B-E-T (Business, Engineering, Technology)
We look forward to the upcoming 4th and final marking period of the year.
English
English 9: Students are wrapping up a unit focusing on propaganda, and working on identifying the techniques used in its creation. The freshmen students will then begin looking at the use of symbolism in literature, while beginning the reading of the novel Night, by Elie Weisel. There will also be a continued focus on utilizing the R.A.C.E.S. strategy for writing constructed responses. Students will continue making progress on their personalized Reading Exact Path.
English 10: Students are continuing in the unit focused on the different types of irony used in literature. The sophomore students will then move into a unit which closely examines symbolism, delving into its relationship with the theme of a story, and the applications of symbolism outside of the English classroom. Students will also be examining numerous reading and writing strategies in preparation for the Keystone Exams. Students will continue making progress on their personalized Reading Exact Path.
English 11: Students are continuing to examine literature from the time period surrounding the Civil War, which includes many realistic stories based upon real events. Some short stories that they will possibly read are “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Pierce and “The Lowest Animal” by Mark Twain.
English 12: Students are continuing to examine the time period known as “The Restoration” and the 18th century. This period includes the well-known piece “A Modest Proposal,” written by Jonathon Swift, with which the students will examine satire and rhetoric. The students will then begin to study the British Romantic period, which includes poetry by such famous British poets as Blake and Keats.
Health & PE
Driver Education
Driver Education students have successfully finished the road signs unit, delving into various types and categories of road signs. Currently, students are embarking on the devices, controls and indicator lights unit. There is an emphasis on learning to set and use their side mirrors properly. Upon completion of the unit, we will begin our “Ready to buy a car” project. The students will go through the entire process of purchasing a vehicle.
Adapted PE
Mr. Sicilia and the Adaptive PE class have dedicated their focus to various motor skills, finding particular success with relay races that have captured the students' enthusiasm. Badminton and basketball have also been enjoyable activities incorporated into the curriculum. Last week, we were thrilled to take the class outdoors, and we're looking forward to more warm weather ahead. Outside we will work on kicking, throwing and catching. The students enjoy soccer, frisbee and football!!!
Physical Education
Spirit Night is just around the corner on March 27th. Students have been diligently practicing for the events during PE class on Wednesdays, and anticipation is building for what promises to be a fantastic night. Please make sure to sign up for activities and buy your spirit day shirt!!! Meanwhile, PE students are starting to venture outdoors. Please ensure they come prepared with appropriate clothing for outdoor activities. Classes will head outside when the temperature is 50 degrees or higher. Additionally, please note that Pacer days are scheduled for Thursdays.
Health and Wellness
In Health and Wellness, students are presently engaged in the CPR unit. The unit allows the students to work at their own pace. Upon completion of the required work, Mr. Bachman will lead all classes in “hands only” CPR and AED training. Shortly, they will commence a sex education unit.
Math
As the end of the third marking period approaches, math classes are still hard at work learning new skills and studying new concepts.
Our Applied Math classes will be starting a unit on housing. In it, they will learn the finer points of renting apartments and purchasing a home. Students in Intro to College Math are taking their knowledge of conditional statements and applying them to the world of advertising in a project that tests both their understanding of logic and their creative senses. Our AP classes are gearing up for the AP exams in May.
As the spring break nears, Algebra 2 classes are wrapping up a unit on exponential growth and decay. Geometry students are studying similar polygons, a great geometric application to utilize problem solving skills developed in Algebra 1. Speaking of Algebra 1, those students are finishing up their unit on factoring polynomials, a skill that will serve them well through every math class they take beyond this year.
See you next month for some special teacher profiles.
Science
The 3rd marking period ends this week.
Social Studies
We look forward to welcoming our students back from their spring break.

Student Spotlight
Signor Gleeson runs our newspaper club and had several students work on an English to Spanish translation so that there were two language versions available for our students and staff. Those students were: Kaylee Reyes, Nayeli Patino, and Ludwin Herrera.
Classroom Corner
Our ELD classes continue to share and celebrate customs from around the world and here at home. They made paper lanterns and wrote special messages in honor of Ramadan. Prior to spring break, they will also host a “find the egg” contest to share a popular tradition in The United States.
Srta. Broggi’s Spanish 3 class had a screen free day to make mini posters about healthy habits highlighting this chapter’s vocabulary and newly learned use of commands.
Sra. Gregory’s Honors Spanish 4 class has been dabbling in Spanish poetry reading poems by several famous poets including José Martí and Pablo Neruda. After reading Neruda’s famous “Oda a los calcetines” (Ode to Socks) they wrote their own “Odas.”
Our Italian classes and other Spanish classes have been working diligently with new verbs and vocabulary in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
