News & Events at Freedom MS - Week of January 21st, 2023

Freedom Families,
The previous week our students have been involved in various activities during and after school hours. After school, students from across the district enthusiastically participated in auditions for the production of "The Little Mermaid" on Monday and Tuesday after school, showcasing their talents and dedication.Freedom hosted two home girls' Allstar volleyball games and an intramural game, contributing to a vibrant and engaging school atmosphere.
Our students were immersed in the second week of ACCESS Testing during the day. Our multilingual learners displayed commendable proficiency in the English language, diligently excelling in the domains of Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing.
Looking ahead, the upcoming week is designated as School Counselors Week, allowing us to express our gratitude for the invaluable contributions of Ms. Anthony, our esteemed FMS counselor. We acknowledge and appreciate the unwavering support and guidance she consistently provides to both Freedom students and staff.
A special reminder to 8th-grade parents: if you haven't already done so, kindly ensure you have engaged in a conversation with your students regarding the review and signing of the 8th-grade contract.

La semana anterior nuestros estudiantes han participado en diversas actividades durante y después del horario escolar. Después de la escuela, los estudiantes de todo el distrito participaron con entusiasmo en las audiciones para la producción de "La Sirenita" el lunes y el martes después de la escuela, mostrando su talento y dedicación.Freedom organizó dos partidos de voleibol Allstar de las niñas en casa y un juego intramural, contribuyendo a un ambiente escolar vibrante y atractivo.
Nuestros estudiantes se sumergieron en la segunda semana de pruebas ACCESS durante el día. Nuestros alumnos multilingües demostraron un dominio encomiable de la lengua inglesa, destacando diligentemente en las áreas de comprensión auditiva, lectura, expresión oral y expresión escrita.
Mirando hacia el futuro, la próxima semana se designa como la Semana de los Consejeros Escolares, lo que nos permite expresar nuestra gratitud por las valiosas contribuciones de la Sra. Anthony, nuestra estimada consejera FMS. Reconocemos y apreciamos el apoyo inquebrantable y la orientación que constantemente proporciona a los estudiantes y el personal de Freedom.

The Jack Kent Cooke Young Scholars Program
The Jack Kent Cooke Young Scholars Program is a selective five-year, pre-college scholarship open to high-performing 7th grade students with financial need. It provides comprehensive academic and college advising, as well as financial support from 8th grade through high school. There are Cooke-sponsored summer programs, internships, music/art lessons, support for the purchase of electronic hardware and software needs, and other learning enrichment opportunities that are specific to the student.

El Jack Kent Cooke Young Scholars Program es una beca preuniversitaria selectiva de cinco años abierta a estudiantes de 7º curso con alto rendimiento y necesidades económicas. Whats Happening in Science! Qué está pasando en ciencia
This week, 6th graders will begin their thermal energy unit. They will investigate what it means for an object to be hot or cold, and learn how temperature relates to molecular motion.
This week 7th grade will have their assessment on Phase Change. They will be assessed on kinetic energy, molecular attraction, and the properties of the phases. Dry Ice has been moved to this week and will be the precursor to our next engineering internship!
This week 8th graders will learn more about how to identify an organism’s traits. They will then use this knowledge to graph trait distribution in a population of animals.
Whats Happening in SS! Qué está pasando en SS
Sixth graders have finished analyzing the unique geography of China and how it hurt trading but deterred outside invaders. We are now discussing the different dynasties and how their contributions helped influence society.
Seventh grade started the third and final unit for the United States Constitution this week. We are focusing on how power is divided between the three branches of government. Students will learn about the responsibilities of the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial Branches of government. The Legislative Branch was the focus of the first week of the unit.
Whats Happening in Math! Qué está pasando en matemáticas
In the last week 6th grade math has been focused on learning to multiply and divide decimal numbers. This week we will take the Unit 5 Quiz #2. Next step will be using our multiplication and division strategies to solve real world problems.
6th grade Aimes has started their Introducing and Applying Proportional Relationships unit. They will be working on this unit for the next week.
7th grade students are continuing to work with positive and negative numbers. They have utilized strategies with subtraction and addition of integers, and will now move onto multiplying and dividing. At the end of the unit, they will be able to perform all four operations with positive and negative numbers using a variety of strategies
7th grade Aimes has started a new unit on Associations in Data. They will have a test on it next week.
8th grade students are continuing to analyze different representations of functions. Next, they will be learning the differences between linear and nonlinear functions and apply their knowledge to real world situations.
8th grade AIMES finished their unit on their Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities and took a test this past Friday on it. Students begin working on their Exponential Functions unit this week.

