A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear PES families,
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving break. We are so happy to have our students back at school with us.
This month, for social emotional learning, we will be focusing on self management. According to the CASEL standards for social emotional learning, self management is the ability to manage one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations, and to achieve goals and aspirations. This may include managing your stress, being motivated to achieve personal and collective goals, and showing courage to take initiative and risks.
Students will be learning about how to set goals. In classrooms, we will be reading A Little Spot of Optimism. In guidance classes, students will be working on creating a goal and displaying it in a way that can be shared with others. The most important way to meet our goals is to develop a system or process for how to achieve them. For example, if a goal is to become a better reader, students might create a system, or plan, to finish one book each week.
If you would like to learn more about about SEL learning and the CASEL framework, here is a link to a short video: SEL 101: What are the core competencies and key settings?
Next week, we will have our first school spirit week. Members of the fifth grade leadership team were able to put together this fun event for students. We hope you will join us in some school spirit fun!
As always, we are here to help. If you have any questions or need support, please reach out.
Best regards,
Nina Willette
