Get to Know Your Board Members: Our Student Board Members!
Madison Street, Lincoln High School
1. What made you want to become a student board representative?
Becoming the student board member to represent my school has allowed me the opportunity to engage in my community and represent my peers in making educational decisions that will directly impact them. I wanted this role not only to participate in governance processes, but also to advocate for my school and make a difference.
2. What would you like to see accomplished during your time as a student board representative?
During my remaining time as a student board member I would like to see an increase in student participation with their schools and community, and greater student and adult collaboration in order to forge stronger connections that lead to productive change. Our district has already taken a great step towards making this a reality by implementing the new Student Senate.
3. What does life outside of school look like?
Currently my life outside of school is limited to babysitting, homework, and sleeping, due to my commitments within my school such as choir, theatre, NHS, science expo, tutoring, sports, and 5 AP classes. Despite the frequent chaos, I love the challenge and being involved.
4. What are your plans for the future/after graduation?
After graduation I plan to attend an Ivy League or one of the Seven Sister Colleges on the east coast. I am keen on majoring in either political science or physics. I also plan to travel around the eastern hemisphere, most likely through a study abroad. My ultimate goal is to find a career that will be enjoyable and make a difference in the world.
Shelby Crain, Phoenix High School
1. What made you want to become a student board representative?
When I joined the School Board, I was very unsure about wanting to continue, but I ended up falling in love with being an active part of the decision making process. I also enjoyed being able to educate myself on district rules and procedures being followed.
2. What would you like to see accomplished during your time as a student board representative?
I hope to see more focus on the needs of the older schools, as well as more student involvement in the meetings.
3. What does life outside of school look like?
My life outside of school involves a lot of babysitting along with my involvement with the Women’s Club.
4. What are your plans for the future/after graduation?
My plans for after graduation are to become a 911 dispatcher.
Clara Williams, Twelve Bridges High School
1. What made you want to become a student board representative?
I knew I wanted to get more involved within my community and on my school campus, I had often felt that my voice wasn't heard, and I wanted to expand upon opportunities for student voice and representation in Lincoln. I have served 2 consecutive terms as the student board member from Twelve Bridges.
2. What would you like to see accomplished during your time as a student board representative?
As I finish up my 2nd term serving on the board, I'm so incredibly proud of all the things our board and community have accomplished, most notably for me would be my work in organizing the Student Senate, and all the amazing ideas that arose out of it including a youth center in Lincoln. This just solidifies my confidence in student advocacy and the power of having increased student voice in Lincoln. Knowing that the student voice will continue to be a focus of our district after I'm gone reassures my faith in Lincoln values, and speaks to the character of everyone who lives here. I'm so thankful that I grew up in such a tight-knit, caring community.
3. What does life outside of school look like?
Outside of school and the Board I remain fairly busy. I'm interested in medicine and serve as the president of my school's HOSA club, which drove me to begin volunteering at Sutter Roseville in the ER. Working with patients and doctors has been so impactful and really reaffirmed my goals to go into a healthcare field. For fun, I enjoy hiking and being in nature, and seize every opportunity I have to get outside and explore.
4. What are your plans for the future/after graduation?
After college I'm going to North Carolina to pursue a dual degree in Health Sciences and Political Science with a concentration in either history or Spanish, I haven't yet decided. I received a full ride scholarship with paid study abroad at Salem College, and I have reciprocity with 2 other universities next to my college, which gives me plenty of courses to explore and expand upon my interests. I'm super excited to go, and so thankful for all the experience serving on the board has given me.
