The theme of Black History Month 2023 is Black Resistance. The National Museum of African American History & Culture (NMAAHC) has a virtual walkthrough of a collection titled "Making a Way Out of No Way" which shows perfect examples of Black Resistance (and resilience) throughout history in the United States.

People notice when they only hear about certain groups during awareness months, especially children that belong to those groups. It is our job as adults in their lives to share knowledge and role models with our children. While heritage months are incredibly important, it is also important to not only discuss topics during those months. Four ways we can continue to have these conversations throughout the entire year include:

1. Consciously increase representation in your everyday activities.
2. Learn about important historical figures all year round, not just in their corresponding awareness/heritage month.
3. Model awareness and ally-ship
4. Encourage cultural sharing
5. Redirect and correct disrespectful actions

Date of Birth: February 15, 1820

Susan B. Anthony was a well-known public speaker and activist, in a time when women giving speeches in public was considered improper. She is known as a champion of equal rights, fighting to abolish slavery, promoting suffrage for women, and arguing for equal pay for equal work. She was close friends with Frederick Douglass, after meeting when they were both young.

Date of Birth: February 1818 (Celebrated on the 14th)

Frederick Douglass was a former slave who escaped and became a prolific social activist and public speaker for the Abolitionist Movement, which sought to end slavery. He was also a member of the Suffrage Movement, seeking the right to vote both for men of color and women of all races. He was born in February, but his actual date of birth is unknown. His birthday is celebrated on February 14th.

Date of Birth: February 11, 1962

On November 6, 2012, Tammy Baldwin became the first openly gay person to be elected to the United States Senate. She is known for her work to guarantee all Americans health insurance coverage and affordable healthcare. She championed the cause for young Americans to be able to stay on their parent's health insurance plans until they are 26, which significantly improved the coverage rates for young adults.

ASUA is proud to share that Jillian Winn, ASUA Associate Head of School, and Emma Fisher, ASUA Director of Research and Development, attended and had a poster presentation at the Pacific Coast Research Conference in San Diego, CA last week. The title of the poster is Bridging the Research-to-Practice Gap: A Descriptive Case Study and focuses on school-wide positive behavior and intervention supports.

Kay Stauffer, ASUA Chief Operations Officer, has had an article published in NBOA's NET ASSETS magazine! The article, linked above, shares the critical need for compassion in HR and beyond.
