District Nurse Updates-
Free Health Care Services
Here is an annual reminder that there are FREE health care services available to anyone under 21 through U of M Regional Alliance for Healthy Schools clinics in our area.
These clinics are school based, but you don’t have to attend the school to go to the clinic. Anyone under 21 can receive services and they are open year-round.
An appointment is required; they provide physicals, sick visits, nutrition, immunizations, individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, substance abuse programming, family resources, and connect with vision and dental services, etc etc etc
We have visited the clinics and they are amazing! I plan on taking my own son for his sports physical free of charge!
Nurses refer many of our students to the Kearsley clinic and want to make sure you are aware of this resource as well 😊

Food Allergy Awareness
The holiday season from now through the new year poses threats to kids trying to manage food allergies. We would like to increase awareness about food allergies by reminding students and parents of the following:
- Food allergies are very serious. It is not a joking matter.
- Reactions can be life threatening
- Preventing exposure is crucial
- Don’t share food, forks, knives, spoons, or straws with friends
- Wash hands before and after eating. Some people with food allergies can get sick even if they are touched by something that has a tiny bit of food on it
- If a friend with allergies is sick, tell an adult right away. This will make sure that your friend gets help and gets the medicine they need to feel better
- Food allergies can make Halloween even scarier. Please remember not to bring anything with nuts into the classroom
Pertussis (also known as whooping cough)
Pertussis can be a very serious illness and is on the rise in Michigan. The disease is caused by a bacteria that is spread through sneezing and coughing.
- Pertussis can spread easily among susceptible household members and in group settings such as schools, workplaces, and sports teams.
- Adolescents and adults are also at risk for infection since vaccine protection decreases over time.
- The time between exposure to the bacteria and disease symptoms is usually between 7 - 10 days, but in rare cases, it can take up to 3 weeks.
Symptoms:
- In the early stage of illness, pertussis can resemble a common cold. Symptoms include sneezing, runny nose, mild dry cough, and low-grade fever.
- After about 1 to 2 weeks, more serious “coughing spells” develop that can last for more than a minute and result in difficulty breathing.
- At the end of a coughing spell, the cough may make a high-pitched “whooping” sound as they try to catch their breath.
- Sometimes the coughing will cause vomiting. Between spells, they usually feel well.
Recommended actions:
For people of all ages, call your health care provider if you have any of these symptoms:
• Unusual cough lasting 7 days or more (with or without a “whoop”)
• Cough that comes in bursts (intermittent)
• Vomiting after coughing spells
Treatment and Prevention:
- Pertussis can be treated or even prevented with antibiotics if detected early or before the disease has started.
- If you develop any of the symptoms described above, stay home from school and contact your doctor immediately. Please also inform the school office of any illness.
- Antibiotics prevent the spread of disease.
- Antibiotics are recommended for all household contacts of a pertussis case and for other close contacts, regardless of vaccine status.
- Close contacts are people who have had face-to-face exposure within three feet of a pertussis case, or have had direct contact with their respiratory, oral or nasal secretions.
- Close contacts with cold-like symptoms should stay home and be evaluated by their healthcare provider. If pertussis is suspected, they should stay home from school and other activities until completion of 5 days of antibiotics.
- Hand hygiene, cough etiquette, Immunization and boosters are important prevention methods. Contact your Dr. to make sure you are up to date.

Protect Mi Child
Districts across Michigan, like yours, always ask - How can we help our families keep their children safe while online? One resource that is extremely important to make parents aware of is the Michigan Child Protection Registry. This Registry is a do-not-contact service that families can easily and quickly sign up for at www.ProtectMIChild.com in order to keep their children safe while on their devices at school and at home. This is a free Registry offered through the State of Michigan that stops adult advertisements from reaching our kids through e-mail, text, Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Discord, Twitch and TikTok. This Registry is an excellent resource for making sure our kids aren’t being served ads for alcohol, tobacco/vaping, online gambling, pornography or marijuana.
