OTTO PETERSEN ELEMENTARY
Earth Day
On Earth Day, 5th grade kicked off their new service project of the beautification of Otto Petersen's courtyard entryway. Students planted summer and fall blooming bulbs as well as other plants. This project will be ongoing as we are working with Means Nursery to start a pollinator garden. Future plans include a succulent/rock garden and the general upkeep of the area. Our 5th graders are excited to serve our school community!

Author Visit
This week, we welcomed acclaimed author and illustrator, Vera Brosgol, to OPE! She shared her story of immigrating to the U.S. as a refugee from the former Soviet Union, her early interest in cartooning, and her 10 years working for Laika studios. Vera shared excerpts from each of her books and gave our students a sneak peek of her upcoming graphic novel, Plain Jane and the Mermaid. She was a wonderful presenter and our students were an excellent audience. A huge thank you to our families for supporting our parent organization, The OPPO, as they have provided the funding for these special events.
Bring on the Book Joy!
THIS WEEK IN THE LIBRARY!: This week was Book Fair preview week! We watched book trailers and got our flyers! Next week we will shop until we drop to support our library!

Book Fair shopping will be during Library classes on Tuesday and Wednesday, lunch on Thursday and Friday and after school on Wednesday until 6pm! Hope to see you at the fair!
PLEASE PARDON THE MESS!: Over the next couple of months you might notice our libraries getting a little messy as I work on closing down the Warren library. In the process of emptying the Warren library, I need to make room for many of those books at both OPE and Grant Watts. As I do this, please watch for Free Book Carts in the buildings–while some books have lived a full life on our shelves, their circulation is low (if at all), but they still have great stories and information to share so please take them home and share them with your families and then pass them along to someone else to enjoy. (Please make sure that you preview books to make sure the content and reading level are appropriate for your family)
In addition to making room for the books to transition between schools, all of the books will have to be re-catalogued in the system (and many re-labeled) and this will take me several weeks, possibly months, to complete. So, please pardon the mess of boxes and stacks as I work diligently to complete this HUGE task. I will be reaching out for volunteers along the way, so thank you in advance for your help in lightening the load! I appreciate you.
THANK YOU!: We have had many fines paid and books found after this last wave of notices–THANK YOU for your help in getting books back on the shelves for our students to enjoy. Keep up the good work!
Happy National School Library Month ~ Mrs. Nudo
Attendance Reminders & After School Change of Plans
Also, if you have to change your students' after-school plans, please try to do this one hour before students are released so that we have enough time to communicate with teachers and staff.

Personal Electronic Device Policy
(Cell phones, Smart watches, Earbuds)
As an upper elementary school, O.P.E. will align with the Middle School policy concerning electronic devices. A personal electronic device is defined by the district as any “device capable of electronically communicating, sending, receiving, storing, recording, reproducing and/or displaying information and data.” The new policy will ask that students have their devices “off and away” while on campus. A private warning will be given if a student uses the device while at school. A second infraction will lead to the device being turned into the office for pick-up at the end of the day. Parents will be asked to pick up the device after a third infraction. The school is asking for parent support with this policy as we focus on building a positive learning environment. Here is the testing schedule for the rest of May.
