skills that will help them find jobs and succeed throughout their lives!
They currently have open spots in the Sunday Arduino sessions, starting next Sunday, September 29th at 11 am, and are looking for more students to join their program!

Added Safety Measures
Dear, CECHS students and families,
VERY IMPORTANT! As an extra safety measure, alarm bars have been installed on all exterior doors on the John Hay Campus. From 7:30am until 2:59pm, students can enter and exit ONLY via Stokes Blvd. At dismissal, all main stairwell doors will be unarmed (PNC and Carnegie doors), allowing students to exit the building as they normally do. Please note that ALL custodial drive doors will ALWAYS be off limits, and should never be used, unless there is an actual emergency, of course.
In addition, with a firm starting date of October 21st, John Hay Early College will not allow parents/visitors in the building without and ID. This is a district policy that we plan to uphold. We recognize that this may cause some frustration because of past practice, so we wanted to provide a few weeks for parents to get into this new routine.
Kind regards,
Mrs. Starr
