Weekly Message
Dear Raleigh Hills Community,
I hope that you have found some safe and socially distant ways to enjoy the summer. This edition of the newsletter will focus on information you need for the next few weeks as we begin the 2020-2021 school year - a year we will all remember forever.
As you know, we will begin the school year in Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL). The current projection has us in CDL until November 16th, at which point we will return in a hybrid model. However, our return will depend on our county and state meeting the outlined health metrics as determined by the Oregon Health Authority. Click here to read more about that. And remember, that even if the students return to a hybrid model, you can continue with distance learning for the entire year if you choose.
Here are some of the most important items you need to know for the next few weeks:
1. Parent engagement and partnership: The success of our students is more dependent on our school-home partnership than ever before. I want to ask all of you to set aside time during the weeks of September 7-18 to really engage with us and with your student. We need 150% from you those initial weeks to support your student in learning to be an online student, as well as the Family Toolkit website that will teach you the tools you need to navigate CDL at home. The Toolkit website will go live on September 1st and will include learning sessions to teach you what you need to know to launch your year at home. The more you can learn and engage those two weeks, the better the entire school year will be. This is the week where our entire Beaverton Community is engaging in learning for CDL.
2. Family Toolkit Website: The district and Raleigh Hills will be creating parent learning sessions to help you learn Canvas, Seesaw, ParentVue, and other necessary tools to help you be informed and better able to support your student.
3. Panther Week: We normally have supply drop off day, but we can't do that this year. So, we will have Panther Week on September 8-10. Those days will outline times for students and families to come to school (outside only) to turn in broken chromebooks, check out brand new chromebooks if needed, get iPads (K-2), pick up yearbooks from last year, get school pictures (maybe), and make a connection to school and teachers. This will be a drive up/walk up event. More specific details will come in a separate newsletter.
4. Cohorts: The ODE guidelines for cohorts is that they must be heterogeneous and must not disproportionately create groups of same demographic (race, gender, special education, socioeconomics, etc.) The cohorts for transportation are being set by the transportation department. The learning and attendance cohorts are being developed by the district and then balanced at the school level. We have a very minimal ability to change cohorts at the building level. I am asking for parent input with this family survey. This will guide my work. Please know that I will not be able to honor all requests, but I value your input as I set about making decisions for classes and cohorts.
Warm regards,
Jennifer