This week, 6th grade began exploring different pieces of Argumentative Writing. They have been practicing choosing a claim and writing three pieces of evidence to support their position. Great work, 6th grade!
This week, the 7th graders are wrapping up their informational writing unit and completing an infographic on culture. They will be presenting at the end of the week to a partner!
8th grade are finishing up their Holocaust Research Presentations, and starting book clubs. Students will be reading Holocaust Novels, and discussing with their groups. They also have completed pre-reading activities for our whole class story, The Diary of Anne Frank.
This week, the 6th grade AIMES ELA students are creating posters to demonstrate their knowledge about the Hero’s Journey. They are looking very detailed and artistic so far!
This week, the 7th grade AIMES ELA students started the informational research unit. They are creating their own research question about society and culture, and will find their own sources to answer their question.
This week, the 8th grade AIMES ELA students are in the middle of writing a theme analysis essay about the overall theme in The Outsiders. Their essay will be for a standard grade.

This week in Art:
6th Grade - Welcome to Art activities. Begin working on Elements of Art project which will include Line, Shape, Form, Value, Color, Space, Texture and Text.
7th Grade - Welcome to Art activities. Begin working on Color Wheel project. Student color wheels will include their own design, Primary and Secondary colors, Hue, Shade and Tint.
8th Grade - Welcome to Art activities. Begin working on Triptych project focusing on pencil work and Value.
This week in CHOIR:
Students in the choir are preparing for their March 26th concert. We are currently focusing on learning notes and rhythms to their repertoire for this semester.
This week in MUSIC:
6th grade: Just started the quarter and will be focusing on learning how to read the treble clef note names and understand the concept of accidental. All students need a notebook for this class, due by next week, and their syllabus form.
7th Grade: Just started the quarter and will focus on reviewing how to read the treble clef note names and understand the accidental concept. Spanish 7: Students will learn how to greet people using the appropriate Spanish expression for each of the situations provided.
Spanish 8: Students will learn how to use the correct form of each adjective introduced to describe each person or group of people provided.
World Cultures 6th: Students will be introduced to Canadian geography.
This week in STEAM:
6th: Students are designing their own Ankle Foot Orthosis, individually. Then utilizing a decision matrix, each group will select a winning design. Once that is completed, the groups will begin building their prototypes!
7th: This week, students will begin our Wind Turbine projects. Each student will design their own wind turbine blade, choose the material, and number of blades, then the groups will select a winning design.
8th: This week the students will be analyzing Newton’s Laws, and how they relate to flight. We will test his theories throughout the semester.

Athletic program/ programa atlético
If you child has decided to participate in the Freedom Middle School Athletic program, they will need a signed permission slip, sports physical and a paid $25.00 Athletic fee.

Athletic Eligibility/Elegibilidad Atlética
Parents/Guardians,
Student athletes will be responsible for completing an eligibility form for sports. The procedure for this is below.
Eligibility: Students must remain eligible each week to continue participating. Eligibility is based on behavior and academics. Students will not be allowed to participate in games or practices the following week if ineligible. They may return to play if they meet the eligibility requirements on their next eligibility form.
Forms: Students must complete the eligibility form every Wednesday and return it to the folder by Friday morning. If a student is deemed ineligible based on the form they should continue to support their team but are unable to participate.
ISS/OSS: If a student receives an ISS, they are ineligible for the next game (1 game) but can continue to practice. If a student receives an OSS, they are ineligible for 1 week and are not allowed to participate in games or practices for that week. If a student receives 2 OSS in the course of a sports season, they will be removed from the team.
Padres/Tutores,
Los estudiantes atletas serán responsables de completar un formulario de elegibilidad para los deportes. El procedimiento para esto es abajo.
Requisitos: Los estudiantes deben permanecer elegibles cada semana para continuar participando. La elegibilidad se basa en el comportamiento y los estudios. Los estudiantes no podrán participar en juegos o prácticas la semana siguiente si no son elegibles. Si un estudiante recibe una OSS, estará inelegible por 1 semana y no podrá participar en juegos o prácticas por esa semana. Si un alumno recibe 2 OSS en el transcurso de una temporada deportiva, será expulsado del equipo.
