Heritage Monthly Newsletter
September 2024
Dear Heritage Families,
As the crisp autumn breeze begins to settle in, we're thrilled to welcome you back to another exciting month at Heritage! September is a time of new beginnings and fresh opportunities, and we're eager to dive into a month filled with learning, growth, and fun. Our students are settling into their classrooms, and our dedicated teachers are ready to inspire and engage with creative lessons and activities. This month, we'll be focusing on our Pride Trait-Decision Making, MAP testing, and smiling big on picture day. We encourage you to stay connected and involved in our school community. There are activities and events below for everyone to enjoy. Here's to a fantastic start to the school year—let's make September a month to remember!

Notes From the Office
Please remember that if you are dropping your student off later than 7:30 am, you must walk them to one of the offices and sign them in.
You are encouraged to pay school fees each school year for your student. Payments can be made online using https://payschoolscentral.com/ or you can bring a check made payable to “Avon Board of Education” in an envelope marked “student fees” and turn it in to the Heritage office.
Students who have unpaid school fees will not be permitted to attend field trips.
Please remember to add your child's last name to any notes that need to be sent to the school offices. While their homeroom teacher may have only one student by that name in their classroom, we have many students with the same first name throughout Heritage school.
Did you know we have two school offices at Heritage? We have one on the southside of our building, off of Bentley Drive and one on the northside of our building off of Detroit Road. If your child is in 3rd grade the south office is your best choice for picking up your child or dropping items off because all of our 3rd grade classrooms are on the southside of Heritage. This will eliminate them having to walk through the entire building to their classrooms. The opposite can be said for our 5th graders. All of our 5th grade homerooms are housed on the northside of Heritage, so picking up students and dropping off items will be better served at our north office. 4th graders have the luxury of using any office because they are housed in the middle of our building, either office will work for all your 4th grade needs.
School Safety
School safety is in the front of everyone's mind and always a priority for us at Heritage. Along with keeping our exterior doors locked at all times we also have several procedures below that help with student safety.
Sign-Out
To ensure the safety and security of our students at Heritage Elementary we ask that if you are picking your child up early from school, you bring your identification card to the office when signing your child out. Our office staff will ask you to identify yourself and hold your ID card up to the window for verification. This will help us ensure you are a safe adult for one of our children. While we understand this procedure can be frustrating, especially if you have to go back to your car for your identification, we are doing this to keep everyone safe and secure. Thank you in advance for cooperating with this very important procedure.
Dropping Off Items
To promote safety, we will be limiting guests entering our Main Office areas. Therefore, parents needing to drop off items at the school will be doing so within the double door vestibule areas, where a table will be set up to leave the marked item(s) example: lunchbox. This table will also have a sign-in area if your child were to arrive late due to a given reason. Guests can always push the buzzer to ask questions with the office personnel.
Student Illness During the School Day
In the event your child is sick, the office and/or nurse will contact you directly. Teachers are busy instructing our students and are unable to answer any type of communication about sickness during the day. We also ask that students do not email or text their parents during our school day to report illness. All communication must go through the office in order for us to know who we are expecting and when.
Safety Drills
In these first few days of school we have already practiced some safety drills and have more planned as the year progresses. All of our students have talked about safety within their classrooms, going over and practicing fire, tornado and lockdown procedures. Along with classroom talks, we had our first fire drill the first week of school, and have various drills planned for each month this year to help our staff and students be prepared in case of any emergency.
Heritage Arrival and Dismissal Procedures
As mentioned previously, the North Parking Lot (Detroit Rd.) will ONLY be used for students who are transported by bus and the South Parking Lot (Bentley Dr.) will ONLY be used for students designated as car-riders. This change has been made in accordance with directives from the City of Avon safety forces. The small loop off Bentley Dr. will not be used for drop-off and pick-up as we need to maintain an open space to the access road for any first responders. If your child is a car rider, we ask that you pull all the way around the circle and do not stop in front of the door. This will help to make our pick-ups run more smoothly and efficiently. Please watch our video of dismissal on our website.
MAP Testing
Next students will be taking their MAP fall benchmark. We take the MAP assessments three times a year to gauge your child's progress in reading and math. Specific testing dates will be announced by your child's teacher(s). Once the MAP window is closed in the coming weeks, and all testing is completed, you will receive a report of their results.
In order to prepare for MAP testing, please make sure your child's Chromebook is charged for school, they have a nutritious breakfast and a good night's sleep. We want to ensure they are in their best form to show how much they have learned throughout the school year.

