Back to School Checklist
All of your back-school-questions answered (hopefully) in one handy source. Check out our Back-to-School Update page at www.elyriaschools.org.
The page includes details on staggered start for students in kindergarten through ninth grade, as well as start and end times for all grade bands, school supply lists and important links to essential student services.
Free, reduced-price meals
Have you completed a free and reduced-price meal application? You'll find a link to complete this process electronically here through PaySchools Central. It's quick, risk-free and confidential. All families are encouraged to complete the form.
PaySchools Central links right from the district's website, which makes managing your child's meal account easy-peasy! You can check school meal account balances and add funds instantly from the PaySchools Central page.
From the district website, you can also keep up with a our monthly school breakfast and lunch menus. Stay tuned for more on what's new in foodservice this year in coming issues of Pioneer News!
Back-to-school forms
The year is officially underway and your child's back-to-school form must be completed to ensure that we have their essential home and emergency contact information current in our system. You can make quick work of this required process through the parent portal of PowerSchool.
If throughout the year your child's address, phone number or emergency contact information changes, please notify your school's main office as soon as possible so staff members can make the necessary updates.
Text Message Sign Up
One way to ensure you never miss an important announcement from the Elyria City School District is to sign up for instant messaging by text.
The service is free and opting in is easy.
Parents or guardians simply need to send a text message of “Y” or “Yes” to our district's short code number at 67587.
Just as simple, you can opt out at any time by replying to one of our messages with “Stop.”
The text feature and the robocall system are tied directly to a student's contact information so it's crucial to keep this information up-to-date to ensure you continue receiving calls and/or texts from Elyria Schools.
Easy link to Student Code of Conduct
The Student Code of Conduct offers guidance on all matters pertaining to your student's school-climate experience. Please note, clothing must be school appropriate and may not present a health or safety hazard or disrupt the educational environment. Pants and tops must fit properly and be in good repair. Crop tops are not permitted.
Additionally, footwear must be school appropriate--slippers and slipper socks are not permitted. Blankets also may not be worn in school.
Students may bring their cell phones to school but they must be turned off and put away during the day unless they are used as a part of a teacher-directed lesson in class.
Parents may contact their school's main office to reach their student during the school day.
GG&C Bussing to Provide Transportation
The district announced earlier this year a new collaboration in student transportation services with GG&C Bus Company.
The key advantages of this partnership include:
- State-of-the-Art Fleet: GG&C offers a fleet of modern, well-maintained vehicles equipped with cutting-edge safety features and technology.
- Local Expertise: GG&C is dedicated to providing reliable and punctual transportation services to Elyria Schools' students.
- Prominent Identification: Buses operated by GG&C will prominently display Elyria City Schools, making them easily recognizable to students, parents, and staff.
- Community Involvement: GG&C is committed to building positive relationships within the community by actively engaging with parents, students, and school staff to address any concerns or feedback.
"We are enthusiastic about this new partnership with GG&C," stated Brian Kokai, Elyria Schools Operations Director. "Our top priority is always the efficiency and well-being of our students, and GG&C will provide a transportation service aligned with these values. We are looking forward to a successful collaboration with GG&C and offering our students the best transportation experience possible."
Parents can find transportation pick-up/drop-off information under the Transportation tab within the parent portal of PowerSchool. Very soon GG&C will be adding a real-time app that will allow parents to track their student's bus to and from school (FirstView will no longer be used.) More information to come!
Please be aware, requests for conditional transportation will not be reviewed until at least September, once we have determined seating availability for all eligible riders.
For information or questions on bus transportation, please contact the bus garage at 440-284-8030.
Matters of School Safety
The district partners with the Ohio Schools Council (OSC) and the Ohio School Safety Center (OSSC) to ensure that its safety practices and procedures remain up-to-date.
During emergencies, the district adheres to the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) established by the "I Love U Guys" Foundation. This protocol provides a standardized approach for students and staff to follow in the event of a school incident. The district has also acquainted local police and fire authorities with this protocol to ensure clear understanding of the responses and procedures in emergency situations.
Elyria City School District has a longstanding partnership with the Elyria Police Department, Lorain County Sheriff's Office, Elyria Fire Department, and Elyria Township Fire Department.
The district has School Resource Officers from the Elyria Police Department and Lorain County Sheriff's Office, and also employees full-time School Safety Associates.
Elyria Schools is an active participant in the SaferSchools Ohio network. To report any suspicious or potentially harmful activities anonymously, students, staff, parents, or community members can use the SAFEROH tip line at 844-SAFEROH (844-723-3764).
