National Custodian Appreciation Day
Midview West celebrated National Custodian Appreciation Day on October 2nd! We honored our superheroes: head custodian Mrs. Raymond and evening custodians Mrs. Allman and Mrs. Walsh. These dedicated individuals work tirelessly to keep our school beautiful and welcoming for everyone. To show our gratitude, students created a colorful banner filled with their signatures. We're so thankful for our custodial team's hard work in maintaining a clean, safe learning environment. Their behind-the-scenes efforts allow us all to focus on learning and growing.
A big thank you to Mrs. Raymond, Mrs. Allman, and Mrs. Walsh for making Midview West shine!
Candy Corn Science with Mrs. Kaiser's Class
Mrs. Kaiser's class recently embarked on a sweet scientific adventure using candy corn to explore physical science and states of matter. Students conducted a dissolution experiment, predicting and observing how candy corn would react in water, soda, vinegar, and cooking oil. To their surprise, it dissolved in all liquids within an hour, except in cooking oil, sparking curiosity about molecular properties. The class then delved deeper by researching candy corn production, practicing opinion writing about the treat, and using it for hands-on math exercises. This multi-faceted activity integrated science, writing, and math skills while providing an engaging way for students to develop critical thinking and observation skills. Of course, they couldn't resist ending their learning adventure by enjoying some candy corn themselves!
Fire Safety with Eaton Township Fire Department
Our friends from the Eaton Township Fire Department conducted presentations for our North and West Elementary students! Here are some key lessons that were shared:
Emergency Calls: What number to call in case of an emergency (911!) and who responds when that call is made. Students were encouraged to practice placing a phone call on their parents' phones!
Fire Safety Tips:
- Get low and crawl under smoke
- Get out of your house as quickly as possible through a door or low-level window (if trapped, wait by a window).
- Practice navigating multiple exits in your home, especially in the dark
- Know your family's meeting place
- Touch doors before opening them to check for heat
- If clothing catches fire, remember: Stop, Drop, and Roll!
Safety Reminders:
- Never go back in for pets or family members; let the firefighters handle it with their special gear.
- The worst thing to do in a fire is to hide! Call out to firefighters when they arrive.
- Don't touch matches or lighters; tell a grown-up immediately.
A huge thank you to Asst. Chief Blair, Lt. Matt Schutz, Lt. Steven Acord, and firefighter Noah Tanzilli from Eaton Township Fire Department for these valuable lessons!
Third Grade Fall Fest
What a fantastic time we had at our Third Grade Fall Fest! Our students let their creativity shine with pumpkin decorating, while candy corn STEM activities combined learning and play. Families munched on popcorn and sipped cider as kids tried their luck at the lollipop pull. A colorful photo booth area with fall decorations was a big hit, and face painting added extra fall spirit to the festivities. It was great to see our third graders, their siblings, and their families having a blast with their teachers outside the classroom.
A big thank you to our amazing Midview PTA and Pickering Farms for helping make this event possible!
Halloween Fun at West
It's been an exciting couple of days at Midview West! From our costume parade with the other elementary schools to our annual Trunk or Treat last night, along with recognizing our Students of the Month and enjoying classroom parties, Halloween was a real treat. Our staff jumped in and embraced the spirit with creative costumes. A big thank you to all our families for your fantastic participation – you helped make it a magical week for everyone.
Staff Spotlights
Shawn Bristow, Physical Education Teacher
Years in the district: This is my 21st year at Midview!
What excites me most about my job: Working with the students and helping to make a difference and lasting impact on their lives.
Three adjectives students would use to describe me: Nice, fun, and funny.
A few of my favorite things include: I love working out, going on vacations with my family, and cheering on Cleveland sports teams!
What is most important to me in my role: I love that my job is all about connecting with kids, having a blast, getting creative, keeping everyone active, and helping students crush it in their learning adventures.
Lisa Shinko, Technology Teacher
Years in the district:This is my 30th year teaching, and 29 of them have been with Midview!
Reason(s) I chose to pursue my position at Midview Local Schools: After teaching math for 28 years, the opportunity to pursue the Tech Teacher position was presented to me. Technology has definitely become a big part of our classrooms at all levels, so I took the leap! People ask all the time if I am enjoying my new position, and I will continue to share that I am thrilled with the change! I love working with our students & teachers at West!
Some of my hobbies/interests outside of my career: I love filling my free time with exciting activities! Photography captures my heart, while skydiving, ziplining, and roller coasters give me thrills. Walks with my husband Dave and our playful Black Lab, Remi, are always a treat.
Working at Midview Local Schools has taught ME: While teaching over the past 28-29 years at Midview, I have learned resilience and perseverance. I have realized that there are many great people who make Midview what it is today. We have fun while also making sure we're doing what's best for our students.
