TCS News to Know
For the Week of October 28, 2024
Dear Families,
Happy Halloween this week! We are so fortunate in our small town to still have a family-friendly community that turns on their porch lights and welcomes trick-or-treaters for some Halloween fun! It is still important, though, that all parents provide supervision for children when they are out walking around town to keep them safe! Trick-or-treating will be available in the Village of Tekonsha on Thursday, 10/31, from 5-7 pm. We will have some treats available in the front of the elementary school if you are out trick-or-treating around town at that time. Be sure to stop by!
The Tekonsha Fire Department will also be offering their annual candy check starting at 5:30!
Elementary Students
All elementary students are encouraged to come in costume at the beginning of the school day on Thursday, 10/31. Please remember that students must wear costumes that are school appropriate, which means no blood, gore, or weapons.
Parents are welcome to stay in the elementary multipurpose room to watch the morning Halloween Costume Parade! We will record this and post on Facebook so that you can enjoy the cuteness even if you aren't able to be here!
Middle School/High School Students
Costumes are allowed for Halloween! Students must wear costumes that are school appropriate, including no blood, gore or weapons. For MS and HS, students must also not wear any masks. If you are not certain if the costume is school appropriate, please leave it at home. Classes will be held as usual for students in grades 6-12, so please make sure that the costume will not inhibit a student's ability to learn.
Have fun and stay safe!
Fall Family Fun Night
On Tuesday, October 22, the Tekonsha Elementary multipurpose room was filled with students, parents, grandparents, and other family members to celebrate our Title I Family Engagement Fall Family Fun Night! Everyone enjoyed hearing the story Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert, then they had the opportunity to create their own leaf man using leaves, sticks, grass, and other supplies found in nature!
Band Showcases Shrek Favorites!
The Tekonsha High School band took to the field during half-time of the last home game held last Saturday, October 26 to showcase a performance of some of the most memorable music from the Shrek movies. One of the songs featured solos by junior Jack Rafferty on trombone and senior Ali Winger on clarinet. They all sounded great!
Watch Us Grow!
Each year, Tekonsha HS Counselor Mrs. Tew finds a way to visually celebrate and acknowledge the college applications that seniors have completed as part of Michigan College Month! This year, she created a "garden" in the high school hallways to see all of the different possibilities that have been planted for the Class of 2025. As students complete and submit a college application, they are provided a flower with the college logo in the center and encouraged to color it and sign it so that it can be added to the garden. We hope this serves as not only an acknowledgement of their hard work, but an inspiration to middle school students and underclassmen of all of the different options available to them when they get ready to graduate!
The Cash Raffle is Back!
Tekonsha High School students will be selling money raffle tickets beginning on Monday, November 4. This fundraiser helps support all classes with their dances and class events. All tickets will be $10 each, and the drawing will be held on December 16, 2024 at 10:30 am in the Tekonsha High School library. Max is Going to State!
Tekonsha High School sophomore Max Barron ran at Cross Country Regionals on Friday, Oct. 25 and finished 13th with a time of 18:21! He will now move on to compete at the MHSAA State Cross Country meet next weekend held at the Michigan International Speedway! It's an impressive feat to qualify for the state meet, but even more so as this is Max's second year in a row to qualify! Last year, Max competed and finished 170th. We can't wait to see how he does this year! Way to go, Max!!!
FFA National Convention
Two Tekonsha juniors had the opportunity of a lifetime this fall to attend the FFA National Convention. Lena Halbert and Elise Willison traveled to Indianapolis, IN for the event from October 23-26. Both students are in the Agriscience program at the CACC and are active members of the CACC Chapter of the FFA. They both also stated that one of the most impressive things was seeing so many people in one place!
This was the 97th National FFA Convention, in which members from all of the country travel to meet and celebrate the values and mission of FFA. According to FFA.org, "FFA is the premier youth organization preparing members for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture." The National Convention included a national meeting, contests, and an expo filled with colleges and vendors representing products and career opportunities within the ag industry. They also had the opportunity to listen to influential key note speakers, including Dr. Temple Grandin, a prominent author and speaker on both autism and animal behavior.
MiCareerQuest
Last week, Tekonsha Middle School 8th graders traveled to Kalamazoo on Wednesday, October 23, to attend the MiCareerQuest career exploration experience with other students from all over West Michigan. At this unique event, students rotated through sectors highlighting five high-demand industries: agribusiness, advanced manufacturing, construction, health sciences and information technology. Students engaged with professionals and participated in hands-on activities that showcased various high-growth occupations in Michigan. We want our students to learn early about the great career opportunities available to them that represent varied interests and educational paths! This program was made possible through the CISD.
Fall Festival Donations
The Elementary Fall Festival is one of the most successful fundraisers for the Tekonsha PTO. Funds raised by the PTO go toward paying for class field trips, prizes for Tekonsha Bucks, special programs and prizes for March is Reading Month, and more! One way that the event can be so successful is through the generous donations received in advance for the Silent Auction and BINGO game, as well as baked goods donated the day before the event for the cake walk! This is a great way to help out the PTO and support our students!
This year, the Fall Festival will be held on Friday, November 15. That seems like a long way away, but the PTO is collecting donations NOW! If you would like to donate a gift basket for the silent auction or even individual items that can be auctioned off or be used for BINGO, all items are appreciated! All items can be dropped off at the Tekonsha Elementary School or you can contact Heather Mack at 517-767-4121 ext. 300 or mackh@tekonsha.k12.mi.us for more information!
Student Congrats!
Congratulations to our Tekonsha Elementary School ACTIVE LEARNER Indians of the Week for the week of October 21-25!