Mrs. Lee
Welcome back Eagles, my name is Mrs. Lee! Mrs. Ryan and I are the Art Teachers here at Heritage. This year I will be teaching all the 5th grade classes and the following 4th grade classes: Mauser, Maslinski, Anderson, Suter, James, Barrett, Bendzuck and Roggenburk. Mrs.Ryan and I also work together at the ELC, so we might have some of your younger siblings for Kindergarten. I have been teaching in Avon since 2017 and feel very blessed to call myself and Eagle. I have two little girls at home, Frankie (who is a 2nd grader at EAST) and Izzy (who will be starting Kindergarten at the ELC next school year). I love anything art, but my favorite medium is Clay!
I am very excited for this school year and can't wait to get started. Art has already gotten off to a great start with the first days, "getting to know you/team building" sculpture activity. During this class each team is asked to work together to create a theme/sculpture using Jenga blocks, Lego and domino bricks. It has been amazing to see the teamwork and creativity that has taken place in my room. I have seen sculptures of baseball fields, jet runways, beaches, racetracks, cities, villages and the list goes on and on. Our first project this year will be a clay project! In the upcoming weeks we will begin our concept drawings to brainstorm ideas of what it is we are sculpting.
I hope everyone has enjoyed their first couple weeks back at school.
Mrs. Ryan
Welcome back, Eagles!! I am so excited to be back in the Heritage South art room this school year! It's great to see all of the familiar faces in 4th grade, as well as so many new 3rd graders to meet! We are starting out with some get-know-me lessons before heading into more art projects. We also have been reviewing classroom expectations and hearing about one another's summer. In the coming weeks, 3rd grade will be making self-portraits while 4th grade will be starting "Notans". I am so blessed to get to share this special art time with each of your children. Thanks for sharing them with me!
Mrs. Bryant
Music at Heritage is full of joy; so many smiles in the classroom. So far, we’ve entered the room in a conga line, learned a mixer, and got to know Mrs. Bryant. Moving forward, 4th graders will begin preparing for their October concert. And 3rd graders will continue to learn and grow new musical skills.
Save the Date
4th grade concert: Monday, October 21st
3rd grade concert: Monday, December 16th
Mr. Moellman
All 5th grade music students have gone over Mr. Moellman’s Equation for Participation: Attitude + Energy + Enthusiasm + Focus = Participation. The kids are nailing it so far! Preparation for our 11/11 Veteran’s Day Concert is underway. 7pm in the PAC. More details to come soon.

SOAR Like an Eagle
Say It ● Own It ● Act It ● Respect It
Our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) Program is up and running! Our students are earning Eagle Bucks when they are showing appropriate behavior in all areas of the school (classroom, lunch, recess, hallways, specials, on the bus...everywhere!). This year we hope to continue to bridge home and school with our Nightly PBIS Conversations calendar (shown below) that comes home at the beginning of each month. We encourage you to use these prompts to ask your child about their day, get them to reflect on positive choices, and reinforce our SOAR expectations. Sign off and send it back for a chance to win a prize. Thank you for your support!
Are you interested in helping us cut Eagle Bucks for this school year? If so, please sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050544AFAF2AA6FF2-50924254-eagle#/

Eagle Pride Days
We celebrate our school pride on Eagle Pride Day once a month. On these days, students wear purple and/or gold to show school pride, and are encouraged to bring in $1 to donate to the Heritage Boosters based on a community-service deed they completed to help out around the home/neighborhood to show school pride. We also recognize a student from each homeroom who shows the Eagle Pride Day assets we encourage at Heritage Elementary. Our first Eagle Pride Day will be on Wednesday, September 18th and the asset trait we will be celebrating is Decision Making.
Eagle Pride Day assets and dates for each month are listed below:
- September 18th-Decision Making
- October 16th-Respect
