Weekly Inspiration
Be Curious, Not Judgemental (as Ted Lasso and Coach Kelly Sheffield say)
As the semester and school year wind down, don't forget to continue to be curious about your students. We still have time to get to know our students better as both people and as learners. Use these last few weeks of PD to continue to adjust the work you're doing and increase your positive impact on students. While there is often internal pressure to push to cover all of the remaining standards, don't forget that you still have time to learn about your students and their goals so you can help support them in their journey as well. Keep asking questions!
Dont forget to extend these ideas and practices to your colleagues as well. At times, teaching can feel lonely and isolating so don't forget to ask each other questions and support each other to a strong finish.
Together, let's strive for greatness!

Being a teacher is not just a profession or WHAT you do - it's a calling that requires passion, dedication, empathy, and a commitment to making a positive impace on the lives of others. So the next time someone asks you what do you do, please tell them truth and don't sell yourselves short.
Thank you for all that you do for our students, staff, community, and each other!

Jessi Walpole - SHS Dance Team
The SHS Dance Team participated in the SCAU state competition over spring break. All of the routines placed earning them all an opportunity to compete at Nationals! Below are the results from the state competition:
Jazz: 3rd Place
Pom: 4th Pace
Hip Hop: 3rd Place

Brantley Heath & Jeff Maupin - Indoor Percussion
The SHS Indoor Percussion Ensemble shared their performance during a community night this week. The students performed "Southport Diner - How to build a cheeseburger", playing songs from Meatloaf, the Burger King theme song, and Cheeseburger in Paradise. The group had a great season and competed at the State Finals at Indiana State this weekend. Thank you to Mr. Heath and Mr. Maupin for all of their dedication to our band programs.
Julie Fierce - UIndy Summer Camp
Julie Fierce coordinated having Rebecca Franks from the University of Indianapolis at SHS this week to share the UIndy summer camp opportunity to select students and their parents. For one week in the summer, students are able to spend the week on UIndy's campus, eat all meals in the dining hall, stay in the dorms, attend classes, participate in campus and community activities, and earn $200. We are excited for our students to participate in this great program.
Jaclyn Richardson
Mrs. Richardson's Vocal Jazz choir was rehearsing for their upcoming spring concert. The group was singing “Bridge over Troubled Waters” while Mrs. Richardson accompanied the group on the piano. It's amazing to watch her give feedback while she continues to play the piano - the ultimate multi-tasking!
John McBurney
In his applied music (guitar) class, Mr. McBurney had the students walk across the front of the room while playing different chords. While the students walk past him, Mr. McBurney gives students individualized feedback. He uses this as a check for understanding that allows him to correct mistakes in the moment.
Jamie Marshall - LAMP Visit
Jamie Marshall and the SHS LAMP (Latino Advocacy and Mentorship Program) mentors hosted their SMS mentees this past week. The SMS students were able to get tours of the building and learned how to get their lunch from the SHS cafeteria. The SHS mentors did a great job leading the ice breaker activity and answering the numerous questions that came up during the building tours.
Jeff Maupin - SHS Jazz Band
Mr. Maupin and the SHS jazz band performed a side by side concert at the University of Indianapolis this week. Students were able to perform alongside college musicians and obtain feedback from college professors.
Michelle Westerhouse
Michelle Westerhouse's English 9 foundational literacy students visited first grade students at Clinton Young Elementary School. The SHS students read children's stories to CY students and some of the first graders read their favorite stories back to our students as well. It was a great experience and it was wonderful to see the students excited about reading. Miss Westerhouse's students will be going back at least one more time this semester.
