OMS The Middle Matters
November 15, 2024
Inspiring Excellence. Every Learner. Every day.
Hello OMS Families,
November is flying by quickly and we are fast approaching the holiday season. It's the time of year for concerts, celebrations, and several long breaks to look forward to.
Thank you to all of you who joined us for fall conferences. We hope you had the chance to connect with your student's teachers. If you missed conferences or missed seeing a specific teacher, please be sure to reach out to that teacher directly to check in on your student's progress.
Over the next few weeks, please check in with your student regularly about their PAW score. PAW scores reflect student behavior in several key areas- being prepared for school, using appropriate behavior and language, and following through on their academic work. Good PAW scores are the ticket to join all the fun on Husky PRIDE Day coming up on December 20. Our goal is for all students to join a fun field trip or activity of their choice on this special day.
Even as the weather get colder, we still go outside for movement breaks during your student's lunch period. Please remind your students to bring sweatshirts or light jackets with them to lunch and dress for the weather! We are getting to the point in the year when t-shirts and shorts are no longer appropriate attire for recess due to the cold temperature.

Pick Up & Drop Off Procedures
Winter weather is coming, which can make our morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up even more stressful. Please review this map and follow the guidelines to allow traffic to flow smoothly and get everyone in and out promptly.
There is absolutely NO dropping off or picking up on 15th Street when buses are present.
If you are entering the parking lot from the South, please enter the right lane. This way, people entering from the North can enter the left lane at the same time. Changing lanes can happen once you are in the parking lot to keep traffic flowing on the street. Please move to the right-hand lane to drop off your student. There is a sidewalk surrounding the entire parking lot. You should drive as far forward (yes, past the entrance) as possible to drop off your student. If it will take longer to drop off your student, please pull into a parking space instead of using the drop-off lane. Please only turn right when exiting the parking lot. This is essential to keeping traffic moving. Waiting to turn left backs up the entire parking lot. These backups spill over into the streets.
Remember, we are all trying to get our kids to school safely and on time. We all have our own destinations to get to afterward. Be courteous and follow the rules!
United Way Fundraiser - Last Day to Donate Monday, Nov 18th
The United Way of Steele County is the middle of its annual fundraiser. Every year, this organization supports over 18,000 residents in Steele County. Many of these residents are students and the families of students at Owatonna Public Schools. So, this year, OMS wants to help the United Way reach its fundraising goal!
To do so, OMS is in the middle of the an epic Dodgeball Fundraiser. Over 20 staff members have volunteered to participate in a game of dodgeball against students. Each of these staff members has a jar with their name on it. Students can vote for which staff members they want to see play dodgeball by putting money into that staff member's jar. The eight staff members who collect the most money will make the dodgeball team. As an added bonus, the staff member who collects the most money will also have to wear an inflatable dinosaur costume while they play dodgeball!
Of course, we need a student team to compete against the staff team! For every $5 a student donates to the staff members' jars, they have their name entered into the drawing that will determine the eight memebers of the student dodgeball team. (Please note students who don't want to play dodgeball can still donate to this fundraiser.)
If OMS can raise $3000, then its very own eighth grade social studies teacher Mrs. Hunst will show her school pride by dying her her Husky Blue!
The last day of our fundraiser is Monday, November 18th. We still have a long way to go to reach our $3000, but we can do it! Remember, all money collected from this fundraiser will go directly to the United Way. If your family is able and would like to help, please send money to school with your student on Monday and remind them to donate during their lunch!

Husky Pride Day - December 20th
On December 20, 2024 we will have our first Husky Pride Day of the year. HPD is a time to celebrate the positive behavior and culture fostered by our OMS students and staff. Students will have the option to participate in school activities or attend off-site field trips. Some of these events are free, while others (primarily field trips) may require a participation fee. Students will use Infinite Campus to sign up for their preferred activities and pay any necessary fees.
The Husky Pride team, with support and input from staff, has developed a set of behavioral expectations linked to our P-A-W scores. An average of all P-A-W scores from Quarter 1 and Quarter 3 will determine the qualifications for participation.
When it is time to sign up, to get an accurate count of participation in activities, we ask that students who will NOT be attending Husky Pride Day sign up for the group "Not Attending HPD."
We believe that Husky Pride Day is a valuable enrichment experience and a reward for our students. We look forward to your child's participation.
Click here for more detailed information about HPD.
Pay Fees in Infinite Campus 12/9-12/12
If your student chooses to go on a field trip or an activity with a fee, you will need to pay that fee in Infinite Campus. This fee will become available to pay on Dec 9th and the ability to pay will close on Dec 12th. If payment is not made by Dec 12th your student will have to choose a different activity. Please look through the list of activities with your student so you can help them decide a suitable option when the time comes.
Upcoming: Activity Night - Dec 13th
Orchestra Ornament Decorating Party - Dec 13th
Orchestra Ornament decorating party will be on Friday, December 13th from 2:30 - 3:30 in the cafeteria.

Pick Up & Drop Off
Parent/Guardian pick up and drop off happens at Door 13 via the staff parking lot. 15th Street is for bus parking ONLY. When you arrive to drop off your student in the morning, please pull all the way around to the furthest available space near the parking lot exit. Students can walk along the sidewalk safely to enter the building. This allows all the cars behind you to pull forward and avoid backing up in the street. When everyone stops directly in front of the door to drop off their student(s) we are blocking traffic along the road for all other vehicles.
The same process is helpful during pickup time at the end of the day. Please pull all the way around to the parking lot exit to wait. You may fill in any parking spots that are unused in the lot as well. If we all pull around and avoid waiting directly in front of the doors, the process will go much more smoothly for everyone.
Students will not be admitted into the building in the morning until the doors open at 7:35 am.
Students must be picked up by 2:30.
Chromebooks
Every student must bring their Chromebook to school every day, fully charged. This does affect students' PAW scores under Work Habits! Teachers will be using these on a daily basis; it is crucial your child brings their computer to school every day!
Having troubles with your Chromebook?
Please call the Parent/Student Technology Hotline: 507-444-8630
"AWAY FOR THE DAY"
Cell phones are "AWAY FOR THE DAY". No cellphone usage is allowed between 7:50-2:20 pm. Phones must be put away in lockers and not on their persons.
From the Parent & Student Handbook:
If a device or cell phone is seen and taken by an adult during the day, it will be turned into the office. For the first infraction, a parent must pick up the phone at the end of the day. For a second infraction, a parent/guardian will be required to pick up the phone or device from school and additional consequences may be assigned including but not limited to a Suite 360 lesson and detention. Any student who incurs three phone infractions will be required to check his/her phone into the office at the beginning of every day; the student may pick up the phone at the end of the day.
Visitors
All visitors must enter through Door #1 on 15th St NE. All visitors must have a scheduled appointment or be here under special circumstances. You will need to present a valid ID in order to enter. Please let our Campus Greeter know who your meeting is with and she will call them down to the vestibule to escort you to and from your meeting.
Preventing Class Disruptions
Learning is taken very seriously at OMS; therefore, we try to keep classroom interruptions to a minimum:
- Please do not bring or arrange deliveries of bouquets, balloons, stuffed animals and the like to students. They will not be accepted.
- Encourage students to remember their Chromebooks, lunches, gym clothes, musical instruments, etc. We do not have staff to deliver these items, nor do we call the classrooms to have students come down and pick up the items.
- Make afterschool arrangements with your student before school, if possible. We do not interrupt classrooms for these types of messages.
