CREW Friday Five
April 12, 2024
5+ Updates for this week!
1. A Special Thank you to PTA
Sam Hughes teachers and staff would like to thank the PTA for the fantastic breakfast provided Thursday, April 4th during testing and the wonderful snacks provided for students during testing. In addition, our PTA has provided supplies to our classroom teachers, spearheaded fundraising drives through book fairs, Chuck Wagon, tax credit drives, and an assortment of activities that has made our work at Sam Hughes run much smoother and more efficient. Sam Hughes PTA is awesome.
We want to thank our parents, grandparents, guardians for their support and generosity. You make our school such a great place to be. THANK YOU
2. Visions and Victories PTA Meeting
☀️ SAVE THE DATE: Visions & Victories PTA Meeting - Next Thursday April, 18th @ 6pm in the Library☀️
As the school year winds down, let's gather to celebrate our collective achievements and prepare for the final events on our calendar. Join us for an evening of reflection and forward-thinking.
Agenda Highlights:
- Financial Review: An update on our financial health.
- Year in Review: Celebrate the milestones we’ve achieved together.
- APEX Fun Run: Get ready to cheer on our students and boost our fundraising.

4. Ecology News
Ecology News:
It's birdwatching season for the 3rd-5th graders at our school and we've spotted some of our migrating birds this week! A group of birding third graders spotted the first white-winged doves of the season. We've had a couple of sightings of our barn swallows—the first week of April, just like last year! Hopefully there are still a few craneflies hanging around for them to feast on. We have found active mourning dove, verdin and mockingbird nests but are still trying to find where the vermillion flycatchers have their nests this year. We believe there are at least 2 pairs. Please share if you spot their nests!
5. Summer Plans for Students
New Floors means No Summer School at Sam Hughes
The flooring project for the whole school means, there will be new floor throughout the campus for next fall. But it also means that we will NOT be having summer programs at Sam Hughes this summer. Parents who wish to enroll their child in a traditional summer program at school will need to explore opportunities at nearby schools.
The attached file is a City of Tucson Summer Camp Sports - Activity flyer which offers 1/2 day, Full Day, and additional After Care for children ages are 6-17. These are weekly sessions from May 27th -August 2nd. Not a TUSD sponsored or endorsed program.
APEX in Full Swing
APEX is in full swing and on Friday, April 19th we will be doing our final activity with the FUN RUN.
We definitely need parent volunteers that morning to help with counting laps, providing water and other assorted duties for this activity.
- K - 2nd grade will be running from 8:45-9:45am and
- 3rd - 5th grade will run 10:00 - 11:00am.
As most of you know this is a huge fundraiser for Sam Hughes so keep those pledges coming in!
Interested in Code of Conduct - have your chance for input
Wednesday, April 17th, at 10:00 am, Join Us for an Enlightening Session on the Student Code of Conduct, Dress Code, and More at Our Parent Advisory Council – Either Via Zoom or In Person! At Menlo Family Resource Center, located at 1100 W. Fresno Street, in the cafeteria. See the flyer above for Zoom Meeting ID info.
A message of peace
This week Ms. Nanette Murray used this book in conjunction with information on Eid, Ramadan, Islam, respect, kindness, pay it forward - it works for everything! Harris J is a British musician still recording, but this song and the accompanying children's book are from 2016.
One of the kindergartners wrote a beautiful journal entry about the song. It wasn't an assignment - he just wanted to write this. I asked his mom and I have her permission to share it publicly - so lovely.
Information for adults bringing students to school
Parents, Grandparents, Guardians – please make sure that if you arrive after 8:40am that you check your student in at the office and we will escort them, if necessary, to class. Once school starts parents should not be escorting students to class as this causes disruption to the start of class. In addition, parking on the south side of the school is reserved for staff members – please make sure you are not lingering in this area. There is more space to drop off students on the north side of the playground.

You will find songs and activities for your child there by grade level. Thank you!
Families- we need your help!
CREW we need your help with students getting picked up early at the end of the day. There are many transitions that occur in the last 10-15 minutes of our instructional day and it can be challenging the the front office to make contact with classroom teachers as they are concluding their time with their classes.
If you need to pick up your student early, please make arrangements to come prior to 2:35pm so that we are readily able to call for your student with minimal disruption to the class' end of day procedures.
Thank you in advance for your support and understanding.
Reminders!
Refillable Water Bottles are Needed for Students Each Day
Thank you for sending a refillable water bottle with your student each day. Water fountains are available for students to refill their water bottles as needed. We are encouraging students to stay well hydrated, especially with the temperatures as high as they have been.
Please be sure your student's name is clearly labeled on the bottle, thank you!
PTA Meetings!
Sam Hughes PTA has a new board this year -- with Rose Hagood as President, Raquel Salgado as Vice President, Elizabeth McDonnell as Treasurer and Olivia Alicea as Secretary!
Come to a PTA Meeting!
The Sam Hughes PTA meets about once a month at 6:00 pm in the courtyard or library, depending on weather. It's a great way to meet other parents and stay on top of everything happening at school. Kiddos are welcome to come along! At meetings we plan events and keep everyone up to date on the latest news. Families are encouraged to give feedback and ask questions.
