Happy November! I came across this the other day from Naval Ravikant; “Doctors won’t make you healthy. Nutritionists won’t make you slim. Teachers won’t make you smart. Gurus won’t make you calm. Mentors won’t make you rich. Trainers won’t make you fit. Ultimately, you have to take responsibility. Save yourself.”
A goal of ours at the ALC is make sure students know that they ultimately are responsible for their own actions and attitudes. Developing this awareness allows us to think before making decisions as well as reflect on past choices and experiences. This is referred to as personal agency: “the sense that I am the one who is causing or generating an action”. It is this agency that will guide us later in life. Aristotle is often misquoted as saying “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”
Will Durant actually said this but the sentiment still rings true. The challenge then is CHOOSING excellence more often than not. Choose kindness. Choose optimism. Choose to help others. Choose compassion. Choose virtue. Over time you’ll find that these great actions will simply occur out of habit.
The universe wants your best. It needs your best. A good life is yours and your responsibility alone. Choose wisely.
