Principal's Message
Our sophomores and juniors will take the PSAT on October 11 and this is a prime opportunity for parents to have a conversation with students about the benefits of doing your best. In general, our students take most assessments very seriously, however, I want parents to take a moment to encourage them to perform their very best on this assessment. Below are some talking points to help move the conversation forward:
The PSAT will help students:
with exposure to the testing environment and format
build stamina
set goals prior to and after the assessment
boost confidence
be recruited by colleges
As part of our Civinomics unit on civil rights and civil liberties, we have partnered with the Georgia Innocence Project (GIP) to teach our freshmen about the issues surrounding wrongful convictions in the US justice system. All freshmen will participate in a viewing of Ken Burns' documentary The Central Park Five. In the days prior, they will also participate in classroom lessons co-designed with the GIP to further explore the factors that contribute to wrongful conviction. Following the documentary, students will have the opportunity to hear from an exoneree who will tell their story and take questions from students.
Seniors are not required to come to school on October 11th. This should be a perfect time coming off of the Senior College Application Event from 4-7 pm on October 7. They should use this day to work on their post-secondary plans, including college applications and essays. Any seniors who would like to come to DHS on PSAT day are welcome to do so. If a senior elects to come to school, once they check in they must stay all day.
Sincerely,
Duane Sprull. Ed.D.

PSAT Day is October 11
Senior Digital Learning Day For PSAT Day, 10/11
Dear Seniors and Senior Families,
On October 11th, 10th and 11th grade students will take the PSAT and 9th grade students will be participating in a set of activities designed by their civics teachers. Seniors are not required to come to school on October 11th. They should use this day to work on their post-secondary plans, including college applications and essays. We will mark attendance like we do for field trips so that all seniors will be coded as present for the school day. Any seniors who would like to come to DHS on PSAT day are welcome to do so. We will have a space available for them to work, but they must stay in this classroom all day as we prioritize creating a quiet testing environment for our sophomores and juniors.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Activities Around DHS
Advanced Mixed Chorus Field Trip
Last month, our talented singers enjoyed a weekend getaway to Highlands, NC, filled with music and fellowship. They kicked off their trip with a choral exchange with Alpharetta High School, sharing their passion for singing with a new group of students. While in Highlands, they delighted audiences with performances at Highlands Presbyterian Church and an assisted living center. We can't wait to return to the beautiful mountains next year!
DHS Students Spend Fall Break in Spain
79 students and 9 adults spent fall break in the province of Salamanca, Spain. Students visited the medieval towns of Segovia, Salamanca, and La Alberca where they experienced guided tours of a Roman Aqueduct, as well as, romanesque, gothic, and, baroque art and architecture. Students participated in an extra 25 seat hours of Spanish grammar and conversation classes at a local language institute. They took cooking and dance classes, climbed bell towers, ate local cuisine and had dinner. Everyone had fun, learned a lot, and made DHS proud with their representation of our student body.
Decatur Career Academy Welcomes Industry Visitors
Just before fall break, Decatur Career Academy hosted a special event to showcase our innovative CTAE pathways to local industry leaders. Ms. Terra Smiley, Director of the Career Academy, welcomed visitors and guided them on a tour led by our enthusiastic student ambassadors. The tour highlighted the exciting opportunities available to students in our state-of-the-art facilities.
We were thrilled to invite industry members to join our DCA CTAE Advisory Committee. Their valuable insights and expertise will help us continue to provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in their chosen careers.
We look forward to strengthening our partnerships with the community and fostering even more opportunities for our students.

Lighten the Load for CSD Families
DEF's Lighten the Load program began with an elementary school teacher who told us that one of her students dreaded school breaks because he and his siblings counted on having two meals a day at school. Our Lighten the Load program has evolved since then, but we're still committed to helping remove obstacles - like food insecurity - for our kids.
The number of weekend food bags we provide has DOUBLED this year, and we need your help to ensure we're able to continue to meet this need. This is our community, and these are OUR kids. Please consider donating to DEF, or purchasing items from our Lighten the Load wish list today.
