A Message from Mrs. Dupuis and Mr. Krause
What a great first two weeks we have had here at Spring Trail. So many smiling faces and children who are eager to learn! We can't wait to see what they accomplish this year.
It's important to note that our grading policy has changed this year. Teachers will be submitting Formative and Summative assessments in Infinite Campus weekly. Please take some time to visit the Teaching and Learning page for more detailed information regarding our curriculum and instruction practices, clarity model, learning benchmarks, and much more. Additionally, you will be able to access further details below regarding our grading policies. If you have questions regarding our policies, please reach out to Mrs. Dupuis. If you have questions regarding your child's grade, please reach out to the classroom teacher.
Standards Based Learning and Assessment Guidelines
Beginning with the 2024-25 school year, reported grades will be a combination of a student's demonstration of mastery through summative, formative, and intentional practice work.
Final grades posted to a report card will be calculated with the following weights:
- 70% - Summative Assessment Scores: Mid / End of the unit measure of student proficiency. Students have 1 reassessment attempt for each summative assessment in a unit and the reassessment attempt must be completed before the end of the next unit. There may be relearning requirements that must be completed before the reassessment attempt.
- 20% - Formative Assessment Scores: Work that prepares students either in content or in form for the summative assessment. This work must include feedback for students on their results. Formative assessment can be reassessed within the unit but not after the unit summative. Late work will be accepted up until the end of the unit with no penalty.
- 10% - Intentional Practice Scores: Classwork that supports students in learning the content. Teacher feedback on student progress is required for this work. Intentional practice work is not reassessed and late work is accepted up until the end of the unit with no penalty. At the end of the unit (when the end of unit summative is submitted), any unsubmitted work will receive a score of zero.
Assignment categories in Infinite Campus and Canvas will be updated to match these three areas.
During the course of a unit, there will be many different learning opportunities. Not all learning opportunities will be recorded in the gradebook. Of the work recorded in the gradebook, there will likely be more practice assignments than formative assessments. Summative assignments will be limited to a few culminating assessments or projects.
Given the expanded categories, grades will be entered more frequently. While assignments and grades may be present in Canvas, students and families should use Infinite Campus to view assignment scores and in-progress grades.
Visit the Student Progress Reports and Report Cards page linked here for report card details and timelines.
Levels of Performance/Mastery
In alignment with our SBLA guiding principles, all work (practice, formative, summative) that impacts the final grade must have the ability to earn a 4. For intentional practice work, this will likely mean providing feedback on mastery against the learning target and/or success criteria for the day. For formative work, feedback might communicate progress on one standard, a component of a standard, a learning target, or a combination of these. For summative work, this would be feedback on the mastery of the content of the entire unit. Students should be aware of what is required to demonstrate mastery at each level prior to engaging in any work that will impact their final grade.
Important Points to Remember
- Students and families should monitor grades in Infinite Campus to understand progress.
- Scores in Infinite Campus should be entered as 0 - 4 and those scores align with the above table.
- Students should be aware of when the end of the unit is approaching so they can ensure they have submitted all of their work and completed any reassessments.
Late Arrival/Early Dismissal
As you've seen at the top of the newsletter and through messages district wide, we are putting a strong emphasis on attendance and tardiness. Our school day begins at 8:30 with instruction in the classroom, therefore, if a student enters the building at that time they are already missing something in their classroom. That being said, it is extremely important your child arrives on time to school. Our doors open at 8am for breakfast and 8:25am to head to classrooms.
If your child enters the building after 8:30am, we will need a guardian or parent to sign them in. You can come into the office and enter your childs name on our purple sign in/out sheet. We will need you to enter in the reason your student is late on this document.
If your child is leaving school early, a parent or guardian must sign them out on the purple sheet. We will need families to include the reason the child is leaving early.
Here are a few articles on the importance of school attendance.
Four Strategies to Increase Student Attendance Through Personalized Family Messaging
Family Engagement: Authentically Integrating Essential Competencies
myON Summer Reading Challenge and Assembly
This summer Spring Trail engaged in a Summer Reading Challenge with Liberty. We sent out several videos to our students and families over the course of the summer encouraging students to read. Our students certainly did not disappoint, reading over 10,000 minutes! We were able to celebrate and recognize our readers at our assembly this week! Students who read this summer were awarded FIVE PAW Bucks. The two top readers in each grade level were given a certificate, participated in creating an Administrator Sundae, and were awarded a Culver's Ice Cream coupon!
Congratulations to all of our participants and winners!!! We look forward to engaging in more fun over the course of the school year by reading on myON!

All School Assemlby
Caption Coral, Finley the Fish, Shelly the Turtle, and Snappy the Crab visited the school this week to talk about Kindness and what it means to be an Upstander. A huge shout out to Mr. Krause for writing a skit with such a powerful message to our students. I'd also like to thank Miss Giannelli and Miss Kowalski for having star roles in the skit! I think it is safe to say the kids had fun while learning an important message about how we act at Spring Trail.

Teacher Shout Outs
Earlier this week, Mr. Krause and I received a message from Mrs. Harrison, one of our second grade parents. She wanted us to know that her daughter, Khloe conquered her fear of public speaking in Mrs. VanLaningham's class. Mrs. Harrison noted Mrs. VanLaningham worked with her and was able to get her over this fear to present in the classroom. Mrs. Harrison stated she is "so thankful for our staff".

Learning Genie = Kindergarten Report Cards
Dear U-46 Parents and Guardians of Preschool and Kindergarten Students,
School District U-46 offers an educational tool called Learning Genie to the families of our preschool and kindergarten students. Learning Genie is where you will view your preschooler or kindergartner's progress report. It also allows you and your child’s teacher to communicate. It offers translation into more than 100 languages. And last but not least, Learning Genie offers resources to support your child's academic progress.
To get started with Learning Genie, please look for an email from support@learning-genie.com sent to you earlier today, Tuesday, Aug. 20. (The message was sent to the primary email you have listed in Infinite Campus.) The email has instructions on how to download the Learning Genie for Parents app and create your family’s account.
If you already created an account, that’s great - you got an early start! If you haven’t set up an account yet, please look for that email in your inbox and follow the instructions.
If you can’t find the invite from Learning Genie, or deleted it, that’s OK! You can contact Learning Genie at 760-576-4822 or email help@learning-genie.com to get started, or if you run into any problems when creating your account.
We’re excited about the opportunities offered by Learning Genie to help keep the parents of our youngest learners connected and engaged with their classrooms and teachers. More information can be found on the Early Learners’ website here.
Please reach out to our department with any questions or concerns via Let’s Talk.
Sincerely,
Katie Cox
