Hello Whitman! Thank you again for supporting our SAVE Promise Club Leaders as they held Safe Schools Week! Last week our Whitman school community truly demonstrated how we work together to educate and empower all to make school safety a priority! We can continue to uplift positivity, inclusivity and kindness!

Parents/Guardians, Students, and Staff,

Our Nursing Department in collaboration with the Wauwatosa Health Department would like to bring awareness regarding a rise in whooping cough (pertussis) cases in our area. Pertussis is a very contagious disease that starts like a cold and can lead to a serious cough. Even vaccinated children and adults can get pertussis because immunity fades over time. Please see the attached letter from the Wauwatosa Health Department for additional information.

Here’s what you can do to help our school community:

• Read the attached letter from the Wauwatosa Health Department
• If your child has cold symptoms with a cough, ask their medical provider if they need to be tested.
• Check with your student's doctor about their pertussis vaccination.
• Consider receiving a flu shot for your child(ren). Free flu shots for kids will be available on 11/14/24 from 3:00-6:00 p.m. at Wauwatosa City Hall.
• Learn when to keep your child home from school by reviewing our district illness guidelines.

Thank you for helping us keep everyone safe and healthy.

Starting in November, we will be making a few changes to the way in which we address student tardies while also continuing to support the student and build the necessary skills to help them get to class on time every day. Please note that for the purposes of these interventions we will not be looking at or discussing tardies to 1st hour as we understand that these are often not within the control of the student. Instead we are only monitoring student tardies to 2nd through 7th hour.

Please review the following outline of interventions...

4 Tardies in a Month: Notice of Excessive Tardies Letter will be sent home via email & the student will meet with Mr. Cantwell to discuss their tardies and any supports they might need in order to prevent continued tardies.

8 Tardies in a Month: 2nd Notice of Excessive Tardies Letter will be sent home via email & the student will attend a meeting (led by the Dean of Students) during lunch/recess to discuss and develop skills/mindsets that will help them get to class on time every day.

12 Tardies in a Month: Student will be referred to our Student Success Team to review their academics, behavior and attendance in order to purposefully develop an individualized support plan for them. The Dean of Students will call home to review these plans with parents/guardians. Additionally, the student will be prohibited from attending or participating in any extracurriculars for the remainder of the month.

16 Tardies in a Month: An IN PERSON MEETING will be held with the student, a parent/guardian, their counselor and the Dean of Students to discuss the continued tardiness.

24 Tardies in a Month: An IN PERSON MEETING will be held with the student, a parent/guardian, their counselor and the Principal/Associate Principal to discuss the continued tardiness.

Despite what students might say, headphones/earbuds are not an appropriate fashion accessory in a school or professional setting. As such, students will be instructed to put them away while in class and they should remain away unless students have been given the instruction to use them for essential and educational purposes. Refusal to follow this expectation will result in a referral for a Technology Violation and consequences will be be determined in accordance with our district's Disciplinary Framework.

Guardians are now required to use the Infinite Campus Parent Portal to report student absences, late arrivals or early departures. For the safety and security of all students, excused absences are to be reported through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. For instructions on how to access absence reporting inside of the Infinite Campus Parent Portal, please see the Announcements section when logging into the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. If you need help navigating the new software or have another question or concern regarding attendance, please call 414-773-2602, voicemail is available 24 hrs.

Remember, students are allotted 10 parent excused absences per school year excluding medical appointments. If your child is absent for any period of the day due to a doctor/dentist appointment, please provide a medical excuse with dates and appointment times.
