Dear PYLUSD Community,
At the heart of our academic endeavors lies our continued commitment to Putting Kids First in the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD). This year in support of this promise, we launched a robust elementary afterschool math tutoring program.
Over 4,000 PYLUSD students were invited to participate in this program under the guidance of 125 dedicated elementary teacher facilitators. The program included five four-week intervention cycles, leveraging programs like Reflex Math to hone students’ math skills. During tutoring sessions, students engaged in focused work on foundational math skills while receiving personalized attention to practice, tailored to meet their individual needs.
Pre- and post-tests administered throughout each tutoring cycle showcased significant growth and learning among our students. The Reflex Math program, coupled with small-group instruction, provided an environment conducive to academic progress and confidence building.
The positive feedback from both students and teachers underscores the program’s importance and effectiveness. Our teachers expressed gratitude for the opportunity to provide targeted support, noting the impact on student engagement and comprehension. Witnessing students' growth firsthand has been a source of immense pride and satisfaction for our educators.
As we reflect on the success of this year's program, we are already looking ahead to the future. The data from our state assessments underscored the need for continued math intervention and support. As such, and looking ahead to the 2024-2025 school year, we are excited to build upon this foundation of success. In addition to continuing our targeted math intervention, we are eager to expand the program to include small-group reading instruction. By addressing the diverse needs of our students, we are committed to fostering a culture of academic excellence and empowerment throughout the PYLUSD community.
In closing, I extend my appreciation to our dedicated teachers, supportive staff, and, most importantly, our resilient students. Our afterschool math tutoring program demonstrates just one of the ways we are working to unlock every student’s full potential here in PYLUSD.
