PRINCIPAL CORNER
Good evening OSES Family Members,
We had another great week of school. Monday is our picture day for all students in grade K-6. Students must be in uniform to have their portrait taken. Students not in uniform will not be photographed. Photographs are used to create student ID’s and for yearbook purposes. Thank you to PVO for providing volunteers on this day.
While we understand the drop off and pick up process are challenging, the actual school day is running effectively, safely, and is in full swing. At this point, teachers should have completed reviewing rules and expectations, and have started instruction. We hope you can join us for our Curriculum Night this coming week to see what your students classroom looks like and what to expect this school year academically.
Lastly, don’t forget to be respectful to each other. There are many new families at OSES who are still trying to figure out the systems. We have new teachers and students on campus. Lend a helping hand instead of a horn.

In kindergarten we had a fantastic week starting out reading, social studies, math, and science curriculum! Students have been learning about emotions and feelings each day. Ask them about our little spot of emotions songs! In reading we have been learning about school and making friends. In math we have been learning about strategies for addition and subtraction. We look forward to learning so much more this school year!

What a great 2nd week of 1st Grade!
Our first week of school was used to build our classroom community. We enjoyed learning about one another, playing games to build cooperation between each other, and practicing our rules and procedures. The students have already formed such meaningful friendships in and outside of the class!
For this week, we have dived right into the curriculum. Students began the week in Social Studies, learning about how we can get along in school and be a fair sport to one another.
For Reading and Writing, we have practiced identifying the story elements in a story, asked and answered questions that we had about a book, and learned about capitalization, punctuation and nouns!
We started our math unit on addition and subtraction by solving addition word problems involving situations of adding one part to another part. As well as solving problems that involve comparing to find how many more objects are in one group than another group.
In Science, we began our observations of the natural world by describing objects using our five senses. Students were given 5 balloons with different objects inside and had to try and guess what the object was by listening, seeing, touching, and smelling it. They loved this activity!

Hello Families,
In our first week, we introduced each other discussed expectations and classroom rules. They also did activities about themselves and what they wanted to achieve in their second-grade studies. In the second week we reviewed Math lessons such as greater than, less than, equal, odd, even numbers, addition, subtractions, and skip counting. In English Language and Arts, we happily prepared things needed for our activity everyday such as reading notebook; in writing we demonstrate the basic understanding of capitalization and punctuation. In Social Studies, we talked about community and shared what kind of community they live in, and lastly, Science we talked about the scientist, how they work and what the ways scientist works. All in All, it was a great week for us!

My First 2 Weeks Teaching Here in Orcas
Welcome to the new School Year! We are excited to share what’s been happening in our class for the first 2 weeks.
Getting to Know Each Other (1st week): We have enjoyed getting to know each other and establishing our classroom routines. Grade 3 – Advanced class participated in fun icebreakers and team building activities to help them feel comfortable and make new friends.
Learning Time (2nd week): Also, students did interesting activities in Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies that made them excited to learn more. In ELA, we tackled about Literary Elements, Point of View, Parts of Speech, and we read beautiful stories. In Math, we’re reviewing Multiplication and they really enjoyed solving! Our Science focus is on understanding Scientists and their roles. While in Social Studies, we discussed about responsibility and participation using BrainPop.

We have had so much fun over the past two weeks! During our first week of school, we completed several different STEM activities to start thinking outside the book and work on our team-building skills. We came back together to discuss what worked and what didn’t, which was a great transition into our first topic in science, the practice of science. During this first topic, we will be focusing on how to conduct experiments, how to collect data, make observations, and so much more.
In math, we are working on reviewing place value and looking into decimals! It has been a pleasure to see many students participate and help one another. I can’t wait for what this year has in store!

Hello parents and families! Students have been doing a fantastic job jumping right back into school after summer break! The first week of school, students learned about our 5th grade expectations and routines. We also got to learn more about each other through our Brown Bag Biography assignment. We also learned about S.M.A.R.T. Goals, Fixed Mindsets, and Growth Mindsets. Students had the opportunity to warm up their writing skills by answering different journal prompts, some of which included a prompt debating the merits of AI- friend or foe? Students are starting to delve into poetry and have written an Acrostic poem. To prepare them for their first reading project, we stopped by the Media Center to say hi to Mrs. Akin and looked at all the new Sunshine State books! In Social Studies, we have been introduced to Geography and how it impacts History.

Each year the students are offered the opportunity to tell us about their summer adventures, we all love to hear about them! We then began our All About Me artworks. Next week we will begin our firs art project for the year!
Physical Education
Students are back in full swing, smiling, and moving. PE has been practicing locomotor movements with a few SPARK PE activities, and a relay race to showcase their skill. These activities are designed for k-5 to promote spatial awareness, follow classroom rules, while demonstrating locomotor movements.

The Wonders of the World project is the first one of this year and it will be due on September 3. Thank you to all of my students for a wonderful start and I look forward to a wonderful year.
For World Art & Cultures:
In World Art, students drew images to represent themselves as an introduction for the school year. We then reviewed expectations and examined caveman art and aboriginal art and created some.
