American Legion Essay Contest
Attention ALL 8th Graders
Every year we join forces with the American Legion to provide an opportunity for our 8th grade students to participate in an essay writing contest. Eventually, two 8th graders receive the American Legion Award. All 8th graders are eligible to participate. All students who complete an essay will receive an honorable mention certificate and the 2 winning students will be invited to participate in the Memorial Day parade.
To apply for this award, students need to write an essay based on the tenets of the American Legion: Courage, Honor, Leadership, Patriotism, Scholarship, and Service. THIS google slide presentation will shown to 8th graders during Social Studies class and THIS google document gives details about the essay contest.
You can reach out to the 8th grade counselor, Mr. Bartman, with any questions about the essay contest.
Quarter 1 Grades/Progress Reports
Hello, Parents/Guardians and IMMS Scholars,
We are excited to share that it is time for our 9-week grade checkpoint/in-progress grades (Quarter 1). Please remember that we view learning as a process and grades are only one indicator of student progress. No matter where your child’s grades may be, we are committed to working with them to help them move to the next level. We know that this will take time and a lot of work. As you and your child look at their grades, a great question for them to ask themselves is, “What do I need to do to move to the next level?” If they aren’t able to answer this question, please encourage them to talk to their teacher. Please read the additional information below prior to reviewing your child’s grades.
Final Grades for 9-week classes:
Art
Family and Consumer Sciences
Futures (8th)
General Music (6th and 7th)
Technology and Engineering
In-Progress Grades (final grades at the end of semester 1):
Math
Social Studies
Science
ELA
Physical Education
Spanish/French
Health
C-Gen
Band
Choir
Orchestra
There are three areas assessed for student progress:
Conduct: Reflecting our empathy and respect goals.
Effort : Reflecting achievement and responsibility regarding completed/ missing/ late work as well as effort in participating in class activities and learning.
ELO Standards: These reflect the academic standards (“Essential Learning Outcomes”) for the course.
Student progress is reported using the following scale:
- Extending the standard (ES): My performance extends the standard at this time. I consistently apply and/or extend a thorough understanding of the concept or skill being assessed.
- Meeting the standard (ME): My performance meets the standard at this time. I consistently demonstrate an understanding of the concept or skill being assessed.
- Approaching the standard (AP): My performance is approaching standard at this time. I demonstrate a basic understanding of the concept or skill being assessed. I may need more time to practice before becoming independent.
- Significantly below the standard (SB): My performance is significantly below standard at this time. I demonstrate a limited understanding and/or misunderstanding of the concept or skill being assessed. My performance indicates significant gaps in understanding that are needed to meet the grade level standard at this time. I need more time and support before becoming independent.
- Not enough evidence (NE): I have not yet provided enough evidence of understanding at this time.
- Not Assessed or Blank (NA): The standard is not assessed at this time.
Grade Reporting Clarification
Not Assessed (NA): This standard is not being assessed at this time.
Conduct and Effort Grades: Students should aim for a grade of "ME" (Meeting Expectations). If your child is not meeting these standards, please discuss with them and their teachers about ways to improve.
In-Progress Grades: "AP" (Approaching Proficiency) is common and indicates students are still growing. Encourage your child to check in with their teacher to stay on track to earn "ME" by the end of the semester.
"SB" (Significant Below): This grade suggests your child should meet with the teacher to create a plan for improvement.
Final Grades: The goal for 9-week courses is to reach "ME."
"ES" (Exceeding Standards): You should not expect to see "ES" in such a short time frame, as there have been limited opportunities to demonstrate extended learning.
ELOs (Essential Learning Outcomes): Not all are assessed every term. Unassessed ELOs will either be left blank or marked as "NA" (Not Assessed).
If you have questions about your child’s grades, please contact their teacher directly.

Outdoor Recess and Weather
As the weather continues to cool down and the seasons change, we wanted to provide a few reminders that we will/have been sharing with your scholar:
- Students should take their coats/sweatshirts/hats with them to lunch to avoid having to have to go to their locker/backpacks after being dismissed from lunch to recess
- To allow students the chance to eat at their own pace, there are two waves of dismissal from lunches. The first wave of dismissal happens 15 minutes into lunch (for those who are finished and want to get outside right away). The second wave of dismissal occurs twenty minutes into lunch (lunch/recess is thirty minutes total).
- The expectation is that at this point, all students must go outside for recess. Please continue to encourage this with your scholar

Food Allergies
Does your child have a food allergy? Reminder, if they take hot lunch please visit NutriSlice for menu/ingredient information. Menus are subject to change based on product availability but families will be notified in advance. Please reach out to School Nutrition with any questions.
If your child has a Life Threatening Food Allergy and EpiPen Prescription please send their Epipen to school. This can be kept in the health office or if your student is in grades 6-12, they can self carry it. All prescription medications, including emergency medicine, must have an MD order and Parent Signature, even if self-carrying. Consent forms are required every year and are available here, in the health office and on the District website. An Emergency Health Plan is then created and shared with all staff, including the Kitchen staff. Please reach out to Health Services with questions.
Medical Attendance
Is your student missing school due to illness, injury or health-related appointments? Providing a medical note or appointment card will prevent these types of absences as counting towards your students' allotted 10 days of excused absences for the school year. Please reach out to School Nurse, Lauren Neesam at NeesamL@mcfsd.org or immsattendance@mcfsd.org if you have additional questions about this process. You can also find more information about absences and attendance in the IMMS parent handbook located on the school website.
District News
School and District Report Cards
On November 19, DPI issued a District Report Card for our district and for each district in Wisconsin in addition to a School Report Card for each school. As a District we “Exceed Expectations” and Waubesa Intermediate School, Indian Mound Middle School, and McFarland High School school each earned a rating of “Exceeds Expectations” this year as well. Conrad Elvehjem Primary School received a rating of “Satisfactory Progress” under alternate accountability, because grades EC-2 do not participate in state testing.
All report cards are available online at http://dpi.wi.gov/accountability/report-cards. Please see this letter for additional information.
